Best-Selling Pickup Trucks: February 2017

2017-Super-Duty-F-350A_F-150 - Copy

After the predicted slowdown in automotive sales in January in just about every vehicle segment, pickup truck sales seemed to rebound in February. Almost every pickup sold in the U.S. had a strong month. The only significant exceptions were the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tundra, both of which are long overdue for a redesign.

GM's Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra saw double-digit jumps compared to February 2016 sales numbers. We're guessing some of that gain can be attributed to the numerous dealer discounts offered on certain models of both pickups. Bloomberg is reporting that Chevy is now leading all truckmakers when it comes to offering cash on the hood. Take note: There are good deals to be had.

The mid-size players saw strong gains in February as well, with GM's Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon posting strong numbers. Tacoma sales appear to be staying level so far in 2017 as Toyota continues to work on getting the proper production mix between its two trucks at its San Antonio facility. It's also worth noting that Honda is selling more well-equipped mid-size Ridgelines than Nissan is selling of its two full-size pickups, the Titan half ton and heavier-duty Titan XD.

We expect these positive numbers to continue to climb as more of the country thaws out in March and April, and more fleet buyers and families take a trip to local dealerships.

"You make this too complicated."

You wish. It's not that simple. I know you wish it was, but it is not.

"Total-up the numbers of trucks sold. GM has outsold Ford by a big margin the last 2 years."

No, they haven't. F-Series outsold Silverado + Sierra combined 4 out of the last 5 years.

I know you want to add in Colorado but you also have to add in Ford Transit if you do that. Because GM got of new vans to sell the Colorado which is still being beaten badly by Tacoma.

"Ford R&D has made significant miscalculations in the truck market during the last ten years. New leadership is required at Ford."

Yeah, Ford has just been outselling GM almost every year for the last 10 and Ford needs new leadership. You sound like Obama. If you like you Silverado, you can keep your Silverado.

"Look at the percentage growth that RAM has delivered during the same period, compared to Ford."

Yes, lets look at it shall we. Ram grew 36% in that time. Ford grew 18%. It's harder to gain growth well you already sell so many trucks. Not to take away from Ram but its easier to grow when you have less sales and need to work your way up. But look at GM, Silverado and Sierra lost 8% in that time period. Looks like GM has the growth problem.

Educate yourself because you don't know what you're talking about.

Gmsrgreat you are clearly misinformed. GM does not have 2 different body style full size trucks. They have 4. 1500 and HD are 2 different sheet metal designs.

Sorry sir, but you need to become more accurate in your commenting. The 1500 and HD bodies come from the same stamping dies with the exception of the hood. However, now that I think of it, that may not be different anymore. Some how I think you are proponent of fake news.

I have always been a GM buyer. With that being said I find the comment section to be quite amusing. The fact is that Ford, GM and Ram all build quality trucks. ( I purposely avoid including the foreign foreign manufacturers in this discussion because I believe strongly in buying domestic, not because the foreign manufacturers don't build quality vehicles.) I don't feel the need to blather about the competition building junk; I just have my personal preference, as do we all. Our economy's well being is vital to all three domestic manufacturers succeeding. God bless theUSA.

Hmmm, can you post a link to a 1500 dually, or a 1500 with an HD bed. Have you looked at the part numbers between a 1500 fender vs a 2500 HD fender? I think you are the fake news.

What I learn from this is the time to buy a truck is the month following really poor sales. GM had a terrible month and then kicked in the incentives hard. That's definitely a good thing to remember for patient shoppers.

The actual reason GM gave me for having different truck lines is so single brand Cadillac dealers don’t have to carry Chevy trucks. I fought to get one truck or the other killed for 15 years, all to no avail. Now, with another bankruptcy behind them and Ford beating or almost beating them with 1 brand, there is less reason than ever to carry both names. I would dump Chevy and make GMC the only truck brand and make it into a division unto itself.

@papajim, Some of your points I tend to agree with, but the market and the world has changed since your days selling cars. GM is not the big dog anymore and it is a luxury to carry two and two truck lines that are so closely related. All the differences relate to cosmetics. Trucks should be viewed from a function standpoint first. The GMC line and the Chevy line are functionally identical. The Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade are prime examples of waste and what got GM into bankruptcy.

