December 2016 Pickup Sales Breakdown
The 2016 year-end sales numbers ticked off just ahead of the record year we had in 2015, recording 17.5 million sales. And slightly more than 15 percent of that was mid-size, half-ton and heavy-duty pickup truck sales. In fact, when comparing the total mid-size pickup sales from 2015, 2016 was up 26 percent (448,398 versus 357,406), though much of that has to do with the fact that the top-selling Toyota Tacoma has been significantly upgraded, the GM twins now have a diesel engine and the all-new Honda Ridgeline has re-entered the marketplace.
The full-size segment is also up but, as you might expect, by a smaller amount (2,244,142 versus 2,187,173, or not quite 3 percent). Of course, the big news in this segment was the all-new Ford Super Duty, but Nissan also made a big splash with its all-new half-ton Titan.
Overall, total sales for all pickup trucks were up in 2016 by almost 6 percent over 2015 (2,692,540 versus 2,544,579), with a strong first quarter predicted by some as we move into 2017. However, we'll have to wait and see what the full year will hold, as many believe auto sales have peaked and we're likely to see a slow decline in the market for several years. Still, year-end December sales were strong and only Chevrolet's Silverado, GMC's Sierra and Toyota's Tundra finished 2016 worse off than they did in 2015. Here's how each of the pickup truck players and manufacturers finished the month and year.

You gotta love the final slide--GM sold more trucks than Ford by a huge margin.
Mid size sales up 26 percent over 2015. GM clearly did their research and got back into the market at the ideal time. The current midsize offerings own and will lock it up before FORD gets to market with their Ranger.

Agreed, the last graph represents the bottom line, the one that counts. HAHA!
I'm STILL waiting for the XD to be available in King Cab Pro4X,
w/8 foot bed, roof clearance lights and a sun roof....
I live on Long Island and in the 2 years that these trucks
have been on the market, I have not seen 1-not 1 on the
road. It's like Nissan is hiding them from public view.
Their total year to date sales numbers are pathetic for a truck
that has it's potential.
The marketing folks at Nissan are clearly not on the same page
as the rest of the company. I would love to see this vehicle
succeed but it has a boat anchor around it's bumper and thats
a shame...
@GMSRGREAT
Funny too, how the Ford guys whined in 2015 that their plants weren't running at full production. They said that's the reason they didnt' beat GM's numbers.
In 2016 they did "so well" that the dealers don't have room on the lots for all of the unsold inventory, so...they have to shut down plants until the ....market makes an adjustment.
You don't know whether to laugh or cry, do you?
@papa and GMS, so when you say they GM, sold more, do you mean as a manufacture? just wanted to clarify that, so that means all the little cross over trucks included are needed to beat Ford....on the brand front, 1 brand of truck matters, thats F series, one good thing for GM is now they wont be bale to sell out to Mexico, and will have to keep jobs here in the US
@papajim Congrats it takes,Silverado 1500-3500,Sierra 1500-3500,Canyon and Colorado to outsell F-150-F-550
Yep, nothing new; Ford F-series outran shaky GOVT motor's 2 x brands of full size trucks by over 24 000 units...ouch :-))...
With shaky GM having nothing new to offer in 2017 - I predict Ford will only increase their lead even further this year...the best never rests for 41 years...keep following the leader :-)))
@Nitro @Danny
Ford sold about 800k trucks in 2016, but so many of them are now languishing on dealer lots that Ford had to close plants over it.
GM sold a total of just under 1 million trucks, based on the figures in this PUTC story today. GM's total damn near doubled the number of RAM trucks, and it is apprx equal to the combined sales of Nissan, Toyota and Honda times 2.
Ouch. It hurts to be competing with GM.
Like a Rock!!!
All you GM shills have to add FOUR DIFFERENT TRUCK LINES to Ford's ONE in order to beat it.
Hate to tell you, when you compare FULL SIZE trucks, Ford wins, handily.
Additionally, GM truck sales were DOWN for the year, even with the refresh. Ford's were UP.
Man, defeat must be a bitter pill to swallow.
lray801 So you are saying Ford couldn't even out sell GM with a good year for Ford, and down year for GM.
I take it back, Ford Clowns not even next year looks good for you. Enjoy being second place next year to Ford clowns HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
All good information. It's obvious that GM did and should sell the most trucks. They sell Silverado,Silverado HD, Colorado, Sierra, Sierra HD, and Canyon. As a company GM has a good truck portfolio as terms of variety.
Ford has F150 and Superduty. If GM can't outsell Ford with 6 models compared to Fords 2, that would be sad.
I like all of the charts myself. To fet the best comparison, apples to apples, I like to look at model to model.
Way to go GM.
Killing the competition in sales. Some Ford fans just can't accept it. Here we go again with the brand this / brand that crap!!!
This is not boxes of cereal guys. LOL
@Corey
did you just stand on your head (rhetorically speaking) to avoid saying that GM led the whole field in sales last year?
Maybe there's a reason why Ford's stock has looked like crap the last 2 years and GM's is up sharply over the last 12 mos.
Just sayin'

