Ford Upgrades 2017 Super Duty Work Trucks

Ford made two big announcements at the 2016 National Truck Equipment Association's Work Truck Show in Indianapolis: It's upgraded the Super Duty chassis cabs and the Power Stroke engine used in the F-650 and F-750.

The biggest news from Ford centers on the all-new 2017 F-350, F-450 and F-550 aluminum-bodied chassis-cab models, which will now be stronger and tougher due to heavier-duty axles, suspension pieces and frame; however, the most significant improvement for many commercial truck customers is that the stronger front axle now offers a higher weight rating, making it better able to accommodate large snowplows or other types of front-end equipment. Additionally, the new chassis cabs will have the highest gross combined weight ratings in the segment, with a max GCWR of 40,000 pounds. As for the available Power Stroke V-8 turbo-diesel engine, it will now make 30 more horsepower.

Other Ford news from the Work Truck Show, which runs Friday, included smaller improvements for the Power Stroke 6.7-liter V-8 turbo-diesel, making it both quieter at idle and at 60 mph. Ford is so confident about the upgraded Power Stroke turbo-diesel — available with 270, 300 or 330 hp — that it claims 90 percent of F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks won't need a major service (such as breaking into the cylinder heads or dropping oil pans) for 500,000 miles, a distance similar to traveling to the moon and back.

Yeah Yeah, Ford says a lot of things. Why don't they back up that statement with an warranty on the engine internals that extends 200000 miles beyond the basic warranty. Then i'll listen.

I now regret joining this site. It appears most of the posters here are nothing but bashers and really have no correct input at all. Just incorrect biased statements. The post from GMSRGREAT really proves that people here don't have any valid input and don't have a clue. It clearly shows on Fords website that the 6.7L in the medium duty trucks have a powertrain warranty of 5 years or 250K miles. That is not bad at all. Cummins is only 2 years unlimited miles with the option of buying a longer warranty. But only up to 300k miles. When you reach those kind of miles in that short of a time you are using it mostly highway and that greatly increases the service life of the diesel vs inter city travel. Life is reduced with those types of drive cycles. Just look at rebuild stats on school buses. Stop and go is hard on any engine.

I'm sure this will go on deaf ears so peace out. I will stick to forums with a more open to discussion peoplE that actually have an educated and more technicaly correct view point.

TTAC - The Truth About Cars is an awesome site with exceptionally intelligent bloggers but they don't cover truck news as well as PUTC.

Never seen any website with such poor comments on article after article. I really think they should make you login through facebook. Make EVERYONE use their real name. That would really do a lot to improve things by itself.

As a owner who has had two F-350's and a F-450, since 1999, I've never had a problem. I had a crack in the lower exhaust tube from the radiator on the F-450. They replaced radiator and all hose. That's it, my one service call in 17 years.

I like that they are 1) strengthening the frame (it's why I bought the F-450) and that they will be increasing the torque on the 6.7l.

The last one I had was the 6.4L and on mountain passes in Colorado, with 4200lbs in the bed and another 14,000 lbs out back, I would have liked a little more torque.

Time for Ford #4, looking forward to it! Built Ford Tough!

i would not kick ford around so much if i was having zoozoo build my engines or even when ford ownes cummines we got several 7.3 with 500 on em sill going plus a 6.7 with 300 only minor repair change oil and drive
