2017 Nissan Titan Half-Ton Videos
Posted by Mark Williams | August 16, 2016
We recently had the chance to spend enough time with the all-new 2017 Nissan Titan half-ton pickup to comprehensively test the new truck and produce videos detailing some of the more important aspects of the newest light duty.
We deliver our impressions on three different topics that are important for any pickup but especially for Nissan's direct competitors. The bonus video here (at the bottom) is on the two new versions of the regular cabs for both the regular Titan and heavier-duty Titan XD.

"not that there is anything wrong with that.....but we were hoping for something a little bit more."
Everybody likes more.
Well, looks to me that the Titan will help with Toyota's truck assembly capacity problem by further reducing demand for the Tundra.
Ford and the rest of the half ton segment cannot be happy with this new player arriving in showrooms just in time to louse up their plans for the remainder of 2016.
Surely RAM and the Tundra are most vulnerable to an updated Titan, but Ford and GM cannot be happy either.
Even though Honda does not make a half ton truck yet, the Titan's update can't help but take some of the shine off of the Ridgeline this fall.
The F-150 is outselling the Titan 60:1. The GM trucks are in that ballpark too. I don't think any competitor cares that Nissan has a new truck. They probably haven't even noticed.
Nissan accidentally mixed the worst of both worlds... the low payloads and towing of a 1/2 ton with the miserable curb weight, price, and low MPGs of a 1 ton. The truck has an "identity crisis".
If they had brains between their ears, they'd focus their efforts on the Frontier instead. Give us a great Frontier with a diesel option that doesn't cost $40 grand and then they'll have a hot seller.
The only chance this truck has is to compete on quality (something that the big 3 know nothing about). Neither Toyota or Nissan want or need to be the sales volume leaders. They make good enough margins on the pick-ups they sell. My local Toyota dealers moves Tundra's as fast as he gets them.
If they focus on quality they will do well...they can leave the fleet sales to the others.
@papa jim, I'm switching to the Nissan Titan because it has the BEST warranty in the business! Ram, Toyota, Ford and GM cannot compete with this warranty!
Which would you rather have a 2017 Silverado with built in bumper steps and a 36k mile warranty, or Nissan Titan with a swing out bumper step that backs 100,000.00 miles or 5 years!
Unbeatable coverage. Unbeatable value. Nissan Titan. America's best truck!
@Nissan Rob
I'm not big on warranties. To me they are a promise to do something later. Just like a handshake, a warranty is only as solid as the man behind it.
My own experience with Nissan is good, by the way, but if I'm shopping for a new pickup, I'm comparing features and price. Don't care about bling, or what color the paint is.
Make mine a V8, 2wd, spray in liner. I'm not hard to please.
Nissan Rob,
I think yourself and many others will be swayed by the massively extended warranty. I wonder if this will force the other pickup manufacturers to follow?
The 5.6 looks like it has the goods to move the pickup along quite nicely as well. If someone wants to tow a relatively large trailer the XD has it over the half ton pickups by a long shot.
I think once Nissan starts to put out more models the Titan number will improve. Especially with the 5.6 V8. I'd say it will be the best in the business, especially with the 7 speed.
The Titan will not sell as many Titans as Ram, but it will take enough sales away from the other manufacturers to give them a wake up call.
Nissan is moving in the correct direction with the Titan using more or less proven technology, building out of steel and why not? Aluminum?? So what? Does it make for a better pickup.
papajim,
If you experience is good with Nissan, then why the negatively biased statement regarding Nissan's long warranty??
Wouldn't this long warranty and your view that Nissan are good sway you into buying a Titan?
If not, then you are talking pure nonsense. You have been called out.
papajim,
Good job Nissan! Best towing and best fuel economy just like Big Al said!
I'll also add that Nissan did state in one of it's Titan press releases that the Titan lineup will be attractive to 85% of potential pickup buyers from the now 35% with the old Titan.
This alone indicates that the new Titan will be more popular than the older Titan.
Nissan also stated they are considering or have already decided to change one of their plants to have the capacity for 150 000 Titans a year.

