Best-Selling Pickup Trucks: May 2016
Although several automakers had strong Memorial Day weekend sales events, the fact that this May had two fewer selling days when compared with last year seemed to significantly hurt monthly sales totals. Add to that a lackluster economy in many sectors and you begin to see why some analysts are predicting a year-end sales number significantly lower than the strong finish we had in 2015.
Ford was the big pickup truck winner in May as the only full-size truckmaker in the green as dealers try to clear out 2016 Super Duty supplies to make way for the all-new 2017 models set to start shipping by early fall. F-150 production at both plants is at full tilt.
At first glance, GM looks like it took a big hit with the Chevrolet Silverado absorbing a double-digit month-over-month sales drop, but both its midsize players — the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon — held their own, up double digits for the year. The other big midsize winner for May was the aging Nissan Frontier, while the all-new Tacoma struggled.
Expect continued competition through the summer months, as spring thaws and heavy rain damage are likely to stimulate big construction projects in the South and Southwest. We'll have a closer look at midsize, full-size and brand sales breakdowns in a few days.

WOW! Ford way up with less sales dates. That's impressive!
Before the GM fans start to think they are doing better, just look at raw numbers. The Tacoma is one truck while GM has two and they still cannot outsell the Tacoma!
Remember last year, older Tacoma still outsold the new Colorado for a full year!
Wow, I cannot believes GM throwing 9-10K on the hood did not allow them to sell more.
I cannot believe Silverado is down 12.7% after winning the shootout and after throwing $12k on the hood.
With fiat offering $200.00 a month leases is allowing then to gain on chevy.
Told you GM sales were gonna tank.
GM should discount $15K-20K to push those trucks off the cliff.
Uber Fail.
As RIC Flair would say, woooooooooooh!!!!!!! MILITARY GRADE number 1 again as it is every month, every year, every decade. Woooooooooh!!!!! MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE, MILITARY GRADE!!!!!!!!! Wooooooooooh!!!!!!! THE BEST NEVER REST!!!!
Hmm, the oldest truck there is the one with the best YTD and month/month increases.
Ouch Nissan. That hot new Titan is not selling so hot.

Look at the math. You can have huge percentages with a small increase of actual numbers. Just like you can have huge increase in numbers and the comparing percentage is low. You have to actually look at the numbers to see the figures.
Hey, ooxxii, GM is selling as many Colorado's and Canyons as they make every month. GM had planned on 10,000 per month but could not meet demand so they are working 3 shifts and weekends.
Has anyone lost a job over the Titan XD fiasco yet? WOW! At least Nissan can sell the Frontier.
GM fullsize trucks down about the same as the midsize are up. I knew when execs said midsize would not cannibalize fullsize sales they were FOS. Maybe when they go under this time Ford can absorb their best vehicles, but I don't know what they would be. Corvette?
May-thru-August is the bloody time of year in this business. It's all about discounts and clearance. Wait till September-thru-December timeframe to see who wins.
Till then it's gonna be pretty quiet unless you count fleet sales.
No surprise here ford is at the top as usual, and in the green all the way, chevy and gmc have nothing on military grade cant even combine them and win.....nice job FOrd
Fairly quiet in here for best selling pickup truck blogs compared to historical post counts. Only 1 fullsize truck had increases in sales!!!!! All other fullsize are garbage and nobody wanta them as their sales numbers fall. Sales numbers dont lie and what is even funnier is gm had a midcycle refresh and are losing sales. Lol!!!!
@Furd Twuck - commercial fleet sales are very profitable. Trucks tend to get abused and therefore need more maintenance. Abuse also shortens service life. That abuse tanks residual value therefore exerting little pressure on the used truck market.
What city does your wife work at?
Must be big if they are buying hundreds of trucks every year.
Most companies that need extra trucks for seasonal work variations will go with short term leases or just rent.
I don't know of any municipalities buying hundreds of pickups per year.

I agree. Rental companies buy large quantities of vehicles every year but they are all brands and types. Very little trucks. Places like Uhaul buy a few every year and right now they are getting the lowest bidder either now, Fiat. But they are getting some F650. With the gas engine they would be the cheapest in that class. We buy 20 to 40 new cars and trucks every year. But that can change easily based on available capital. I never heard of a city manager either. I have friends that work for cities and while they are heads of their departments, they do the bidding. Not a manager. Plus cities already have special pricing. So not much bidding is needed.
It just astounds me that the GM boys act like GM has no fleet sales. You must not be paying attention going through the construction sites and past the rental parks, etc., etc......
I do no that I'm seeing alot of new Colorado in fleet use here in Phoenix. Especially municipalities
FCA + 1.5

