Thin Year for U.S., Canada Journos With 2018 Truck Award

The semifinalists for the 2018 North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year Awards have been announced, and just as we expected, this was going to be a thin year on the pickup truck side of the equation. In fact, there are only three entries to the 2018 Truck of the Year Award: the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, 2018 Ford Expedition and 2018 Lincoln Navigator. Bet you can't guess which one we think should be chosen.

Normally, the Truck of the Year Award semifinalists are announced this time of year, with the three finalists announced later at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, but since there are only three vehicles that qualify this year, all three will pass right on through to the next round.

This particular award typically garners considerable attention in the auto industry because of the quality of scope of the automotive journalists that make up the jury, which constitutes around 60 jurors from both the U.S. and Canada.

As is usual with this particular award, the winners will be announced at the first press conference on the first day of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 14, 2018.

I thought the chevy was all new?

Considering that GM's big SUV models (Yukon's 2 models plus Tahoe/Suburban) outsold Ford's Expedition by 4x in 2016 you can imagine that the board of directors at Ford is watching their Blue Oval turn green with envy.

The next Expedition is basically a re-skinned 2015 F150 with IRS.

Despite its size will NOT feature a V8 option, nor offer the PowerStroke diesel. Who knows why.

Ford's 6.2 engine would be the perfect fit for most families.

From only front quarter angles, kinda looks to folllow GM's hearse look.

@papa, talk about the pot calling the kettle......you mean just like GM twins are dieing with jealousy of that blue oval when it comes to full size trucks....where is your slaes figures on suzs coming from?

Oh contrair.

Ford's Ecoboosts engines are what most families need, want and desire.

The Expedition is great looking and capable.
GM is definitely going to have revise the Hearse looking Suburban.

@whoever calls himself Jeff S these days

The 3.5 turbo Ford engine has been available in the Expedition for a couple of years and the market yawns. A lot. Dead slow. Only selling 25 percent of what GM sells in large SUVs.

Ford shareholders see it. Take a look at today's stock charts for the two companies.

@papa, one day you will awake from that coma and have a clue. Wow you are amazingly inaccurate on everything you talk about, but then again I understand the jealousy. i would act the same way if my twins couldnt compete with Ford.

@Nitro

Suburban plus YukonXL models. 97k
Tahoe plus Yukon swb models 156k
Expedition 59k

all figures refer to 2016.

Look at the respective pages at Wikipedia.org for year by year breakout of sales totals. This is the last time I look up the numbers for you. Learn to do it yourself of have mommy do it.

GM sells more full-size SUVs. Doesn't mean they are the best or that Ford needs a gas guzzling high revving V8. We know you didn't buy one for your truck when given the choice.

I like the Expedition's new 2nd gen Ecoboost and 10 speed more than the Tahoe's weak 5.3 and 6 speed. And I think most people who are not GM fanboys will agree.

You seem to only care about sales and how big of a fan you can be, and not what families are getting for their money.

@papa, there is a reason why colleges do not let you use WIKI for actually sources. You would know this if you were actually educated.

@Nitro, just because I dropped out of highschool in the 8th grade doesnt meant I cant source who I want. Did you notice I also combined the twin suvs-hehe.

@jeff s, nobody cares about families, remember GM had the key issues and they didnt care about that either. sales matter and when you combine every gm vehicle(even cars) they beat Ford trucks.

@papa, you are really making no sense anymore, but I agree with some of your statement.

PUTC has completely lost control of idiots who use other peoples names in the comments section.

The illiterates like Nitro are bad enough but the Fake JeffS and the various BAFO psycho identities take a lot of the enjoyment out of this site's comments section.

@papajim

Start looking at who's buying large luxury SUVs. Wealthy non-car type men and rich soccer moms are driving these things. All they want is for their luxo-barge to include every creature comfort under the sun, ride like a dream and merge with traffic effortlessly and quietly.

Torque is torque, whether from a Turbocharged V6 or large V8--they don't care about what they don't know.

@ Ford Fanboys

Here you idiots go!! GM rules the large suv segment you clowns.