Bring on the halftons!
Sales will indeed improve when Nissan puts out more models.
I can see Nissan selling quite a few of these halftons. Take one for a drive and then make a comparison.
Nissan changed one of their plants to have the capacity for 150 000 Titans a year!
The Titan doesn't have an identity crisis. This is a 1/2 ton, period. The XD is the step up, which for the slight cost over the 1/2 many may just do that. Not everyone needs 900 ft lb torque. If you routinely haul at the upper end of a 1/2 tons limit or looking at a gas 3/4, then the XD should also be on your list to look at. If you dont get it then the XD was clearly not built for you. I caution throwing the word NEVER around effortlessly. The domestics once dominated car sales in this country. If there not careful they may end up saying the same about pickups.
Rick,
Excellent post.
Have a nice day.
Nissan sells a lot of fleet vehicles
From NY taxi cabs to delivery vans
and now it seems single cab pickups will also be available
I wish PUTC would show us in detail the 4x4 system or I will have to find out myself with a test ride.
I can't stand the L-O-N-G delay when I switch in 4x4 on my F-150. Chevy-Ram and Toyota doesn't have a long delay
I think Gregory is right. We just wanted more and not that we might not still get more but its looking less and less likely for sure as time goes on and curtain gets pulled farther back on the entire Titan chapter 2 adventure. So waiting on the V6 version now... Hoping it brings more than just par for the course. Its just a decent alternative for those willing to open their eyes. No class leader or pioneer. With additional refinements and innovations and time and marketing it may make gradual headway but its a long slow road but the Foreign competition does long term planning much better than the big 3 minus 1.
Clit incorrectly implies that Fiat is the the reason for the "3 minus 1". Had he pass grade 2 math he would know that it should be 3 minus 3.

Excellent post.
Really lives in his own false reality...
Ford is American owned and has never been bailed out.
GM did go bankrupt, defaulted on its debts/obligations and took taxpayer money to survive.
Chrysler died in the 90s when it was bought out by Mercedes and hasn't been American owned since and has been traded/sold until given away to a list of other foreign owners until it officially had 0 value when given to Fiat by the US government. The only US taxpayer funded foreign take over of an already foreign owned company.
All (Ford GM and Fiat) are global companies with production around the globe. Chrysler, Ram and Dodge are not just small often in trouble divisions of Fiat. Ford and GM are not controlled by outside entities.
So in math you can understand its the Former big 3 or the big 3 MINUS 1... It just makes sense if you are being honest and real about it. Sorry you cant handle the reality. It Doesn't mean you cant like a former member of the big 3 that hasn't been able to stand on its own without foreign control (and hence NOT American) for the last 20 years.
Owning production outside the US doesn't make you foreign. It makes you GLOBAL, competitive and shows expansion. 3 things Chrysler never was even when it was in the big 3 and relies on foreign control to attempt to do/be.
Nissan's warranty is great marketing. It certaily steadys the nerves of buyers contemplating venturing into unknown waters.
GM had used the same gamble to attract buyers who had diminished confidence in brands whos quality had diminished. This strategy was sucessful, but had to be discontinued as it was costing a fortune in claims. Lipstick on a pig.
Nissans previous generation Titan was not a bad truck, simply not a great one. This new generation will certainly be better and is bound to gain conquests from the increasing Shaky Chevy crowd.
FXDX1450, is right why try and put "lipstick on a pig". Do what Ford does, assume your product is a pig and don't pay for the extended warranty.
I mean why should the manufacturers pay when the Ford customers will pay. Good work Ford!

I think if Mark put as much heart and effort into articles for other makes as he does with Ford, this site would be better.
I need a truck the size of my old 1974 Datsun. It would carry my tree stands and other hunting and fishing stuff just fine
I think if other makers would put as much heart and effort into their trucks as For does, the articles on this site for the other trucks would be better.

Good point Scott, everything other than Ford is just mediocre at best.
No Chevy Silverado HD Alaskan Edition Package story yet? Been 3 days, I know its nothing crazy but its some new news.

