2015-2017 Ford Transit: Recall Alert

2016_Ford_Transit_F150

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 370,000 model-year 2015-17 Ford Transit full-size vans with medium, long and extended wheelbases, and chassis cab/cutaway vans with medium wheelbases built at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri between Jan. 17, 2014, and June 15, 2017

The Problem: The flexible driveshaft coupling could have a crack that could allow it to separate while driving or allow for unintended movement when in Park without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of injury or a crash. In addition, if the driveshaft separates from the transmission it can result in secondary damage to surrounding parts, including the brakes and fuel lines, also increasing the risk of injury or a crash. Ford is unaware of any injuries or crashes related to this issue.

The Fix: Based on field data, Ford said vans with less than 30,000 miles do not require immediate repair, nor do vans in which the coupling unit has already been replaced. Ford said that the flexible couplings should not deteriorate sufficiently to separate from the driveshaft until the vans have been driven 30,000 miles. Based on that, Ford is advising owners with vans that have less than 30,000 miles on the odometer to schedule an appointment for a replacement coupling when they near that number. Owners whose vans have 30,000 miles or more should contact their dealer for an immediate interim repair, which will be to have the flexible coupling replaced. Flexible couplings should be replaced every 30,000 miles until the permanent repair is available. The permanent repair will involve replacing the coupling with a redesigned flexible coupling with a modified driveshaft bracket or a revised driveshaft equipped with a universal joint. All repairs will be done free of charge.

What Owners Should Do: Ford did not immediately announce an owner identification schedule. Owners can call Ford at 800-392-3673, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.

Comments

@Big Al--My prior comment was blocked out but I agree that no manufacture wants to deliberately make a defective product and the suppliers need to make a profit as well. It is the action that the manufacturer takes to address quality issues and what the manufacture does to improve their quality standards.

@Big Al--I should just ignore papa jim's responses to me. Nothing can be gained by me from responding back. I don't completely disagree with his comment but as you stated he has a few holes in his arguments in that he does not see the whole picture. It is better to take corrective action than to assign blame and in this article Ford has taken the appropriate action to rectify this problem.

O now that's a bad one. Not GM ignition switch cover up murdering people bad or Fiat biggest truck buy back of all time bad or Pinto murder bad... but its big and serious enough to be bad and on a very successful vehicle.

@Big Al, not sure if you saw the news but Sertraline is now available in generic form and costs WAY less, so there is no reason why you can't be comfortable again. Fewer side effects than the alternative treatments. Check with your doctor.

Jeff S,
Reading papajum's comments makes me wonder what his issues are. He's more aggressive now than a year or two ago.

He's become quite obnoxious and belittles others. Maybe Mark Williams should "rest" him for a year. It's a pity because he does now and then put forward good opinions.

@Big Al

sorry but when I referred to improved availability of Sertraline and its generic cousins in my message yesterday I forget to mention that there are some concerns about taking it with cough or cold medications.

Your doctor will know that but I forgot to mention it.

Despite that contraindication, it's still preferable to being uncomfortable or feeling edgy. It's been around since the 1970s so it should be safe. Good luck!

Ford Transit js a very slow seller!

I'm jealous.

All these Ford trucks get free trips back to the dealership while mine never went back.

According to the Fordtards on this site, recalls are normal when your truck is the greatest technological achievement man ever created.

But why then is the quality control so poor that they can't even put reliable driveshaft components together? And the fix is to replace it every 30,000 miles because they don't have a final fix for it?

"So we don't have a good fix for our mistake, but we will continue to replace your recalled components with more junk until we can figure out how to fix it." Best recall ever.

Ford. Fixed or recalled daily. Or at minimum every 30k.

I like the way you think. I personally was in charge of the internal investigation alleging that we (GM) had faulty ignition switches. I have yet to hear one dead person complain!! FACTS GM style!!

I am a driver owner of ford transit T250 Model 2015. I went for a regular oil and break change at country ford truck, 1720 HERNDON ROAD CERES, CA 95307. The person who inspected my van told me that the driver shaft flexible coupling may have cracked with increased of mileage, and I was told that if I would continue to drive the van, it would cause the separation of the driver shaft. So they told me that we have ordered the driver shaft coupling urgently and you can come back in three days. its been more than a week today and i have been calling them everyday and they have been saying that they havent recieved the part yet. and i have been checking out at other ford company locations but they all dont have that part. . I have been very disappointed and upset that this company is not taking any responsibility for this issue. This is a very non serious and slow system. knowing this problem FORD company should have a solution prepared for it. They should at least provide an alternate van for someone who’s dependent on a job.
