2016 Nissan Titan XD Wins Cars.com's Best Pickup Truck Award

2016_nissan_TITAN_xd_18 II

In a tight competition between six of the newest pickup trucks sold in the U.S., the all-new 2016 Nissan Titan XD won one of the most coveted awards in the pickup truck segment: Cars.com's Best Pickup Truck of 2016.

The Titan XD separated itself from the competition with a strong showing in the three key categories in which new or significantly revised models were judged: power, capability and value. The other nominees in this year's competition were the Chevrolet Colorado diesel, the GMC Sierra 1500, the Ram 1500 Rebel, the Ram 3500 Heavy Duty and Toyota Tacoma. All were model-year 2016 pickups.

The winning Titan XD impressed our judges with its powerful Cummins V-8, sturdy ladder-frame construction and quality interior. As a completely new model that attempts to deliver more torque and comfort to truck-loving customers, this is an impressive execution. Congratulations to the 2016 Nissan Titan XD for resetting the bar in the full-size pickup truck segment.

Did cars.com actually test this pickup?

Paper test winner!!

I have to admit, I really see this taking market share away from number 1 Ford and number 2 and 3 Chevy, Ram

@Kurt,

No, but TFL Truck did.

Am I surprised? No. Frequently, a new model will walk off
with the Blue Ribbon. So, let the rock throwing begin.
The new Chevy Colorado with the baby Duramax will also sell
very well. As long as people keep their limitations in mind,
the blurring of the lines won't be so bad. Although the XD
seems to be forced to split hairs in a lot of posts on this site,
it should hold its own when compared more with a 1/2 ton
then with a 3/4 ton.

I also commend Nissan for biasing the Pro4X with an
extensive off road upgrade in hardware. And don't be
surprised to see in a few years, those Cummins numbers go
up. The 310hp/555 ft lbs is just a starting point. One need
witness the diesels from the Big 3 in the past 5 years all
slowly inch up. The Nissan Cummins with join them.

TFL is manily for entertainment. If anyone take them seriously, they are as .... as TFL is.

I think Nissan should've just gone all out and went for it into the 3/4-1ton market instead of this 1 foot in thing.

I want to see how A.R.E. is going to mount a cap on this
truck, especially with the Utili-track option installed. There is
no place to mount J hooks. Unless they design the J hooks to
slide into those channels, I can't see it happening. Unless
I'm missing something...

Best-Selling Pickup Trucks: December 2015
Posted by Mark Williams | January 5, 2016

It's official: GM takes the throne as the No. 1 pickup maker in the U.S. for 2015 by a wide margin.

Nitro, I think you got your numbers mixed up. Stop spreading false information. Now go ahead and correct that.

What were the test criteria?

GM can be the #1 pickup truck maker in the world for all I care, BUT they don't sell the most like the leader FORD!

But what does this have to with the XD. Oh wait, the trvlls are talking.

@GMSRGREAT, Sorry I was going by PUTC's picture of where they have the order of sales for trucks listed as Ford1, Chevy 2, Ram 3, GMC 4.....that was for Decemeber, but all the sites have said Ford is still number 1, but you are allowed to argue that out of 40 years GM might have won once, something to be proud of...

Ford's December sales of 239,242 were up 8% from a year ago with F-Series trucks up 15%. The 85,211 pickup sales added last month were enough to cement the truck's 39th year as the best-selling pickup and 34 years as best-selling vehicle.-FREEPRESS

You all have to remember gmsnotsogreat is a greedy one. He does what no one else does and combines all the gm garbage together. That been an argument for sometime with him but you can only show an ignorant person just so much and then they clam up and the only ones to get them straight is there mommy and daddy. Such a sad and ignorant case he is.

So pickuptrucks.com gave the Nissan Titan XD the best pickup truck award.

Why is the F-150 leading the sales when it didn't win any awards?
I say its a media failure!
The vehicle media such as magazines and online reviews are a failure.
It could be Ford is having success with direct mail advertising or bypassing the vehicle press media by running ads on TV or maybe Ford has a better salesroom experience with their customers, but you have to get the customers to visit the dealer salesroom before you can impress them.
I don't know the exact answer, just guessing but I always believed if the media pushed and praised a certain model of a new vehicle then it should be the leader in sales.
Maybe, just maybe it could be an opposite effect where more and more people are losing their faith in the media and the public is more attracted to the truck they don't like.
They think the vehicle manufacture pays them off to give good reviews,,, is that it?