It took Ford Motor Company a multi-billion dollar complete redesign of their F-150 plus a massive marketing blitz just to try to hold on to 2nd place in truck sales against General Motor's slightly facelifted K2 trucks (and the K2 is really a lightly updated GMT900) and its little midsize brother.
In the end, FoMoCo STILL had to load up on fleet sales the first half of the year to drive down inventory and put $10,000 on the hood the 2nd half of the year. Ford is so desperate to hold on to that cheesy marketing line that they took a massive profit cut to do it. It's no wonder they're already updating the F-150's front grille, sales aren't what they had hoped and they're desperate to avoid having to idle their new expensive truck plants like they did last year.
Brand for Brand, Ford & Toyota.
GM is just McDonalds. Overselling Junk!!!
Lets recap:
Ford F-Series outsells Silverado and GMC Combined
Toyota Tacoma outsells Colorado and Canyon
Toyota and Ford are the only real winners here Period!!!

Your Logic is flawed on so many levels, it's funny watching all GM fanbi comments. Hilarious.
Thanks for the Laugh!!
What an epic failure on the Nissan Titan. Has anyone lost their job for that insanely priced turd? Oh and Honda.. I won't even say it. I just hope the epic fail on the Titan doesn't cause a delay or cancel on the highly anticipated new Frontier with a baby cummins in it.
@PapaJim
its all in the way you want to look at it. I appreciate your input.
I would like to see a further breakdown to the specific models, i.e. half ton.
The charts are great and it's interesting how the information can be combined to fuel everyone's arguments.
I wish everyone could be open minded rather than brand loyal.
If I couldn't afford a Sierra, I would buy a Ford too. UH no I wouldn't.

Frank, please explain the different levels of the flaws you are referring to. I am up for a good laugh right about now.
GM builds trucks, Ford builds trucks. GM sells more trucks.
Any questions?
@GMNOTSOGREAT/ Wishing it were.
I do have a question - Has the Chevy Shake issue been solved, is there a solution? If not the further market share erosion of full size shakrolets is certain to continue.
A no spin/ no diversion answer will be in order.
@FXDX1450
Chevy shake?
GM sold almost two million trucks in the last couple of years and I've yet to speak with a single Chevy or GMC owner who's complained about their truck.
How many do you know personally who had those troubles?
Midsize is 16.6% of total market (448k/2692k). Not that big, but if it continues to grow at 26% that will be a big deal.

And the rest of story :
GM sells way more trucks than Ford .
Here's an observation. Does anyone else ever notice how the fans of GM trucks brag about the fact that GM Trucks out sells Ford Trucks but yet when was the last time you saw a commercial from GM bragging about the fact that they out sell Ford Trucks? the only GM commercials you ever see from GM is making fun of Fords. And that's because GM knows the truth. Also if you think about it in years past when the GM twins outsold the F series fans would be bragging about the fact that they outsold Ford but yet you never saw a commercial on TV about GM outselling Ford. That's because GM treats Chevy and GMC like two separate companies. And I'm a Ford fan and I don't care if Ford only sold 50000 trucks a year I would still buy one. I don't care how many they sell. I like them because I have had good luck with them and I grew up with them and my family. And yes I've owned GM trucks and cars before and I've always had bad luck with them. So in conclusion congratulations to all the manufacturers on their sales and if you like Ford great if you don't that's great too. And I'm sure for Ford and GM aren't crying over the fact that you don't like them I'm sure they'll still be here next year. 😀
And that's how I explain why ford sales more trucks than gover motors.
@papajim - guess you don't get out much, if you are not hearing about all that shakin going on.
Thank you for being GMNOTSOGREAT's surrogate. Maybe you is he or maybe he is you, who knows.
Wasn't really a real answer to the real question , sidesteppin the issue seems to the answer to declining market share in full size.
@FXDX1450 : I have a Silverado and it doesn't shake. I know several people who have a new gm full size twin. Same result, no shaking. Whenever , I get an opportunity to speak with owners of other gm twins i am sure to ask them how they like their truck and the responses are : I love it, it' great, really quiet to drive, great on fuel. Now, has Ford corrected the death wobble of the Superduty yet?
@FXDX1450 : Did it ever occur to you that the GM mid size twins may have stolen sales of the full size twins? What ever you believe the bottom line is 120,000 plus more sales made by GM in the light truck market.
@GMNOTSOGREAT I have a SuperDuty and it doesn't death wobble. I know several people who have a new SuperDuty. Same result, no wobble. Whenever , I get an opportunity to speak with owners of other SuperDuty I am sure to ask them how they like their truck and the responses are : I love it, it' great, really quiet to drive, great on fuel. "Did it ever occur to you that the GM mid size twins may have stolen sales of the full size twins? What ever you believe the bottom line is 120,000 plus more sales made by GM in the light truck market".
Why yes it did, how refreshing to hear it from those that have consistently denied it. The bigger question is why the stolen from full size... wait for it... The Shaking!!! That's why.
F series is the bestselling truck in America 40 years running... Doesn't appear to be changing and Fiat is close to catching chevy in fuill size sales.
Why can't everybody just be like "yay for the USA" or something like that? Instead, people gotta turn it into a bashing site. oh, Yay for the USA!! We do make some awesome trucks, no matter the brand.
As I have stated many times before, as Colorado sales go up, Silverado sales go down PROVING grand pa Joe is trading in his big truck for something he can handle!
Good job Toyota Tacoma!
I own a 2010 and 2016 and both are solid trucks!

