GM's Colorado/Canyon Plant Looks to Increase Capacity

Colorado V-6 11 II

In an effort to meet increased demand for Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickup trucks, GM is making plans to improve its Wentzville, Mo., plant by making it more efficient and possibly shifting some full-size van production to another facility. The plant currently produces both midsize pickups along with the Chevy Express and GMC Savana full-size cargo vans.

Combined sales of the two GM midsize pickups totaled almost 115,000 units in 2015, far surpassing most predictions for their first full year of sales. Although November and December 2015 were strong months for Chevy and GMC, sales for both took a hit in January to start 2016.

According to Automotive News, demand for the two new midsize pickups has pushed GM to find ways to squeeze out every ounce of production line speed possible in Missouri. The production plant is already running three full shifts with occasional overtime on the weekends to keep the pipeline full of midsize pickups.

One solution involves moving some production of GM's vans from Wentzville to contract manufacturer AM General's Indiana plant.

I am seeing more and more of these trucks around. All the auto makers had to do was offer a modern small truck and the market would improve. The market was dying due to crappy old products as opposed to no one wanting those trucks.
Kudos to GM for taking the big step.
Ford will follow suite soon enough with the Ranger and Bronco.

I'm guessing these are mostly being sold in more urban areas. Where I live in rural Idaho where every other vehicle is a pickup I have only seen one. And that was probably 5 months ago.

It would be nice to get more midsize GM twins rolling out the door to really give the half a%^ warm over Toyota Taco a real scare.

Maybe that is why ford didn't think the midsize market had a future. They target people in the heart of truck land. Places where trucks are everywhere. And in those places the midsize market IS all but dead.

These gm mids actually looks real nice in person, better than the tacoma. Other than that, not much to like about them.

I see allot of them in chicagoland

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Is this really coming from the same guy that claims to own and still use a Ford Ranger on his farm? You mean to tell me the Thousands of old Ford Ranger owner don't want something new and improved? I bet your statement will change when the Ranger is 100% green lighted. I'm no small truck guy, but I can see it's uses are better fitted as a truck then what Ford told old Ranger owners to buy cars/f150/CUVs/SUVs.

@Beebe - I'm with you on that fact. The one's I see are definitely suburban/urban SUV alternatives. I see younger buyers or older buyers in them. Work trucks in my region of BC are mostly 3/4 or 1 ton trucks.

Rolling Can of Beer - and you actually think that all of the other car companies care about its consumers beyond selling them a minimally legal product that makes them a dollar?

"BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THEY CARE ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE!"

That is a universal truth of all capitalistic corporations.

Your posts are characterized by significantly impaired intellectual and adaptive functioning.

the colorado is going to see much improved fleet sales, this is why demand will be up. if any of you guys have an advanced auto parts in your area look at the new colorado parked outside. my local gas and electric company are starting to replace there first gen colorado's with these new ones also.

This surely speaks volumes based on the luke-warm reception of the 2005 Models, it's good to see that GM has taken measures on repeating those shortcomings for the Current Generation trucks, looks like GM plans to keep the momentum going for a long time based on customer demand!

Most of the ones I see are fleet trucks.

Lots of them running around the Pacific NW both fleet and private . I know if they built a van body on this frame with that new diesel they would really have something. I still see tons of Astro vans running around for plumbers, Locksmith, etc that would love a mid size diesel van.

I see plenty of midsize pickups in rural areas of OH and KY. Most of the new Colorado/Canyons I have seen in the Greater Cincinnati and N KY have been loaded crew cabs and a few fleet extended cabs. These twins are selling well enough. Ford will do well selling the new Rangers and Broncos when they come out. I realize some of you hate smaller trucks but you don't have to buy one. It is good to have more choice.

PETER-
You definately have a point there. GM should absolutely put a van frame on the twins and call it Astro or Safari.

My family had a Ford Aerostar van and it was awesome.

Many people would love for the Astro to come back. A minivan that can tow is really needed.

There is ONE thing, one PACKAGE that none of these mid-size trucks have presently that I would love to see: A Heavier duty payload package or increased GVW package or along those lines. Something for the guy who runs off the beaten path who wants a small truck to actually haul a camper legally, to tow with a safer, heavier, suspension. To actually be able to tow weight AND carry stuff. For the guy who wants a truck for work that can actually haul some weight? If we could see 2000 plus pounds of legal payload - say in the 2100-2500 pound range in a mid size truck you'd have a sweet package. Sure, the truck will probably weigh more and fuel economy will suffer slightly, but

This discussion by GM in moving the van production out of Wentzville has been around of some months now.

This is a good indicator that if Colorado/Canyon production increases prices will drop.

GM will have to move quick, Nissan will come out with the new Frontier as well as the Ford coming out with a Ranger in a couple of years.

Like all Toyota products it doesn't take long for competitors to produce a better product, so to speak.

Toyota is now on a long and slow decline. It started here over a year ago with the Hilux. It has been losing it's shine with the added competition of these new generation midsizers.

I think the company to look out for is Nissan with the Titan range and the next Frontier. Nissan over the next several years or so will have an impact that will affect all pickup manufacturers.

GM is still on a rise with Toyota and Frod slowly declining. I think Ram will drop slightly and FCA knowing that Ram is it's bread winner keeping FCA afloat with Jeep will put in a credible effort in resolving many "Ram shortcomings".

Sorry to sound like a broken record--there is very little reward for the auto-makers to introduce new clean-sheet designs in an economy as dismal as we have in North America today.

Huge irony alert!!!

The US economy is so flabby and tired that a major reduction in the price of fuel had almost NO impact on the metrics that even the government uses to make its measurements.

Second, the scene in Canada that was SO dependent upon healthy energy prices is collapsing after two years of weak energy prices and huge (now irrelevant) investments in energy production infrastructure.

