Coming Monday: Texas Truck Showdown 2016: Maximum MPG

MAX MPG Group 3 II

We split our Texas Truck Showdown 2016 half-ton pickup truck comparison test into two separate contests: maximum towing and maximum mpg. Pickups in each of these head-to-head tests had to meet a set of unique parameters to compete.

The max-tow players had to be half-ton 4x2 crew-cab short beds costing close to $52,000. We were a little more relaxed with the max mpg contest, allowing the manufacturers to send their best fuel-efficient representative with four doors; there were no price restrictions. We had five competitors for our max-tow contest and four for our max-mpg test.

Knowing that relatively few truck buyers make their decision based solely on fuel economy or mileage-stretching technology, we put all our pickup combatants through the normal PickupTrucks.com battery of tests as well as expert assessments; several data-driven categories were designed specifically to provide important information for potential buyers.

Our Texas Truck Showdown 2016: Maximum MPG results will go live Monday morning, and we think you'll find the numbers and our results pretty interesting. Check back then to find out which pickup won this contest and share your comments.

Our four competitors were the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (5.3-liter V-8; eight-speed automatic transmission), the 2015 Ford F-150 (2.7-liter EcoBoost; six-speed automatic), the 2016 Ram 1500 (3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel; eight-speed automatic) and the 2016 Toyota Tundra (4.6-liter V-8; six-speed automatic).

My guess is that they will finish in the same order as the picture above, from right to left.

Yep. That's what I think ...

Agreed, the Ecofiat will be the mpg victor. Both the 2.7 Ford and 5.3L GM will be close together.

LMAO aka allwunnn,
Can't help yourself with your positive negatives when discussing pickups!

Initial good comments on the GM twins, then straight into the subliminal negatives.

How much do you get paid?

Big Al and I have nutted you out.

Ford PAYS you!

Hey Fat Bitc From Oz, don't you have an airplane to wash and wax. Bye bye now!

"My guess is that they will finish in the same order as the picture above, from right to left."

My thoughts exactly for MPG. For the towing test, I predict that it's either going to be the F-150 or Chevrolet 1500 coming first.

Ram still leading the off road segment.

Yup, I do believe this article is click bait.

Why not just present the article Mark Williams?

If you want to publish articles of this type, then become involved, using your name, ie, "Mark Williams".

All you have done is brought out the fncking morons.

As usual Ford won't win. Ford is only #1 in its marketing.

Raptor couldn't do it, Titan couldn't do it. Ram Power Wagon dominates snowy gold mine hill.

Not interested in the Fiat thing. Very intersted to see how the quality trucks finish.

Big Al from Oz

I think your computer is on full auto. Switch it to semi auto.

Ram, GM, Ford, Toyota will the be the finishing order.

We can all guess at who we think should finish first but we all know who will finish last.

Anyone else notice that this site as made a whole article on the new Ford rapter and how's its doing some races. Yet doesn't do an update on how it didn't finish the first race due to electrical issues... But does hesitate to crap on other makes and models....

no it's different Csnow, FIAT owns dodge/chrysler/ram. It is FIAT.
FIAT

FIAT= Fix It Again TONY

FCA=Fixing Crappy Vehicles

Ford is running a Fiesta engine in a pick up, Dog Lamb is running a Fiat motor in their Lame Mobile, and Toyota's 10mpg duck is hoping its 39 gallon gas tank will out run Chevy's 26 gallon tank. Congratulations on another win Chevrolet, you must be getting tired of smoking these turds and their Walmart employee drivers.

As we see, the Tundra is not crap, it is CRAPPY:

As we can see, the Tundra is a great vehicle, if you only keep it for 60 days, this one is 61 days old:

Ford says the reason the eco-boost suffers from bad gas mileage is because they made the truck too quiet where the driver can't hear the quick acceleration of the engine so the driver keeps pressing the accelerator down so he can hear the roar of the engine. Flooring it to hear the engine harms gas mileage.
That's the reason they piped fake engine sound into the speakers.
Everybody agrees the 5.7 Hemi makes the strongest engine sound - the sound of power and performance - almost sounding like a race car and the driver likes that.

Not only do you feel that engine power, you have to hear it too!

@LouDC that was deep, man.

