GM Disputes Need to Recall Its Takata Airbag Inflators

On the heels of recalling 1.9 million Takata airbag inflators Thursday, GM says its own analysis shows those parts in the recalled SUVs and pickup trucks don't contain the defect that causes the inflators to spew shrapnel into the car's cabin when the airbags inflate.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration disagreed with GM's assessment, and GM issued Thursday's recall for Takata airbag inflators on the passenger-side of the recalled vehicles. GM isn't the only automaker to issue this recall; it joined four other automakers that issued recalls Thursday. Ford, Toyota and 11 other automakers also recalled passenger-side Takata airbag inflators in recent days as part of NHTSA's massive expansion of the Takata recall.

GM told the Associated Press that none of the Takata inflators in its trucks has ruptured in some 44,000 crashes, and none of the returned inflators has exhibited the problems that led to the recall. GM said the inflators were designed specifically for its trucks and SUVs, and have greater venting and machined-steel end caps.

"We don't have any evidence at this point that these inflators aren't working as designed," GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson told AP. NHTSA, however, disagrees. "The science clearly shows that these inflators become unsafe over time," NHTSA spokesman Bryan Thomas said.

"GM told the Associated Press that none of the Takata inflators in its trucks has ruptured in some 44,000 crashes, and none of the returned inflators has exhibited the problems that led to the recall"

That is a lot of crashes that GM knows about....

Well this is an interesting wrinkle....

What do you expect NHTSA to say?

What do you expect GM to say?

Everyone is saying what one would expect each one to say so far...

Thursday, GM says its own analysis shows those parts in the recalled SUVs and pickup trucks don't contain the defect that causes the inflators to spew shrapnel into the car's cabin when the airbags inflate.

So if they can confirm those airbags do not have the suspect defect I can see why they would not need to issue a recall. But they better hope they are correct because it takes only one accident and confirmed death to turn into a really big problem.

Judging by the things they knew back when all those people were hurt/killed, I'd say dont believe a thing they say

Gee, Em! That's the worst car company ever!

So let me get this straight GM taking a chance on peoples lives
AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All i can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sure am glad i dont own GM JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What Junk Car of a Company, MAN UP GM, better yet, go ahead cheat the consumer.

I HOPE YOU GO BANKRUPT AND DIE GM!!!!

You don't deserve to be alive. DOLTS

So once again GM proves that they do not care about the safety of their customers and refuse to do the right thing.

GO FORD. YOU'RETHE BEST SELLING TRUCK ON THE MARKET AND CHEBBY GOING ALUMINUM THAT MAKES GOVERNMENT MOTOR A FOLLOWER.

Good for you Eric...I'm glad you'd rather have Ford kill you!

Ford's Failure-to-Park Recall, 1980:
Ford was forced to front the repair bill for more than 20 million vehicles after a safety defect in their transmission system caused more than 6,000 accidents, 1,700 injuries and 98 deaths. At the heart of the recall was a failed safety catch, which allowed Ford's automobiles to spontaneously slip from "Park" to "Reverse" without warning. Accounting for damages claimed in lawsuits, the recall ended up losing Ford around $1.7 billion according to company officials.

Fire Strikes Ford Vehicles, 1996:
Just months after a faulty ignition scandal rocked the company, the Michigan automaker was forced to recall a massive 14 million vehicles after it was revealed that a small electronic switch used to deactivate the cruise control function when the brake was applied could overheat and start a fire. At the cost of $20 a switch, the fix is estimated to have cost the company around $280 million.

Ford Ignition Problem, 1996:
During the late '80s, Ford installed ignition switches in its vehicles that were prone to short circuit, leading to overheating, smoking and occasionally full-blown fires within the steering column. Sometimes the switches even ignited when the car was parked and turned off. Luckily, Ford managed to recall the flaming igniters before any injuries were reported. After all was said and done, the incendiary mistake cost the company around $200 million.

GOVERMENT MOTORS HAS MANY RECALLS TOO THAT CAN KILL PEOPLE LIKE THE IGNITION SWITCH ON THE COBALT, CHEATING ON FUEL ECONOMY ON THE ARCADIA, BRAKES, SLAPING PISTONS, REAR DIFFERENTIAL YOU NAME IT AND THERE ARE MORE TO COME.

THEY SHOULD RECALL THE SPEEDOMETER CLUSTERS TOO ON THE CHEBBY. IT SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE BUYING THEM LIKE HOT CAKES ON THE JUNK YARD WHERE I WORK.

Why is everyone bashing GM for? Its problem. All did GM was just it looked at the inflators and didn't see a problem with them like the other inflators, they still went ahead with the recall.

Think most of this Takata crap is just NHTSA flexing some muscles, since they done a poor job with all these safety problems popping up lately.

Its Takata problem.*

Ummm. It appears GM recalled them anyway.

"GM said that it would begin the recall process in cooperation with the NHTSA even though it doesn't believe inflators in its trucks are unsafe."

Did everyone here ride the short bus to school.

Excerpt from article above.

44000 tests performed and not one failure. Sounds like Takata did manufacture that piece to " GM " specifications. Where is the problem? Ford didn't resist because they know what they themselves are capable of.

This had nothing to do with Ford & of course it turned into one;

The GMSRNOTGREAT & Ford orgullosa de ser Mexicana guys (or little girlies) should quit acting like Politian candidates by posting hate stuff from the last century & be more matured presidential & discuss more real current events & issues like;

http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/watch-a-700-hp-chevy-camaro-burst-into-flames-suddenly/ar-BBtPYUH?ocid=spartandhp

Lionel go cry and play with your dolls some where else, we don't want to hear it. GM never made a 700 HP Camaro so end of story kid.

Ford and their lying cruise control recall didn't work. After having it done my 2001 F-150 still burned to the ground. They win. You lose. That's the truth.

VW and Audi, among others, are still installing the affected airbags in their new cars! Another Govt. loophole that says the bags should be fine for a couple years before decomposing to the point of shotgun status.
They don't have to tell buyers this until the recall in two years.

Apologies for off topic violation;
I find few post's worth reading here.

Have the angry, sophomoric posters run off the respectful ones?

It seems like the comment section has an age demographic of 13-26 yr olds who don't understand civility. (#1 rule listed)

It appears that Bombastic Bloviating has become the New American Standard for discussion.

That's good info VW and Audi Steveadore