The Keystone Pipeline that everybody was so hyped about during the last five years is stalled. China is Canada's sole trading partner for the expensive tar sands crude. Without a big shakeup politically, the US and Canada can expect more of the same crap economically.

Did anyone really expect anything different?

papajim,
I do prefer you DenverMike persona.

Sales are trending down for the GM midsize trucks so GM is going to up production.

Sorry but GM is selling exactly what was predicted and no more.

I rarely ever see a GM midsize where I live since they started selling them. Consumer Reports has just tagged them as unreliable as well.

It seems there are more new GM mid-sizers than new F-150s in central PA.

Some one mentioned a heavy duty to haul 2,000+ lbs, Most 3/4 tons don't do that. We pulled a 24ft camping trailer up into the Rocky mountains going elk hunting with no problems, from 700 feet above sea level to over Cimaron Pass at 10,000 ft above sea level...

"Without a big shakeup politically, the US and Canada can expect more of the same crap economically.'

@PapaJim - you actually think politicians have that much control to begin with?

Oh and in Canada we had multiple sequential terms in office of conservative politicians.......... it must be all their fault?

At least in USA conservatives can blame Obama.

@johnny dope boy.
There is nothing made today even remotely comparable to the ranger I have. It is a compact truck, not a midsize truck. The difference is price. You can easily pay 45,000 for a midsize truck today and the new ranger will be much more expensive than the old ranger ever was. Mine is a regular cab standard transmission. It gets 27 to 28 mpg on average. I bought it for a whopping $4200 in like-new condition with 100k miles. And yeah, the midsize market where I live is all but dead. I have seen a few new tacomas, but not as farm vehicles. And my brother still owns a previous generation colorado for his farm, but there's no way he's going to replace it with a new colorado for what they cost now.

@Lou BC I think you could be confused about my viewpoint. I happen to be a politically conservative guy but my perspective is focused on what's real.

The reality is that whether these guys are appointed to their jobs or if they're elected, they take an oath.

It's something that I think they forget pretty quickly, whether they are on the left or right. They start believing their own press releases, or something.

Pretty quickly they start feeling that they are entitled to lead. It all unravels there.

Do politicians have control? Not usually, but the guys that got them appointed (or elected) do.

Ask the chairman of Goldman Sachs why his company has underwritten so many of the campaigns of committee leaders and ranking members of the US House and Senate.

Or ask him why it's legal for his company to make unlimited contributions to the political action committees of ranking officials.

You can be sure they take his phone calls, rain or shine. Is that the same as "control?"

You'd have to tell me.

POS GM "mid-sized" trucks (AKA Trucks nearly as big as full sized trucks by with considerable less capability) are getting bitchslapped by the Tacoma in sales.

I agree with jim on politics but he talks nonsense a lot of times when it comes to trucks.

He dislikes the F-Series because he is a GM guy and got taken by a service department on his Ranger so he doesn't like it when another brand comes out with something new.

He hates the new Nissan Frontier that is coming because the Colorado "was first" and he wants the Colorado to have no new compeition.

But then when discussing the Taco he says he likes the Frontier. He says this because he wants to hurt Taco sales so GM can take over.

He loves the Nissan Titan XD because he wants it to hurt F-Series sales. He claims to likes the "grunt"ing noise the XD makes or something and has some kind of itch for it. This is all fake praise as he has no intention of buying one. Says we shouldn't comment on its flaws unless we personally drive one. How many of the other trucks has he personally driven but commented on? None.

When the F-150 plow package debuted he got really "jelly" and told Jeff S that that we need to plow snow. Just let it melt. Lou got a good laugh about that.

This Florida boy knows his politics but his views on trucks is one of the most flawed on this site! He tries to act like he has a lot of knowledge but his best truck he ever had is a 2013 RC base model stripper truck. His other trucks were old Rangers. Not a lot of truck experience there.

@simon are you a Ford fan?

@Simon, you make up the story as you go along, which does not speak very well for you. I have never owned a 2013 pickup of any brand.

BTW: I started driving on the job when I was 17. You talk like a kid. I am being charitable, but I'm through with you.

I rolled over a half million accident free truck miles before I was forty years old. You don't know s**t

Do you all think the GMC Canyon is worth paying the $2000 premium over the Chevy colorado? I mea it's like paying $2k for nicer trim right? Nothing really else difference? Any difference in reliability OR service for Chevy vs GMC?

I live in URBAN sand diego so I don't really need to haul much or off road. what do you all think of duramax? worth it for non-hauler?

When looking for a new pickup in 2015 I was targeting these new Colorado's. I previously owned 2 Dodge Dakota's that gave me great service but Dodge exited the midsize pickup. At any rate I looked at the new Colorado's and found several things I did not like. The interior was typical of GM in that every component looked of cheap plastic. I previously owned a Chevy Blazer and nothing about the interior changed. The side fenders of the box were so high it was difficult to reach into the bed and place or grab items without using the tail gate. What eventually brought me to buying the 2015 Tacoma was the quality of the interior, low box fenders and lower MSRP. Yes I was shocked I could buy a similarly equipped Toyota cheaper than a Chevy. Maybe it was because Toyota had an old design but to me that means its was proven and reliable. At any rate I may purchase one of these Chevy's in the future but they need to listen to the consumer and give us what is important for a fair price. A 300+ HP engine is not that important to me since I do not regularly pull a trailer. If I did that I would have bought a full size pickup. At any rate I never thought I would own a foreign brand, I have always owned Chevy, Ford or Dodge. But my 15 Tacoma is the perfect vehicle for me at the right price and after 1+ yrs of ownership I can honestly say this was the best vehicle for me.

The Colorado needs a CD Player!!!
