May 2016 Pickup Sales Breakdown

11 Tacoma Limited

Some analysts are saying May was not a good month for the auto industry, which was down 6.1 percent overall due in large part to a quirk in the calendar. But if you split cars from pickup trucks, SUVs, vans and crossovers (considered the light-truck segment), the differences are even more pronounced. Passenger cars are down by 16 percent while the light-truck segment is up almost 2.5 percent.

As we've done for the last few months, we've broken down the monthly and year-to-date pickup segment into three charts (see below) to show which manufacturer is winning the growing midsize pickup race and the full-size pickup race; we also compare all the pickup brands. We hope to have more detailed data on the full-size truck sales breakdown for 2015 by July, even though manufacturers do not provide sales data that separates half-ton sales from three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickup sales.

Ford! Nice work.

Nice breakdown.

Look forward to a breakdown of 1/2 ton, 3/4 & 1 ton sales.

I think the GM twins will take the 1/2 market.

The rest belongs to Ford.

Well the Silverado 1500 (alone) did outsold the F 150 in 2015.

It looks like GM is pickup manufacturer after all. Exactly like I said.

Ford boats about their best-selling pickup all the time. How come GM doesn't brag about selling more overall pickups then?

Ford #1 month after month, year after year. Must be the Military Grade Aluminum. LOL

These figures are insightful, but comparing this point last year to now would be good too.....

That's a lot of people buying Chevy's with that godawful front end. Some people just have no taste. Don't buy an ugly truck!

@jonwyo, cuz they cant, its 2 different brands, it already looks bad that they need 2 brands to compare to Ford since they cant compare just one, Ford wins everytime.

@Mark do one of these for the 2015 year of sales please! Been waiting 6 months for it now... Haha

Look at the last chart bimbo.

It's surprising how badly the all new Titan does in the marketplace. I seriously doubt Nissan is going to recoup the investment in R&D of this model. After all, the XD tweener concept and the expensive low mileage diesel option wasn't that great idea.

The exterior design isn't that impressive, the '03 Titan was very nice looking truck at its debut. They should have gone all the way to the 2500 towing capacity, it didn't make sense to limit the towing to 12.000 lbs when something similar can be done with half ton truck. No need for V8 turbo to do that.

As it is it doesn't surprise the Titan didn't find much success, perhaps the regular version with the updated gas V8 can do better.

About the mid-size market, Ford should have the international Ranger ready just in case fuel costs go up. But 100-200K units per year probably can't justify a special model for the US-Canada market. What Ford has to do is introduce a F-150 with a 3.0 V6 diesel, if they can get 30 mpg it would sell well and full-size pickups should keep their value better for low leasing rates. Not sure what are they waiting for with a diesel.

@Ram see I told you they start crying and making stuff up, but the last chart don't lie HAHAHAHA!

Nissan's problem is the damn XD truck is too heavy. Despite the impressive 555lbtq, it's own dead weight sets its abilities right back into regular halfton territory.

That full sized pickup graphic puts things into perspective. After a few initial Titan fans bough the XD diesel, XD sales have settled into obscurity and May included XD gasser roll out. Stick a fork in the XD's first model year.

Good questions, Lou. Also where are the Nissan reps and journalists who said they would sell 150k of these Titans a year, also where's all the media that claimed the Titan was a bad but the new truck would "clearly" sell better than the old. Nissan sold barely 12,000 Titans last year. Looks like they will barely beat that dismal total.

Tacoma remains king of the hill.

@LOU, no he was banned.....there's a few more that are on that fence...

That last chart tells the whole story, right down to the nuts and bolts. GM's twins sells more than both of Ford's ugly sister trucks.

@gms, dont you have a membership to the local kiddy pool? That would be a better excuse than you bring here

Well, some of you ford guys were also saying, that Fred Diaz with Cummins in Titan will hurt the RAM . I said no, and I was right. RAM knew, why to stay away from V8 cummins.
Gasoline Titan is much better fit and could be success.

Which twins? I come up with Chevy and GMC full size twins at 313294 total this year.

TWO AGAINST ONE NOT FAIR. THEY FEAR THE NUMBER ONE KING OF TRUCKS. THATS WHY THEY HAVE BUILD TO DIFFERENT TRUCK LINES.

@Lionel,

so basically you're admitting that GM sells more trucks than Ford...

Please speak up, we can't hear you.

1st Chart #1 Toyota Tacoma beat out the GM twins.
2nd Chart #1 Ford F-series beat out the GM twins.
3rd Chart doesn't count if you loss in the 1st and 2nd Chart. LOL

Anybody know of any incentives on the Canyon/Colorado? GM laughs all the way to the bank when one of these is sold.

Once they arrived at the bank, they'll have to cough up the dough to pay families of the people they killed.

