Vincentric Announces 2016 Pickups With the Best Value
The winners of the 12th annual Vincentric Best Value in America Awards for the 2016 model year have been announced, and there are some familiar names. All the pickup trucks that were recognized this year are previous award winners.
"The 2016 Vincentric Best Value in America awards show that when manufacturers measure and manage a vehicle's total cost of ownership, they are able to consistently deliver high value to consumers" Vincentric President David Wurster said in a statement. "Our analysis has identified award winning vehicles that have been purposefully developed with the intention of minimizing ownership costs, benefiting their customers."
Vincentric measures overall cost of ownership, averaged over the first five years of a vehicle's life in eight different categories: depreciation, fees and taxes, financing, fuel, insurance rates, maintenance, opportunity costs and likely repairs. The winners of each category offered lower than expected costs when compared to their competitors. More than 3,000 vehicle configurations were evaluated in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., using a range of annual mileage intervals and insurance profiles. Here are the winners in the pickup truck categories:
Small Pickup
Winner: 2016 Toyota Tacoma
Runner-up: 2016 Chevrolet Colorado
The Toyota Tacoma earned its 12th straight Vincentric victory by offering the best resale value, lowest expected repair costs and lowest total cost of ownership in its class.
Full-Size Half-Ton Pickup
Winner: 2016 Ford F-150
Runner-up: 2016 Toyota Tundra
The Ford F-150 has won this award five previous times and once again was determined to have the lowest expected maintenance costs, the lowest operating costs and lowest overall cost of ownership in its class.
Full-Size Three-Quarter-Ton Pickup
Winner: 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
Runner-up: 2016 Ram 2500
The Silverado 2500 has won this award seven times; this year it leads the competition in having both the lowest expected operating costs over the first five years of use as well as the lowest repair costs in its class.
Full-Size One-Ton Pickup
Winner: 2016 Ford F-350
Runner-up: 2016 Ram 3500
The Ford F-350 won its fifth Best Value in America Award, relying primarily on its strong resale value, lowest expected fixed costs and lowest total cost of ownership.

The pickup pecking order tends to remain fairly stable in relation to durability. GM and Ford tend to swap positions between 1st and 2nd place. Toyota always is in 1st for small trucks.
Damn F...king Ford's. LOL

Am I the only one playing peek-a-boo with Ram? This is kind
of a slap in the Rams horn for Guts, Glory, Ram. The Ram
2500 got runner-up status and thats like kissing your sister.
Lets see if the XD grabs a title next year, assuming they can
figure out just where to insert it.
If I were Mr. G. G. & R, I'd snort a bucket of nose goo, rev
my Cummins to a black smoke belching tirade and go find
some beer cans to flatten....

It is nice to see Ford and GM at the top. Not unexpected based on how well both do in the fleet I manage.

If the Ford trucks are so wonderful then why does Motor Trend - Truck Trend Magazines trash them and don't even bother to even feature them in any story?
I agree the Tacoma (I hate it) has the most value and best resale value.
Awards like this and comments make me chuckle all the time.
Did you know, that RAM won this award in all 3 categories 1/2ton ,3/4 ton and 1 ton in fleets and 1/2 ton category in consumers last year ?
What has changed between 2015 f150 and 2016 ? Just aluminium body and they say it's less expensive to operate and fix than last year model ?
Riiight .

So, not sure how financing comes into play?
Taco/Colorado/Frontier all cost the same, you finance any of them at the same rate your lender gives you..I pay cash...
Fees and taxes cost more on something that does not depreciate as much as the next vehicle.
What in the world is "opportunity costs"? Is that the price of wheels and tires to go along with a lift kit, winch bumper, led driving lights, bed shell or the price of the largest camping trailer you can tow with said truck...etc??????
Not a RAM to be found. it has been reported in the past Ram actually spent marketing dollars to hedge awards.
This list appears to be quite correct based on what other serious publication and auto experts agree.
2016 Best Value Truck Brand = Ford
2015 Best Value Truck Brand = Chevrolet
2014 Best Value Truck Brand = Chevrolet
Well, Chevrolet let Ford win one out of three.
@RAM - the fact that Ram only won it once shows that their quality and durability is hit and miss. The Ram 1500 was up to 3rd place in JD Power last year and isn't top 3 this year.
The same year Vincentric picked Ram for best "Consumer" value also rated GM HD's best for gas and diesel HD's in the commercial sector. That same year the F150 also got best ratings for commercial consumers.
The best way to approach these studies is to compare them to other industry indexes. Consumer Reports has rarely ever recommended Ram based on durability. JD Power only once put Ram 1500 in top 3. Vincentric usually recommends Ford in 1/2 ton and GM in HD.
On average Ram/Dodge is back of the pack for durability.
I drive a gmc 2015 15,000k and the only cost it's my fuel ,,,,so what is the big deal ,,,
I would use Cunsomers Reports on things they test and compare side by side, like appliances and such. Not vehicles at all. They send out questionaires to a few people to get an idea on a vehicle. I used them to buy a sports car, the vavle train went out outside of warranty, went out again 15,000 miles later. Found out the heads were not drilled correctly on all of these vehicles, the next year CR still had them listed as a Best Buy......