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2017/01/2016-december-usa-large-suv-sales-figures.html

BTW: I would take a 5.3L over a 3.5L twin turbo anyday! 5.3L is a proven small block V8 that will put 200K miles on it without a sweat. And I could care less how fast it is 0-60 because I'm hauling my kids in it you imbeciles!! If I wanted something fast I would buy the Jeep Trackhawk!!

Ford guys gotta stop huffing exhaust fumes from your vehicles

TINYGMC:

The entire literate world knows the GM SUVs sell better, Captain Obvious. As far as comparing drive trains--until you've actually driven a turbocharged Navigator, please stop talking.

@papa, I'm not sure who you are anymore, but agree this site needs to crack the IP address verification to be a site member, that would stop all you guys who use different names, I am so confused, time to start going to real forums to talk to real people.

@TNT, I can attest that that 5.3 was junk in 2 of my silverados(1 did make it to 110K miles), but I actually owned them, remember stats you guys post are meaningless to people who owned them and had issues. Go drive the said ford engines, and you will be amazed, GM is old and outdated, and of course shaky

Here's a challenge for my incurable GM friends:

Find one recent comparison test between the Tahoe and Expy EcoBoost where they picked the Chevy as the winner.

The old Ford design out-tows, out handles, has more passenger and cargo room and is quieter than your GM.

Look it up.

@ Nitro and Reblood/.......I mean HICK

I have driven the new 3.5L turbo...my step dad has one..Other than being pretty quick...they fail in towing fuel economy and driving fuel economy...they are junk!!! Get a clue

The new navigator is a joke compared to the escalade. It outsells your gator 4 to 1...

@ Redblood/...HICK

You have not and will never drive a Navigator because the way your dress, look, talk, and handle yourself. Lincoln wouldn't allow you in the doors! You look to much like a bum off the street, with no education! Because at Lincoln its "American Luxury" or "Travel Well". We all know you are neither!!

TINYGMC aka: PILLOW-BITER

You're absolutely right!! I don't drive a Nav. I drive an E-class M-B.

Hahahaha!!!

Nice job, genius.

@ Hick

When you get up from your knees, wipe your face, and realize how stupid that response was......bc we all know you only drive a 1989 Ford Bronco 2 with Steer Horns on the front bumper you clown

@ Hick

Thanks for compliment too!! I am a genius, you on the other hand are not!!

Start looking at who's buying large luxury SUVs. Torque is torque Posted by: redbloodedxy | Sep 20, 2017

@redbloodedxy

I'd take your bet.

Take a look at the top luxury SUVs built and sold anywhere in the whole bleeping world and show me even ONE that does not offer a V8 (besides Ford).

Mercedes? Check.
BMW? Check.
Rover? Check.
Audi? Check.
Escalade? Check.
Lexus? Check.
Infinity? Check.

You need to do your homework. In my earlier comment I was generous enough to acknowledge that Ford's 6.2 gasser and their PowerStroke diesel would make great choices. Start hanging out with a better class of people and you'll find out.

TINYGMC

You are welcome, son. I think you are very misunderstood--things aren't really that bad, are they. Somebody bullying you or something?

I don't care what others on here say about you.. I really believe you are an intelligent person :)

I can tell by how well you communicate in a civil fashion and never get angry or hurl personal insults toward peeps you don't know. Or the way you use facts to support your claim.

You are one class act for sure.

Ford loses again HAHAHA!

@ Hick

Check on all the above!

You really are understanding that I know what I'm talking about! Support facts...yet you and your fanboys hate the fact that us GM boys shove facts in your face and all you guys can comeback with is insults...yet if I come back with a smart@$$ comment/comeback. You get butt hurt...go figure

Thank you!! Have a fantastic day!

Papajim:

You can't be generous with what you don't have. You really aren't that savvy are you?

The 6.2 is too thirsty and the Powerstroke is overkill. My 8 y/o nephew can grasp this.

Now go back to my original challenge. Try and put your hatred aside for 15 minutes and learn something.

TINYGMC

NO REALLY---you are all class. A true winner at life for sure.

Am I right??

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

@ Hick

Your responses really do explain your lack of education!!!

But thank you for more compliments!! I'm glad they cheer you up too!!! Because driving a ford everyday would definitely lower my spirit!