@Lou_DC,

Guess you missed the fact the F150 racked up 2015 awards, it's not eligible until a redone is made for the next awards.

Congrats Nissan on a deserving win. That is one fine truck.

I really thought the diesel Colorado had a good chance at this.

But I'm just as happy to see another worthy contender be handed this award.

The Titan XD will steal some of the lighter HD sales from the Big 3, with Ford taking the biggest hit.

Good work Nissan.

nitro - people get confused by corporate sales, division sales, and brand sales.
GM is the umbrella corporation.
It has Chevrolet Division and GMC Division both selling pickups.
Under GMC division we have Sierra and Canyon truck brands.
Under Chevrolet Division we have Silverado and Colorado truck brands.

Ford is both a brand and a corporate division. The proper corporate name is Ford Motor Company. Under that umbrella they currently have Lincoln and Ford. F Series is a brand of pickups.

GM corporation currently sells more pickups under 4 brands. Since they sell under 4 brands they cannot claim #1 selling brand.
Ford Motor Company has one division i.e. Ford selling F Series brand. Since all of their trucks are under the same division and brand can claim #1 selling brand.

Why is the F-150 leading the sales when it didn't win any awards?

Posted by: Lou_DC | Jan 13, 2016 3:12:15 PM

Lou, the F-150 isn't leading sales, GM is # 1 truck manufacturer in the US and they don't make the F-150. Geezz, why do people visit this website if you don't believe what they are telling you.

GMSRGREAT - please re-read my post until your brain comprehends the difference between brand and corporation.

F Series is #1 selling B_R_A_N_D

GM CORPORATION between 4 BRANDS sells more pickups

Pick which ever one floats your boat BUT

Ford F Series B_R_A_N_D

OUTSELLS

GMC Sierra brand

GMC Canyon brand

Chevrolet Silverado Brand

Chevrolet Colorado Brand

GM as a corporation sells more grand total but that did not stop them from going bankrupt.

All well and good, if you want a 1/2 pu, that weighs as much as a HD, but will haul just a bit more than some 1/2 ton trucks, and much less than other 1/2t trucks. Then get worst mileage than most gas trucks, and not tow much more than some! Then you talk about price!!! You might as well buy a real HD Ford, Chevy, GMC or Ram! diesel or gas does not matter! get the real deal, and spend, in some cases less! Just look at the latest Motor Trend/ Truck Trend test for TOTY, and see just how the Nissan did compared to the new Chevy/GMC 1/2t 6.2/ 8spd! there you will see exactly what I am saying!

Too funny! The XD is turning out to be the largest disappointment in a while but Cars.com picks it as the best pickup!? The lights are on but no one is home...

Chevy or GMC profits all go to the same place and if you buy a GMC your supporting Chevy and Chevy supports GMC. Ford tried to sell trucks though Lincoln and failed. both sell a ton of trucks and the numbers can be spun to say almost anything that's marketing.

On to the Titan im not sure if it will sell well or not some people will buy it just cuz its new. i think its ugly but i have yet to see one in person.

When it comes down to it this truck is going to be good. Everyone knows it but they don't want to admit it. Honestly, who cares if Cars.com gave it this award? Move on and support the truck you prefer. they will sell and I'm willing to bet it will sell way better than the 1st gen titan. I'm guessing somewhere near the Toyota tundra range. Maybe a little less. We will see. Anyways.. this truck will do just fine.

So the results were based on power, capability and value.

Although the XD's power is adequate, everything is else is below expectations. The XD underwhelms with half ton-like capability, worse than three quarter ton fuel economy, and so far Nissan appears to be having trouble moving them off the lots. Sounds like we have a new Cars.com wiener.

Dont you just love the dumb acidness of these 2 gm clowns?? Not really but seems to be no cure for it. Guess thats why johnny blow rides the little short yellow STOOL bus. We all know where he's headed and taking all the gm boys with him. They all going to the pump station cause they are full of it.

LOL truck kid still can't spell school bus. HAHAHA!

The Ford fan boys are really slamming this new truck. Me thinks thou dost protest too much! Ford fan boys would love this truck if it had a blue oval. This truck might not upset the Detroit 2 and FCA but it will take some sales away from them. There is more to a truck than aluminum. Competition is good for the consumer, but maybe not for fan boys.