There a big difference with a magazine road testing a truck for a couple of days VS comparing test results stats from driving and owning one for a year. LOL
@Loubc
You are completely wrong. That awards is not about quality and durability.
Lou-BC, YA, Fords bottom of the barrel. lol

Babyengine V8 AKA hemi.
It is hard to take a pole very seriously when the total number of vehicles in the survey is less than what most companies sell a single model in a month. Plus the issue with Ford was already addressed as a major issue.
"That's something we've seen since at least 2011, when Ford's initial quality scores tumbled because of its dodgy MyFord Touch and SYNC systems."
The 2016 Study focused on vehicles from the 2013 model year, cataloging problems that 33,560 original owners experienced during the previous 12 months.
Hopefully now that Ford went to Sync 3, it will turn some of these round for them.

hmmm... no merger with GM
hmmmm....no buyer
The only one to be kicked around is a blue collar worker - why because Marchionne does not know how manage and make a profit.
@ blueman
Who won Truck Trends Truck of the Year for 2015 ?
Sorry @blueman that was meant for @lou DC.
Cool
Chevy Colorado is the 2016 truck of the year!
THE F-150 WASN'T EVEN IN THE RUNNING!
No surprise for the Toyota Tacoma!
KBB award winner overall best value retention after 5 years and now this!
@Lou
I disagree with your inaccurate assessments that constantly attack the Ram pickups.
In no way am I stating that Ram is the best. I will state that the 2015 SLT Hemi I'm driving around Miami is very good.
I do believe I'm better qualified than you in judging pickups, not only in the US, but globally.
So please stop with the over and under statements that tend to 'sell' Ford.
Shocking, no FIAT hairdresser vehicles.
Yeah, well, you get to 150,000 miles with that Colorado diesel, fork over a bunch of money to get it's timming BELT changed.
Or do it yourself, but what are they thinking that they put a belt on that engine?
Some people buy trucks expecting to trade them off in the next 3 years or 4 years.
Next one I buy I expect to put on 200,000 miles, and I want to hold onto it for about 10 years or more. I sure don't want to take a bunch of money and throw it into changing the timing belt.
It's official the in 2015 the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 outsold the Ford F150!!!
This is possibly the biggest story in the pick-up world and you guys haven't written an article or breached the subject in any way.
Where is the sales break down article? Someone needs to call Ford on their BS.
@ Lou DC
Reading comprehension not one of your strong suits ???
Well, the Edmunds long term F-150 test tells a different story
One of poor mileage, (2.7 turbo), a rough and jitery ride when empty, shakes at idle, truck comes apart in car wash, an engine oil leak (they had to wait for the dealerships one authorized guy to fix it), a Ford tech had no clue he had overfilled the crankcase by 4 quarts or so, so they did it themselves next, and of course, when you pull out the drain plug, Ford's funky design, you get oil all over the sway bar! That's after you take off the cover underneath the engine, which they said they were getting tired of messing with. ( a friend of mine with the Tundra has something similar he's very tired of)
You would think as much as these F-150s cost they would have it a little bit more sorted out.
Entertaining results, but the small brand count in each truck category and comparison as a percentage to an average makes for the possibilities of obscene inaccuracies. The "Average used for the comparison is based just a couple of data points. This makes the final "winner" results useless except to spur more entertaining bouts of "see mine is bigger then yours". The 3/4 ton graph highlights this problem.
For example, if you look at the actual 3/4 ton graph, the winner won because it had a cost that lost the least compared to the average as a percentage. The problem is the average here on four data points has very little confidence. If you look at the graph, you see that ALL of the other (THREE) truck dots in the graph had less total cost then the winner. ALL. On a "dollars out of your pocket" measure, the "winner" cost more to buy and had the highest total cost the the other three -- it won due to sloppy math and using an arbitrary comparison to a sloppy average.
This does not mean the data is useless -- well, since we are only told "their" winner, it is useless other that in this case, their "winner" had the highest actual cost-out-of-pocket of ownership. If the actual numbers were give for the other dots, it would be useful to me. For example, I myself want to know what truck was the dot in the lower left which had the actual lowest buying price AND lowest cost of ownership EVEN IF it was not the "winner" using their percentage math. I don't want a really initially expensive truck that even totally cost more to own, but keeps a bit more of its value after 5 years.
Shocking. RAM decimated the competition.
http://vincentric.com/Home/Best-Value-Awards/2015-Best-Value-in-America/2015-Best-Fleet-Value-in-America-Winners-List
Miath - only cost is fuel?
When do you plan on changing the oil?
@Ram - to quote you:
"Shocking. RAM decimated the competition."
but earlier you said:
You are completely wrong. That awards is not about quality and durability."
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
what a mo ron.
Again using depreciation as a factor-depreciation is a very nebulous figure-it can change on a whim when used vehicle buyers decide to opt for a different make, model or trim that might put an otherwise totally perfect used vehicle at the bottom of their shopping list. In other instances, 'Yota buyers will pay more for a used Yota simply because its a Yota. Though the Taco is good and has been the leader in midsize for a reason up to now, the rest of the Yota lineup is nothing special. Blind brand loyalty for a vehicle that is outclassed by other makes and models doesn't mean they merit higher prices resulting in less depreciation. I wish they would quit using depreciation in their calculations. Give me purchase price, total average maintenance costs over five years-that way I know what I have to pay out of my pocket. I'll worry about trade in or resale value later, unless I'm leasing it no one can guarantee what my ride will be worth in one month let alone five years.
@Loubc
My statements doesn't contradict each other. RAM decimated the competition in this award last year. Which part of decimated you don't understand ?
@Ram, Lou-BC is drunk on the Ford blue koolaid. He dismisses anything negative toward them. Quick to point out anything negative about the class leading Rams. Sticks his head in the sand about how shitty Ford is. Ford techs buying the superior Ram after seeing all the problems with Fords day in and day out. Ford has NOTHING to compete with my COMBAT PROVEN Power Wagon. That's right not military grade military PROVEN. Dodge the first vehicle used in the AMERICAN military. Patton loved his Dodge command car. I can't blame him.

