GM Moves Van Production to Make More Midsize Pickups

Express passenger 1 II

In order to open more production capacity at its Wentzville, Mo., assembly plant for the hot-selling Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, General Motors has contracted with Navistar International to take over production of chassis-cab models of GM's aging full-size vans.

Navistar will be build the cutaway models at its Springfield, Ohio, plant, freeing up as much as 40,000 units of capacity at the Missouri plant, according to a report in Automotive News. Production of the cargo and passenger versions of the vans (the Chevy Express and GMC Savana) will continue at the Wentzville plant, and it also will build the cab for the cutaway models before it is shipped to Navistar to be attached to the chassis.

It's good news for Chevy and GMC dealerships who have been asking for more variations and trim levels of the smaller, less-expensive pickups. Sales of the Chevy Colorado are up more than 20 percent for the first five months of 2016 over the period in 2015, while the GMC Canyon is up more than 11 percent.

I really like the new colorado and especially canyon. Too bad they are so expensive. Not enough bang for the buck when compared to a half ton. and just not enough capacity for my primary truck. I hope they sell a ton of them though so I can pick up a used one for relatively cheap someday as a second truck. Until then I'll stick with my old ranger and f150 as my primary truck.

By the way. I heard an ad on the radio today for a huge sale on the nissan titan. I always said the only chance they had for decent sales numbers were with huge discounts like the big three sometimes offer. Now I think even with huge discounts they won't sell much. Still haven't seen one.

@beebe

Do you actually believe the ads for cars & trucks on radio and tv?

Good news. Hopefully those midsized diesels are selling well.

My inside sources told me that they are making room for the New Blazer at their Wentzville plant and adding another 400 workers. They love the money but the OT is killing them,,,,

Meanwhile Ford Transit is mopping the floor with the competition including Mercedes;

Hey Ford orgullosa de ser Mexicana;

When you've gotten over the shock of discovering Ford Transit sales blew the competition out of the water, all within less than a year from release date. Even if you combine all the competition figures together (you know a bit like GOVT motors math logic) - they are still miles ahead.

Now, another challenge for you; instead of hiding behind an idiotic name such as 'Ford orgullosa de ser Mexicana' as firstly, it really ain't accurate;

You should consider maybe...

Chevy shake orgullosa de ser mexicana

OR

RAM recall orgullosa de ser mexicana

OR

Show us your real name...

Yep, I guessed correct again...you won't have the balls...hahaha...you're looser.

did you guys see the test where the 4 cyl diesel in the GMC Canyon OUT-TOWED the F-150 with the 5.0 ?

AMAZING !

That would be amazing.

Think you're the only one that saw that test. Yep.

You have a link to that?

@PAPA JIM
Yeah actually I've bought many new trucks over the years. often after hearing of a sale and then going to check out the prices. Sometimes it isn't much of a sale, but usually it is. I have never in my life heard an ad for a Nissan titan sale. Titan isnt selling well. So yeah it makes sense that they are offering big discounts. In fact I'm surprised they aren't offering more than the advertised 8000 off. But they are calling it huge discounts. I have no doubt ot is true

Orgullosa ford.

My old ranger has never given me any problems other than an alternator and my "gas guzzler" 4 cylinder with manual transmission averages 26 to 27 mpg per tank. It's actually been a fantastic truck that cost less to buy used than a decent four wheeler.

Hey RAM recall orgullosa de ser Mexicana (there you go, I corrected it for ya...heh heh);

Instead of posting negative crap like a Trump supporter - you should try posting positive stuff such as;

Hey, together we can make America great again...negativity only brings more negativity...

not sure why they would do this when the ones they have now dont sell

I don't know why but there's something about cutaway vans I like. Navistar and GM, are you listening? Outfit them with a truck utility/service bed straight from the factory, especially a 10' bed with a ladder rack and a duramax option.

Why don't you just get your own bed

Normally I'd agree with you. Most dealer ads announcing a big sale on their pickups ends up being a sale on only certain trims or configurations.

But

In this case, there are only a few trims and options available on the Titan. If there's a sale on only a certain trim or configuration of the Titan right now, that's still a big chunk of the Titan inventory.

Yeah the V6 Ranger is the gas guzzler. The 4cyl isn't as bad.

@skinner

I used to have a 1994 Ranger XLT stick shift 4 cylinder. It got better mileage than my 2010 Ranger XL 4 cylinder by quite a margin on the highway. Around town, no difference.

Both of those engines were fine for a small trucklet.

The 94 was the old Ford 2.3 Pinto SOHC motor and the later one was an all alloy Ford (Mazda) DOHC 2.3

The second gen motor should have been the big winner but my old 2 valve SOHC got better highway mileage. Go figure.