TINYGMC

Actually, you are incorrect. I have 2 Fords, both Mustangs.

I can't tell you much about my spirit because I seldom drive them except during nice weather on certain weekends. If memory serves me well--I had a huge grin on my face the last time I drove one of them.

I don't like to brag, but sometimes i't's great to be successful.

But don't think I am judging you on your lack of knowledge---or anything else.

It's Canada, Who effen cares.....

But youll know it when it comes to buy fuel..

Turbo six has to rev higher and consequently use more gas,,plus high reving motors will never last as long as slow reving V8 that get power at lower rpms,,you punks have lots to learn about motors..

Wow, the irony on this one had to be Chevy Guy.

The extra heat and higher cylinder pressures with a turbocharged gasoline engine means you have to run a lot richer than a big displacement V8 would. Especially when you're trying to get by on regular 87 octane fuel. Ever wonder why the 3.5 Ecoboost has such a big issue with fuel dilution of the engine oil. There are guys with used oil analysis showing well over 5% fuel by volume. Pig rich tuning.

Are the expedition and navigators rebadged GM SUV's? They sure look like it.

Actually, you are incorrect. I have 2 Fords, both Mustangs.

Posted by: redbloodedxy | Sep 20, 2017 3:52:19 PM

HAHAHA! That's exactly what I think when I see someone in a Mustang. Wow, that guy is so successful. You're a real regular comedian.

GM will win. No one buys that Ford junk other then cheap bidding fleet mangers or cheap paying rental companys.

@ Hick

Trust me I don't think your bragging bc having 2 mustangs is far from bragging. Especially if they are pre 2011! All junk!! But hey your happy, go get"er champ!

By the way not to brag either. I have brand new Sierra, wife new terrain, brand new boat, and just got new lake cabin....great being successful also!! All those years of college paid off!

Take Take! Have great night!

GARBAGE MOTORS HAS SOME PARTS MADE IN CHINA EVEN CARS SO THAT'S WHY THEY CALL THEM GARBAGE MOTORS COMPANY AKA (GM) HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Nobody cares about what the liberal media likes anymore...

LOL hmm the transmissions Ford makes for their Mustangs are made in China and are also complete sh*t.

Ford loses again ))

@bricki, and your rusty gm frames made in mexico.

@tnt, I actually dont believe you, you said junk because you didnt like the FE? Lay off that quick throttle, as it tends to help

@ Nitro

I said mustangs are junk bc they are! Before the new coyote motor (pre 2011) they had 300 in 4.6L from 04 to 10, then 260HP in 2003 and before. They were turds...go look at there figures. The 2002 camaro had 325 HP and it kicked the crap out of it!!!

And the fast-back model years were a joke as well with the old 5.0L The burned oil by 80K miles bc their rings were so crappy!! If that engine was so good, how come when you go to the drag strip, ALMOST everyone who has a brain swaps that junk out for a small block GM motor?? Get a glue!!

Ford kept it this way because there was no competition. What are the Mustang Cobra numbers in 2003? Don't say it's a limited car because it's just as limited as the SS Camaro.

What were the SS Camaro HP #'s for the 2003/04 Model? The '01 Cobra had just as much HP as the bigger 5.7L. Motor Trend did a test back then and put the Mustang SVT on top as the Winner testing the '01 Cobra vs '02 SS. '01 has better IRS handling suspension.

You know nothing about cars, just bench racing your daddy's bowties.

Damn midwest people.

GM never could built a platform as solid as the FOX Body with 9 inch rear. Most GM Guys love the FOX but keep their pride with GM motors as an LS cost $50 at your local JY.

I'd rather take better build quality of a Ford Engine.

@ Frank

One had a supercharger on it and it beat it by .1 tenths. That can be made up by any driver....you imbecile!! Ford has to always use turbos or chargers to get HP bc they build junk

@ Frank

I know a heck of alot more than you about cars!! All your mustangs your speaking about at supercharged bc ford can't make a naturally aspirated V8 with high horsepower and torque!! Mayne that's why they had to go to twin turbo charging....uou truly are an old cranky burnt out geeezer....clown

Why don't you do us all a favor and GO play in the street during lunch hour traffic