Remember, guys gMSrbad and dad, papa, seem to think GM is a brand of truck, so when I go to a GM dealer what truck exactly I am looking for in a GM truck? A GM silverado? No that would be a Chevy(number 2 on the sales list behind Ford), how about a GM sierra? No that would be a GMC Sierra, a distant 4th from Ford and a twin to the chevy, now if we combine all 500 trucks under the GM as a manufacture, you then can say number 1. how you guys are proud of all those combined vehicles in order to say you are number 1 I'll never know....I'd be embarrassed, which explains why you have to defend all the time.

Toyota really should update the Tundra a bit.. I love the truck currently as it is now but the sales are slumpin'.

Hmmm, can you post a link to a F-350 dually . Have you looked at the part numbers between a F-150 fender vs a F-250 HD fender? Sounds very expensive to me. You see how you are losing your earlier arguments about costs. You're only digging a deeper hole.

@Don Webb

Do some reading, Don!

GM's financial troubles were the direct result of extravagant labor deals that management at GM made with the UAW back in the 1980s.

GM's strategy of consolidating its popular brands down to GMC, Chevy Buick and Cadillac has been extremely effective. It was painful for a couple of years, but it's been shown to be the smart path.

Please cite a single example of a major consultant or bank that recommends merging GMC and Chevy for the purpose of whatever small efficiencies would be gained in the process. You cannot.

GM, the Automotive Industry Joke of Company.

Have a Nice day GM Cheer Squad.

I agree with papajim.

Visit TFL Truck and it will show you REAL TRUCK numbers and who is the REAL LEADER. PERIOD!!

Congrats Ford, GM and RAM, team America! Also Toyota, Nissan and Honda as well. Team Pickup!

Its great to see pickup sales are in a relatively good state of health.

GM pickups seems to be king, irrespective of how they are sold.

The Honda seems to be picking up steam.

The Nissan Titan appears to be increasing as well. Nissan unlike the other brands will slowly increase over a longer period as pickup customers slowly realise it isn't a bad pickup.

The Frontier is in desperate need of a replacemen. Well before Ford releases the Ranger.

Ford will be in a permanent number 2 position for a while yet. Ford need to offer their pickups at a more competitive price point for this to occur. But Ford is hamstrung by the massive cost and investment in aluminum and engine development costs associated with massive conversion costs in manufacturing plants. The bank still wants its money back from the new F Series.

@BAFO,
I'd like to know when these Nissan sales are supposed to come in. 3 years in and Titan sales are still less than 3k per month.

They originally said sales had to be 14k for the minimum basis for the investment and over that was the goal.

And they won't ever improve to where they needed them to go. They'll go up a little bit by bit and then go back down never reaching their minimum investment goal.

Nissan Titan is a disaster.

Ford's sales are the best since 2004. And 2005 was one of their biggest years. Educate yourself.

To those of you who think f-150's do not go into rental fleets our local Enterprise here in Indiana took delivery of 15 in mid February.

According to information easily gleaned on the net VW, Toyota, Ford, GM, etc are the biggest brands. No mention of .......... what's that "non company" ......... oh, Buick.

@Big Al

GM is not a brand, it is the parent of a number of global brands. Smarten up

We really expect more from you than this.

WTF!!!

GM was first and sold the most pickups this month. Ford was second place. Period.

@sierra, glad you are proud of how many of those trucks you need to compete with Ford, classic GMS post

Yeah 1998 called and said Ford wake up.

Ford is pure junk to me. Own two one 4.6Lv6 and 5.4L v8. Will not waste my money on more of them junkers. My dad's 2013 5.0L STX just help back my thinking! Leaking head gasket at almost 100,000 miles. MY 2014 first year Chevy had less dealer visits then just one of my F150s, even with all the recalls. Money in my pocket and I love it!

@ ex-Big Al; don't worry about Ford, their aluminum investment will pay off handsomely and ahead of the pack playing catch up & will all eventually follow Ford's footsteps...for 41 yrs, keep following the leader :-))

Titan is a major fail

Like when you need a 200 buck tool to change spark plug or heli coil when they shot out of the head?

Interested to see how this will affect Feb sales but for sure if will be another Ford sweeping win; one brand truck trumping shaky GOVT motors 2 brands with 2 trucks each strategy...now that's IMPRESSIVE!...HELL YEAH!!!!

Posted by: Lionel | Feb 27, 2017 6:49:22 PM

It's so funny how the FORD guys thought they were gonna have another month like January. Then reality hit them smack in the face after GM dropped the hammer on Ford. Ford relegated to second place to in sales.....Again!