Last I checked, this site was called PICKUPTRUCKS.COM, oh wait, you're trvlling, woops. My bad, make sure you BUY AMERICA OR SAY GOODBYE TO AMERICA, man that guy is an uber idiot. Shame he lives in California like me.
FML.
@PUTC
"The other big midsize winner for May was the aging Nissan Frontier, while the all-new Tacoma struggled."
Except the Toyota plant had to shut down due to weather and probably had some vehicles damaged due to the floods, weather damage.
All those affected by the master cylinder recall probably trade to a new truck as Ford had no ETA on when the parts would be available. I would trade if my truck had the possibility of losing brakes, but who knows Ford might end up recalling these new trucks too 3-4 years down the road after NHTSA makes Ford issue a recall.
@Johnny Doe.
I see your Camaro sales came in 3rd this Month behind Mustangs & Challengers. What's your excuse this Month for lack of sales? LOL
true about the mustang vs camaro. i purchased a new mustang in May and love it!!

Nitro, yesterday it was a lesson in geography and now today a lesson in math. When I combine all GM truck sales for the ytd, GM is ahead by 45,129 truck sales. For May, GM is ahead by 7,822 truck sales. May I suggest some night classes at a local college. Anyways, those GM midsize are beginning to steal from their big Brothers. These midsize market sales well eventually explode and FORD will be on the outside looking in, a feeling often experienced by the Ford faithful. It's said what stubbornness will do to people.

His excuse will be that Ford/Fiat sold them to Fleets.
Let's do some math:
223,990 + 89,304 + 42,178 + 13,964 = 369436
The above sum is the combined sales of all GM trucks. Of course, some would criticize GM for the separate brands and re-entering the midsize market, but it looks like it has paid off. GM is outselling Ford.
Trucks are a lucrative market, even mid-sized trucks.
FCA #1 in US light truck sales, again.
For the second month in a row, FCA US sold more light trucks than Ford or General Motors.
The tally was 170,277 for FCA, 167,433 for Ford, and 166,647 for GM.

Minivans, Vans???
This is PUTC, go crawl back into your hole.
They are listed as light trucks for everyone.
Here it is again as it is every time this info is posted. At the very top it clearly says Ford-F Series not F250/F350 etc...it says F SERIES...NOT F-150....so with out a break down I would be led to think it's all F Series...list them all separate then lets see.
It seems that people like recycled beer cans. Maybe we can put that concern behind us now. I know that I sure do like mine.
Keep in mind that one of the F150 plants was shut down for a week in early May, hurting production now with the goal of increasing it later. Ford is going to kick some booty in the light truck market now that both plants are ready to rock. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-28/ford-to-shut-f-150-truck-factory-for-a-week-due-to-slack-demand
Tacoma sales still falling and Colorado Canyon sales still growing. Just a matter of time!

fiat has to count in minivan sales to try and beat GM and Ford in light truck sales. Man that company is just a complete POS.
GM and Ford counts Minivans and SUVs for light trucks as well.
What's your point ?
FCA is #1 in Light Trucks. Ford counts F series. What a complete POS. LOL.
Yep ford at the top as predicted; where is Big Al these days??!! I actually miss his anti-Ford doomsday aluminum strategy predictions...
Anyways, GMSRNOTGREAT can replace him to eat that crow...again...ha ha ha!!!

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, I don't remember any Ford or GM minivans. What an idiot.
Alls you have to do is look at the top of the page and see what trucks are pictured there. Its that easy. No mini vans anywhere. Combine what you want too but in the end, look at the picture above. Enough said.

Sounds like there was a bogo sale on Fords tin can model.

Only offers I see for superduty is 3K off a diesel XL with appearance package. What do you see?
It is hilarious how the Ford faithful see a picture of their beloved vehicle and automatically assume that Ford sold the most. If they were to get an education, say, learn how to read with some arithmetic thrown in to the mix, imagine how surprised they would be.
Funny to me that a picture is worth thousands. In case you didn't know, this site post the pictures of the best selling trucks at the top of the page. Pretty simple to some but I guess not to some Idiots.
GMSRNOTGREAT - just give it up; the only arithmetic you never admit too is GM needs 2 brands with 4 different trucks to barely beat Ford's one brand of full size trucks...go get a life & stop being a moron...
Much agreed, Ford selling out to the fleets/rental companies and giving away every 2016 super turd to help them this month.
It must suck being Ford right now, retail (real people) won't touch them used beer cans LOL! Must really suck having to sell to people that are less likely to be repeat buyers
booohooooo,......frank is making me cry, I hate that guy.

Hey johnny dildoe - It feels great right now being Ford & at the top looking down at GM's POS trucks with their mystery unsolved shaking going on...ha ha ha
Hahaha! There you go again, looking at a picture and thinking Ford is on the top. Top of the page but not top in sales. Have an educated friend, maybe one of your GM buddy's add the #'s for you.

Hey uber idiot, if this were the case, PUTC would have done so post a pic of what a GM 1500, NEW FLASH!!! GM does not count them all together. Damn DOLT.