@johnny Blow, like I've said before I didn't misspell that word. I even did it in capital letters. It says STOOL and you don't sit on it. Maybe you are just one big example of STOOL. I think so.

Hard to believe this beat out the colorado/canyon diesel.

@trucker, you say the FORD boys started this but if you read back through these comments it was gmsnotsogreat that got the ball rolling and we all know who he is now don't we.

Just think for similar money, you can have a Mega Cab 3500 Laramie with 385 horses and 900 lb-ft, with over 4,000 lb payload! If you have a 12,000 lb gooseneck or 5th wheel, it's going to put up to 3,000 lb. of payload on the rear axle. Cargo, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers... It's not too difficult to get close to that GVWR.

It is kind of dumb how they only test the new or redesigned models for these awards. Why should something get rewarded "BEST" car or truck unless it is truly the BEST when compared to all others? They should include the winner from the previous year in doing these tests. Although for the first year they need to test ALL of them together.

It's official: GM takes the throne as the No. 1 pickup maker in the U.S. for 2015 by a wide margin.

I didn't write the above statement, PUTC did.
Ford sells, F-150, 250, 350, 450, 550, 650, 750 maybe more different models all grouped under F-series. Guess, what GM out sold them. Period!

GMSRGREAT - Both Ford and Ram make trucks larger than 3500. Both Ford and Ram count 4500 in pickup class. Anything larger is counted separately.

Your cut and paste is correct that GM is the number 1 pickup maker.

Ford F Series just happens to be number one selling brand.

Which one is legally reported and stands legally in advertising?

Go to PUTC monthly sales charts....... which brand is listed in 1st?

The purpose of the titan xd was to have halfton capacities with 3/4ton capabilities. I would wager that the the titan xd would tow at the limit with confidence vs white knuckling on the other halftons.

And no, the f150 HD is over-rated for what it can do regardless of it's rated capacities.

hahahahaha GM this, GM that, GTFO trvlls.

A 12,000 lb bumper pull trailer has 1800 lbs tongue weight. I think you're going to be pushing the limits of the XD. The Diesel engine will be fine, but the truck will be squatting.

The XD will be a popular choice during the next year, both the gas and diesel versions.

Alex - The XD cargo ratings are more tolerable when one looks at "bumper tow" as long as one loads to 10% tongue weight. Even at 10% that is 1200 lbs on the truck. The equalizer hitch might knock 100 lbs off of that number. That still sucks for a crewcab pickup. The XD has a cargo rating of 1500 - 2000 lbs. That leaves 300 - 700 lbs.
That isn't much in reserve for a crewcab truck that is usually a family vehicle.
TFL ran the truck with a tail heavy gooseneck and could legally carry 1 passenger besides the driver.

@Truck Crazy--Yes gmsgreat has contributed more than his fair share to the fan boy chatter but the Ford fan boys out number the GM and Ram combined. At one time the Ram fan boys were the majority but there is only so far you can go with goats. I am not a fan boy myself and believe that a competitive market is good for everyone. The Titan XD might not break into the top 3 sales but it is good to see Nissan come out with a new truck after a long dry spell. If the Titan XD happens to look like the prior generation of F-150s then this should be construed as a compliment since imitation is the highest form of a compliment.

After a little thought, I do see why this vehicle has taken this coveted award.

The Titan XD offers a decent vehicle for the horse float set.

Why would you buy a light SuperDuty to tow a 8 000lb horse float? This will be a far better option, it offer superior comfort and ride, more economical fuel usage, even better than the 2.7 EcoThirst.

Will out tow any 1/2 ton.

Good work Nissan for coming up with a more traditional vehicle that is attractive and superior to any 1/2 ton offering from Ford or even the other two and Toyota.

I'll be interested in seeing how the new V8 gas Titan XD rolls as well.

I would strongly consider rechecking the Fanbots data. The Ford guys are no where near as ignorant as the anti Fordbots and do not TRO!!!! nearly as much. Just look at the pure ignorance that keeps coming from GMSARNOTSOGREAT, Johnny welfare doe, Hemi V8 aka Rolling Can of Beer. Seriously look at the past few articles that were just pasted with youtube links.

Damn. That thing is as ugly as the new F150.