Ford is and always will be 2nd place. Nothing but trash.

It's so funny how the FORD guys thought they were gonna have another month like January

Best part when feb number came out GM smoked em by over 10,000 units. and they cheering bout 200 units in jan hahahahaha!

Wow, lot of GM haters on here. Anyways, this article states GM's average transaction price vs incentives is still pretty good, even with the cash in hoods of trucks.

http://gmauthority.com/blog/2017/03/general-motors-february-2017-sales-figures-numbers-results-united-states/#ixzz4a8e1Nxei

Three years of J.D. Power PIN data shows that GM has led the industry in ATPs in 35 of 36 months through February

GM was the only domestic automaker and one of only two full-line automakers to reduce incentives as a percentage of ATP, with spending decreased 0.3 points to 12.7 percent, while the industry average was 12.3 percent, up 1.3 points.

Sound bout right Ford aint even posted 4qr profits yet. Penny picking at its best haha!

Johnny
I think it was Detroit Free Press where I read that after a 800 m 4th qt. loss Ford showed 4.6 B profit for 2016.

I don't understand??
Why is everybody picking the Silverado over the Ram?
The Ram has a much better ride and roomy interior and 10 times the power with the 5.7 HEMI
Did anybody see the 0 to 60 times?
RAM BEATS EVERYBODY ON 0 TO 60 !
The strong sound of that HEMI engine makes people notice!

Management is checking under chairs and down between cushions for any coin to help the bottom line.

GM needs to stop with all the winning, and you people need to stop with all the whining!
And for (What?) the 8th year now the Duramax is King of the IKE!

@ Nitro: I never knock Toyota. I have too much respect for their products. Ford, however, that's a totally different story.

Great post hdmax: GM wins again, no suprise there. But lets be honest, FORD wins with marketing hype, just ask them. All that really matters to the Ford fans is Ford telling their base they are #1.

The chevy can win all the races in the world, it will never sell the most like the most wanted to truck on the mkt.

It can get you from point A to point B, but for how long.

Have fun GM Cheer Squad.

This might be a dumb question..How are these sales measured? Is it sales from the manufacturer to the dealers or is it dealer sales?

@Denny Matzinger--Completely agree and thank you for your comment. We have many on this site who might or might not be physically adults but act like children. It doesn't really matter what brand you buy they are all good choices. Buy what you like. As for manufacturers does anyone on this site wish for the demise of a particular vehicle manufacturer? Does anyone honestly believe that the workers making one brand are any better than those of the competition? To Ford fan boys do you really want GM or FCA to go away? Do you honestly believe that Ford would then be the only manufacturer? Have any of you ever heard of the South Korean or Chinese manufacturers? If GM and FCA went away there would be other manufacturers that would fill the void and they would not just be Ford (ever hear of Great Wall of China? and I am not talking about the actual wall). You might just get your wish but then the rest of us could pay for this with displaced workers which we would end up paying for in higher taxes. Nothing wrong with competition. Here's wishing for continued growth for Ford, GM, FCA, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda and for full employment.

All the GM and Ford fans posting how which would sold more truck is so funny.Because they think that which everone sales more trucks it must mean that that it is the best truck.
But that like saying since McDonald's sells more hamburgers then anyone else That must mean it has the best Hamburgers
And we all know that's not true just like GM or Ford truck are not the best trucks on the road. Maybe the side of the road lol

Steve I bet McDonald's has the best hamburger for a buck though.

Maybe start referring to the gmtk2xx platform and faeries platform. Does that help this disagreement?

BOTTOM LINE: GM TRUCKS ARE THE BEST.

I know you want to add in Colorado but you also have to add in Ford Transit if you do that.

@Jackie

So you want to include vans? The Colorado is a pickup. This website is devoted to pickups. Who needs educating here?

@Jack: I parked my 2015 chevy 1500 beside a 2500 HD silverado yesterday and they were exact duplicates of the body panels. No need to check the part #'s. However, the grille and front bumper were different. If you still don't believe, go to your local GM dealer and check it out for yourself.

Wow, lot of GM haters on here. Anyways, this article states GM's average transaction price vs incentives is still pretty good, even with the cash in hoods of trucks.

Actually not a lot of Gm haters on here, just the usual few that post crap. Some use multiple names too...! It's sad.