It looks many in here like to call RAM a FIAT.
Isn't that embarrassing for NA automanufacturers , that FIAT makes best offroad truck POWER WAGON and, best MPG truck with Ecodiesel and best towing 1 ton truck FIAT 3500 ?
Why NA doesn’t make any better truck in this class, but FIAT is the leader ?
What happened to NA truck builders to slip this much behind, that FIAT makes best trucks ? Why NA engineers doesn't make better truck than FIAT engineers ?
Is it, because NA engineers are not as smart as FIAT engineers ? NA engineers doesn't know to make multilink rear coil suspension usable on the truck. Only FIAT engineer does, even with air ride, no one else has. HEMI is another FIAT engineers achievement. 8 speed trany is a dream for other engineers , but FIAT.
FIAT engineers are laughing at NA engineers, still using century old leaf springs.

Isn't that embarrassing for NA automanufacturers , that FIAT makes best offroad truck POWER WAGON-------The Raptor is not being produced yet so they are the only ones out there. Isn't it nice fiat copied Ford on this concept.

and, best MPG truck with Ecodiesel----That is true but slowest performing truck too. Better do something good.

and best towing 1 ton truck FIAT 3500 ?----Yes let's take the shortest wheel base truck and give it a 10lb higher tow rating than a 4 door long bed Ford truck that is also a 4x4 and not a 4x2 like the fiat. Yea, real impressive??.

. Only FIAT engineer does, even with air ride, no one else has.-----that is nice

HEMI is another FIAT engineers achievement. Hahahahahaha, you fool, you can thank Daimler for that.

8 speed trany is a dream for other engineers ,---------Again, what a fool. They buy that transmission along with the Aisin and their front drive 9 speed.

So close to looking kinda smart but still so far away.

@LMAO
Nice try, but you are wrong .It's FIAT and POWER WAGON didn't copy raptor.

Since gas is down below $2 /gal the bragging about MPG has disappeared.
How is that pickup starting when its -15 below outside?
Does that full electric pwr steering moan and get stiff on that newer F-150 ?
Do the brakes get stiff and don't stop when it gets that cold?

never-never did drive ANY Ford pickup with good brakes
Chevy - GMC trucks have the BEST brakes
I always loved the look of those chrome mag wheels on the Ram 1500 but as I got a closer look they are just cheap plastic chrome looking hub caps! The Ram just drips of cheapness.

@LMAO
Nice try, but you are wrong .It's FIAT and POWER WAGON didn't copy raptor.

Your right, it would have been better then.

Not only do you feel that engine power, you have to hear it too!

That's why you need a GM with a 6.two.

As for leaf springs, some times you get it right the first time. People have also been using round wheels for millennia, along with umbrellas, pipe and cannabis. BTW, seems no other manufacturer is interested in acquiring or merging with Fiat. I don't expect them or their brands to be around in 10 years.

@Tom, re: Fiat-- disagree with you about the notion that Jeep or RAM won't be long for this world.

Jeep is an iconic brand, and Jeep customers have continually forgiven the various owners of that label; they got away with mostly awful product choices over the years. Until the last 10 years anyway.

Give Chrysler credit for making some of the best Jeep-branded products available during the Daimler years and since that time. Their customer loyalty is off the charts.

I feel bad for all the poor people that got suckered into buying Ram trucks. When Fiat leaves Chrysler those guys will be left high and dry again like the SAAB owners. Anyone ever price out parts to fix the Daimler generation Chrysler vehicles.

@ Dan why come on here and bash Ram trucks, if you don't like it don't buy it. I have a feeling your just jealous and envious of Ram owners. My Ram has pro formed flaw loudly and it's still as solid and tight as the day I bought it.

Ram can't keep up with demand so Chrysler is dumping thier small cars Dart/200 to make room to build more trucks and jeeps.

Happy Valintines Day to all. I love everyone of you like my brother and sister.

It's wrong and it will never be right.

It's wrong and it will never be right.

Happy Valentine's everyone

where is the chevy with the 4.3

Cash gas price in Houston Today is $1.299. So doesn't make sense to spend more for stellar fuel economy. Turbos and 2300 psig fuel pumps are big bucks to replace and may not make it to 300K miles and 20 years. Even our relatively simple '99 GMC 5.3 is straining to make it.

Early prediction on the results tomorrow. Silverado 8 speed trans beats the Ford 2.7 ecobust in FE for most tests. 5.3 engine in V4 mode is approx. 2.65 displacement, less than the Ford. Given the Chevy is probably running higher compression than the ecobust, I believe driving the trucks empty will result with the Chevy getting better FE.

Actually when the 2.7 is running full boost it may be twice the compression ratio, or more.

Tom, actually compression ratios remain the same even under full boost. The advantage is under full boost you are forcing more air and fuel within that space. But I think I see what you are thinking about though.