Applying that methodology to FORD would explain their prepping of the up coming Ranger to address the ...... wait for it......Ford death wobble syndrome. Bam!
Good job Toyota Tacoma! I own a 2010 and 2016 and both are solid trucks!
@oxi
The Tacoma's hold their value really well. They're great off-road. Great legacy of reliability.
Now the bad news. If you are taller than 5'10" and older than 45 getting in and out of the drivers seat makes you look like some kind of Harry Houdini.
Wasn't really a real answer to the real question , sidesteppin the issue seems to the answer to declining market share in full size.

What was Ford's excuse for 2013-2015 where its market share fell from 39.9% to 35.7%. This year Ford might of stopped the bleeding but look at the big drop in profits OUCH.

Why are the Chevy and GMC guys so stressed out over the FACT that F series is #1 in sales for 40 years? why is it so hard to understand that GM is NOT a truck brand, why is it so hard to understand that Toyota sells more mid sized than chevy and GMC? Why is it so hard to understand?
"Why are the Chevy and GMC guys so stressed out over the FACT that F series is #1 in sales for 40 years??
We're far from stressed out, because we know our Company is #1 at the end of the day, has been since the 1930s.
"Why is it so hard to understand?"
I don't know, why can't you Ford clowns understand simple things?
SALES RACE
Chevrolet has won the light-vehicle sales race 52 times; Ford, 41 times; and Toyota, twice.
http://www.autonews.com/article/20111031/CHEVY100/310319973/chevy-and-ford-have-waged-a-sales-battle-for-a-century
Chevy still has Ford beat just as a brand, GM as a Company has clobber Ford Company every year since 1930s. If you Ford clowns ever get to 52 then me might care a little. Till then enjoy second place. :)
@johnny doe, again why is it so hard to understand? Who is number 1 brand 40 years and running in full size trucks? Why is it so hard to understand? You are really having to dig arent you? why is it so hard to understand?
Look out Chevrolet Silverado!! Your sales continue to decline while Ram's increases. Ram is likely to push you down to #3 in 2017. Maybe your GM could figure out another model or two to try to keep those sales up there.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahah

How many models of the F-150 are there? Then multiple that by lets see 250, 350,450,550,650,750 etc,etc,etc. Multiply by 10. And you get 50 different model of f-series.
I want to know who sold the most full size pick up trucks with a factory installed bed. don't think many 450's and 550's come with a bed, that would be a neat sales break down to see complete pick up truck vs. chassis cab trucks. Would also like to see sales broken down by each class. I don't think Ford sells as many f150's as the commercials suggest.
They don't. That's why Ford likes to play games by using the phrase "best-selling truck for xx years" and shows a picture of an F-150. Yet they claim they are only referring to the whole line of trucks as a singular "truck". It's a sleazy marketing trick.
If the F-150 was the best selling half-ton, believe me, Ford's billion dollar propaganda machine would have hundreds of commercials with that annoying Denis Leary on youtube and TV telling you about it. I'll be interested in how Ford tries to explain why they're rolling Ranger into their F-series sales numbers despite not being an F-series truck. Counting van sales as truck sales was bad enough.
GM series best selling line of trucks in America.