Seems like the Colorado is catching up to the Tacoma in sales! Just look at the ratio from the Year to date sales, and then at the monthly ratio! Chevy is catching up! never mind when you add in the Canyon sales also! I am not taking anything away from the Tacoma, which is a fine truck, but the GM twins, started on a new slate, a slate started a few years ago in the overseas world market, and then tailored to the domestic market, and it seems like GM has a winner! I am totally satisfied with my new Colorado, after test driving all four mid sizes trucks from all the manufacturers, and getting a great deal at my local Chevy dealer. The new Z-71 with a V-6 Tow package, and the Bose/Navigation 8" touch screen, heated seats and climate control is very comfortable. The truck pulls my travel trailer great! and get better mpg then the 2011 Silverado 5.3 Z-71!, I traded in on the Colorado. NOt as much power, but plenty, with no gear hunting on the hills, and to be able to tow a 5,500 lbs trailer and get 16 mpg average! is amazing! Yes on the last trip to up state N.Y., from Cape Cod, that is just what I got! normally I get around 17 city and 24 hyw!, so to be able to tow, and get from 14-16 mpg is fine by me! There is a friend that tows the very same trailer I have, with a new Tacoma, and he is not getting more than 13-14 mpg, and on the bigger hills, on the Mass. Pike, we were able to pull away from him without any problem! We both pulled over at the rest area at the highest point to check the computer readout for mpg, his was at 10 mpg, mine was at 12!, and that was while we were trying to go from a side by side start at 60 mph, and then taking off, on the uphill, called the Berkshire Mountains, along rt 90 in Mass. It is a 7 mile 5-6% grade, I was able to maintain the speed limit of 65 easily from 60 mph start, while he was just able to reach 65mph by highest point, but there is about a 40 hp difference.

Hasn’t been all that long ago Ford was at the top of every chart and now only one by a small margin. I can now see why 3 weeks ago at the stock holders meeting the stock holders wanted to tar and feather Mark Fields and run him off.

Good job GM for being the #1 pickup truck manufacture.
Even though ford calls all their trucks F series. they are different trucks : 1/2 ton 3/4 and so on. What if Lincoln started making trucks again would you add them to the f series sales.? I would, it's still a Ford. You guys are just playing with names. So far GM sold more trucks get over it.

Even though chevy calls all their trucks silverado. they are different trucks : 1/2 ton 3/4 and so on.

Even though GMC calls all their trucks sierra. they are different trucks : 1/2 ton 3/4 and so on.

What if Lincoln and started making trucks again would you add them to the f series sales.? I would, it's still a Ford.

Of course I would becuse I also added the Avalanche to the Chevy totals when they were still being made and I also added the Cadillac EXT when I used to t/roll this site.

Why because I have low self esteem and this makes me feel good.

This is Michigan Boob and I approve of this message.

PS Stop picking on my son johnny doe or I will have my father papa jim have a talk with you.

Wow
Sounds like like I hit a soft spot. Take it easy Lionel... It's only my opinion.

That's not twins. Twins would be both full size or baby size. you are talking about 4 sisters.

Ford guys are something else...call all the GM guys crazy cuz they are counting all the apples together instead of seperating them... with just the Silverado 1500 alone Chevy has out sold the F-150 in 9 of the past 15 years... combined with its "identical twin with makeup" (thats the Sierra for those of you confused) GM has out sold the F150 for most of the past 39 yrs of Fords "supposed claim to fame" but really at the end of the day...WHAT DOES IT MATTER?????...Let me answer for you.... IT DOENS''T you are all going to drive what you are driving (with the exception of the children on here who obviously don't have thier drivers licence yet)... so get over it.... and move on with your life.... truck sales from all brands are good for the economy....

combined with its "identical twin with makeup

Technically that is not correct. GMC and Chevy has different sheet metal designs. Different front end designs. Different suspension tuning and in some cases designs. They share similar engines, transmissions, differentials and I am sure the frames. But they are far from identical. Technically.

Graphs kind of put it in prespective how far the different brands of full size are behind ford full size. Chevy full size are over 100,000 units behind ford full size, ram full size is even farther back and gmc full size are even farther back yet. I wish chevy, ram and gmc as well as ford break down there 1/2 tons and hd's into numbers. They all hide them for some reason. Also it would be nice to see US sales, also north american sales graphs and charts that include canada and mexico would be nice to see.

What the heck!? Either you are thick as a brick or just side stepping again the simple math just like all other GOVT motor fan boys - repeat again;

Ford's SINGLE BRAND F-series full size trucks still outsell the COMBO TWO BRANDS from GOVT motors (Chevy/GMC) full size trucks.

So thank you for making yourself look more idiotic again by confirming my point - a repeat; YES, they all include 1/2,3/4, 1 ton in their counts...

So what the heck are you continuing this pointless argument for!?

Oh boy Lionel
Your a persistent one. But wrong again.

What the heck - go cry somewhere else & lick your wounds...

Update on '16 Baja500; unfortunately some lives were lost but some good news for Ford Raptor;

@Lionel

I was away doing something useful and missed your numerous comments about May sales.

In a capsule, you said that Ford is the top seller because GM counts all of their various brands together, and the rest of the world says, so what, Lionel.

GM still sold the most in May. And you say???

Exactly papa jim - so what!!

It always happens that when GM truck totals are revealed, the FORD fan girls go nuts, like that crazy girl friend. LMAO

Ford is already planning a new Bronco and Ranger in NA. The Global Ranger would be an excellent midsize truck--even the exterior would not need any changes. Below is a link from TTAC on a review of the Global Ranger.

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2016/06/ford-ranger-3-2-tdci-wildtrak-f-150-another-universe/#more-1353554

Where'd everybody go?

BOTTOM LINE IS:

Ford is #1 in full--size truck sales.

Toyota is #1 in mid--size truck sales.