Good point Nitro Ford has a long way to go before they could hope to even reach a mediocre status. For now we'll just call them junk.
"Caught"
"Fiat is not on of those companies..."
Posted by: TOM | Aug 18, 2016 3:40:28 PM
You are right Tom, Fiat is not "on" of those....Ford is "on" of those, keeping customers safe:
Let's look back....
Introduced for 1971, the FORD Pinto was designed to take on the rising tide of imports that had come to dominate the entry-level market. In a rear-end collision, the fuel filler neck could separate and puncture the fuel tank, spraying fuel into the passenger compartment and igniting. In an exposé in Mother Jones in 1977, it was revealed that Ford had known about the defect before the car even went to production, but decided it would be too expensive to fix — the cost to safely upgrade the fuel system would’ve added $11 to the cost of each car. A shield to protect the tank from rupturing would have only cost $1.
Ford keeping their customers happy and safe....
On the ropes after paying out millions to victims of the Pinto debacle, Ford faced another disastrous recall in 1980 after the NHTSA announced after a three-year investigation it found that Ford automatic transmissions built between 1966 and 1980 contained a defect where they could slip from park into reverse, causing them to roll unexpectedly....lol
After reports by Mother Jones and the Detroit Free Press, it came out that the company had known about the defect since at least 1972, and rejected a design improvement that would have cost $0.03 per car to fix the issue. Instead, the company chose to quietly pay $20 million to victims and their families. After finding that the defect was the cause of 777 accidents, including 259 injuries and 23 deaths, the NHTSA was on the verge of issuing a 23-million-car recall — a move that would have likely bankrupted Ford. In 1981, company executives pleaded poverty to the Reagan administration, and a compromise was struck: The company would mail out 23 million stickers to Ford owners to put on their dashboards, reminding them to “make sure the gear selector lever is fully engaged in Park,” and to “fully engage the parking brake” before turning the car off.
Ford keeping their customers happy and safe....with a sticker!
How about this oldie but goodoe! In 1990, when Ford released its all-new Exploder. The Ford-Firestone rollover scandal of 2000 didn’t stop the popularity of the SUV, but it set off a nationwide panic and drove home just how prone to rollovers the high-riding trucks really were.
The Explorer was introduced to replace the dangerously rollover-prone Bronco II in 1990 (heeeheeee). For tires, Ford partnered with Firestone, which had been its preferred tire supplier for nearly 100 years. But when the NHTSA asked both Ford and Firestone to investigate a high rate of blowouts that led to rollovers, Ford blamed Firestone, and Firestone blamed Ford.
Faced with the responsibility of up to 100 deaths worldwide, the tire company initially recalled 6.5 million tires, blaming heat, low tire pressure, and the Exploder’s weight and handling characteristics for the accidents. Ford followed suit a few months later, recalling an additional 13 million tires, with Ford CEO Jaques Nasser declaring, “We simply do not have enough confidence in the future performance of these tires keeping our customers safe.”
Ford keeping their customers happy and safe!
More recently Ford keeping their customers happy and safe, by having Ford Expolder occupants smelling exhaust odors in the occupant compartment, exposing them to carbon monoxide....and the beat goes on.
How about the 2011-2012 Ford F-150 and the 2012 Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator with the transmission output speed sensor that causes the transmission to force a downshift into first gear. If that happens at the wrong time, it might cause the vehicle's rear tires to slide or lock up as it drops its speed.
Ford keeping their customers happy and safe!
Tom, Tom Tom if you are going to be two faced, at least make one of them pretty.
"30 year"
Just saw my first TV commercial highlighting the Nissan Titan XD. It shows the Cummins engine and it states that it can tow more than 12,000 lbs. Good commercial and it aired while I was watching the olympics. Ford won't sell any more 1/2 tons with the HD towing package now the whole world knows about the Titan XD.
Nissan is smart by offering the XD, when the cafe stanards go into effect and no 1/2 can meet them, Nissan will have the XD which is exempt but retains a lot of the 1/2 ton ride size.

If you understand the standards, it is not a problem. When the 30 MPG CAFE standard goes into effect in 2025, this is only 23 MPG on the window sticker.
They're already at 22+ right now.
The EPA also wants to add CAFE standards to HD trucks like the XD so Nissan will not be exempt. On the other hand, CAFE standards can be abolished and should be and if they are they would be abolished for all trucks.
Nissan now has 2 1/2 tons one is smack dab in the heart of the segment the other sits on top of the segment the heaviest 1/2 ton ever devised
GM trucks have the wobbles
Ford trucks have bad engines
Toyota doesn't even use high strength steel and rely on BS to sell to their fan base.
Rams fall apart
Nissan 5 years 100,000 mi no nonsense warranty bumper to bumper.
Nissan is making a big move with their Titan on many fronts.
Gm sold contender but the wobbles
Aluminum has a part to play in the construction of trucks sadly it is not useful to make the entire truck body out of aluminum
This is something Ford has not learned yet.
The isolation of road noise is a good thing however when poorly executed you end up with the GM wobbles .
High strength steel is a whole lot more stiffer and durable
than remelted scrap steel , Something that keeps Toyota trucks in the shadows.
Those that have not improved reliability by now deserve to be bankrupted repeatedly and sold off to Fiat. poor judgement and greed Ram has not learned it's lesson.
Nissan is making the necessary moves to balance it's proportion of truck sales .
It took Nissan and Toyota some 30 years to crack open the car market in USA and will take at least that many years to crack open the 1/2 ton Truck market in USA .
Meanwhile Nissan will sell very good trucks with more and more fans with each iteration of the Titan.
Time waits for no man
Yeah, a 5 year Nissan warranty is like a 2 month GMC warranty. No longer a fan, Nissan. No longer a fan. Probably have to sell most of these in Serbia.