Lou_BC is only concerned about payload on half ton pickups. How the hell else is he gonna haul his girlfriends around?? So his next truck will circle his choice just like his last truck. The Blue Oval all the way! Lmfao!!!!
FORDS THE BEST
40,000 MILES IN 4YEARS AND ONLY 4 REPAIRS,CANT BEAT THAT !!!!!!
I GOT THE TURBO REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY THANKS TO FORD UPSTANDING SERIVCE AND STANDING BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES,NEW AXLES AND A NEW COMPUTER !!
I LOVE MY RELIABLE FORD,I GAVE IT NOTHING BUT PRAISES IN MY CONSUMERS ANUAL REVIEW.
FORD ROREVER !
supercliffy -When I buy the 1st thing I look at is Consumer Reports then JD Power and then several other sources of durability data.
Until those sources put Ram in 1st place for durability I will not buy one.......unless I get an exceptional deal(i.e. much cheaper than anyone else) and extended warranty.
With the exception of 2015 Ram has never placed top 3 in JD Power. They rarely ever have been recommended by CR.
If it makes you happy I'd be reluctant to by an Ecoboost F150 since they don't have the same durability as the 5.0. The current Chevy is my favourite truck but CR dropped them in 2015 due to typical new vehicle year issues.
bat - depreciation is a factor in calculating value. Fleets tend not to care about that since 3 years is the typical write off on a truck.
@Loubc
Just wait for Mercedes pickup truck. It will be on the top of your priorities, better than anything else. Let us know, how you like it then.
RAM - I like the Mercedes 6x6. The small truck they plan to release is just a rebadged Nissan. I'd buy a Tacoma if i wanted a small truck.
Oh and usually Tacoma rates #1 in durability.
Lou,
So you are so arrogant to not respond to a 'newcomer' to this sit?
Why?
Hmm
Because I'm currently renting a Hemi powered Ram. As an aside to the Ram guys I'm returning 14-15mpg average.
RAM decimated the competition alright...they won a $105 million dollar fine that no other manufacturer did.
http://blog.caranddriver.com/fca-will-buy-back-578000-ram-trucks-after-failed-recalls/
578,000 rams ..a huge buy back and the company continues to ignore recalls....
This is the beginning of the end.... Fiat will be the nail in the coffin this time!
Interest the Tacoma, repeatedly rusting the underside completely out, is listed as a best value? Another crock only an idiot would buy. I guess it is a good value for some, my brother in-law had Toyota give him $10k for his 2007 Tacoma, buying it back because of frame rot. Then he bought a used 2010 Tacoma and Toyota bought it back for frame rot. All along, my 99 GMC has little rust and runs rings around brand new fords, toyota, and rams.
Great to see a Mexican brand like Ford barely beat out Toyota...lol
The Tundra hasn't really been redesigned in years...yet Ford is proud it is in first....lol
Way to go Ford....heeeeheeeee
