For several years now, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has been in a segment of one when looking for a top-notch, mid-size off-roading pickup truck. But with the addition of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, that's all changed.

That's why we put them in Thunderdome-style head-to-head comparison as soon as we could, specifically focused on their 4x4 capabilities.

Here's a close-up look at the significantly upgraded 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro, now with high-performance remote-reservoir Fox Racing shocks. Look for the full results of this torture test early next week.

Very nice truck, look at that interior compared to the outdated GMs, wow, very nice.

Look at how a real offroad trucks tucks away a full sized spare tire. The lowest point on the back of the truck is the trailer hitch..

The truck that slayed the GM twins.

@Nitro

You must not be more that 5 foot 7.

When I look at the Tacoma's tiny interior my chiropractor's phone rings. Ouch.

@papa, I'm sure they answer when you drive the gm with all that shaking

@Nitro

Evidently, you're not more than 5 foot 7

The better looking and performing truck!

The only issue is the oem Goodyear Wrangler's!

If I were to buy one, they would be replaced with BFG KO2's immediately!

When I ordered my 2016 SR 4X4 and they came with crappy tires at 245/75 on sweet satin 16x7 rims, but as usual I budget well and in less than 3 days after taking delivery with just 10 miles on her, I switched to 265/75 BFG KO2's, no mods, no nothing to get the bigger tires on and sold all 5 oem's back to the dealer.

Cannot do that with the Colorado! You would need a lift kit to make that simple move in the lower models.

That is why the Tacoma has such a strong following and backing! Simple mods and you get so much more!

Watch for a Flying Hood scoop, are those seats plastic?

@papa, I am 6'2". To you give you some credit (which I hate doing), I never actually sat in a Toyota, so I do not know. I was just stating it has a nice looking interior.

Really surprised they didn't finish painting it before handing one over to you guys. -1 for primer

@Nitro-you said it yourself, you've never sat in a Tacoma so you have absolutely no idea or concept of the differences between the interiors nor the seating positions of the front seats. The Taco's interior is vastly outdated by that of the GM twins. Before you comment you really should do yourself a favor and check them out personally.

I'm sure they answer when you drive the gm with all that shaking

Speaking of shaking, how is that Superduty speed wobble treat'in ya?

@gms, my Powerstroke is smooth and quiet, with 95K miles and counting, no issues, thanks for asking, For dis number 1 and I can see why.

@bat, again just stating by looking at he interior, it looks much nicer than the old gms. I would never really look at these trucks becasue I would never buy one. Site like this show all of them so people me can see them.

"no mods, no nothing to get the bigger tires"

@oxi -

You do realize that there is only 20 millimeters (3/4 inch) difference in width between your stock tires and the KO's?

Someone had a heavy object fall on their head some time in their life!

@ amateurhour,

No!

Going from a 30" tire to a 32 inch tire is a big difference!

I gained 1 full inch of ground clearance and filled the wheel well's by 1 full inch, so their is a difference, major one because I picked up my truck with the smaller tires and filled the gaps with my new ones!

You park my SR 4x4 next to a stock one, my sits taller and the wheel wells are nicely filled.

There is no disputing that This is a great little truck. Looks good and is useful.
GMC has a much nicer interior in the GMC Canyon than the Toyota or Chevy, but for a truck they all look great.

Come on Toyota , sell us the diesel version here. It would get me to finally buy one of your trucks.

@oxi - I was talking about width and since you mentioned height. An extra 1 inch in height is nothing.

@gms, my Powerstroke is smooth and quiet, with 95K miles and counting, no issues, thanks for asking, For dis number 1 and I can see why.

With 95k miles you have certainly experienced the death wobble, stop lying.

6'7" 2017 Taco TRD off-road owner. Fits me with room to spare.

@amateurhour an inch is everything to a GM truck, the GM trucks have a hard time fitting the right sized tires in the wheel wells. that's why every lifted GM truck has big gaps between the top of the tires and the fender.

I laugh at the GM truck guys that can't turn their steering wheels more than 3/4 due to rubbing.

@Tyler - that is nitpicking. I have yet to see a pickup not be able to clear an extra inch in height or even width.

LOL! Toyota offroad truck comes with shopping mall tires and no front locker! Yup Toyota will lose and GM will smoke it hands down.

I have to agree with some others.
Really nice truck but that interior looks like poop.

Segment of one???

Perhaps the author has never heard of a small company called Nissan that makes this apparently unknown truck called a Frontier Pro4x?

@ amateurhour,

I will take that extra inch of ground clearance any day, even over 50 more hp.

@ johnny doe,

Front locker on an IFS is really not that great! Bind it and it will grenade it, watch and see...
