Best-Selling Pickup Trucks: January 2018

2017-Super-Duty-F-350A_F-150 - Copy

Although it might look like 2018 is off to a sluggish start, most of the pickup trucks in our January sales chart are doing a little better than this time last year. In fact, the order of the chart changed a bit.

If you check our monthly sales chart regularly, you know the rankings usually don't change much: The Ford F-Series commands the top and either the GMC Canyon or Honda Ridgeline claim the bottom position.

But 2018 has started with some ranking changes and significant slips by Ram and GMC.

Ford seems unmovable from the top spot, while the hot-selling Toyota Tacoma has moved up to the No. 4 position, bypassing the entire three-truck GMC Sierra lineup (half-, three-quarter- and one-ton versions). Additionally, the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado started the year outselling the full-size Toyota Tundra. Although Nissan started the year strong, the Frontier and Titan/Titan XD pickups retain their year-end 2017 positions - Nos. 8 and 9 respectively. To start 2018, the Canyon and Ridgeline switched places, with the Canyon moving to No. 10 and the Ridgeline slipping to No. 11.

Many analysts expect sales to be down by the end of year, likely dipping just below 17 million units sold; however, some of these same analysts seem dumbfounded about the growth of pickup truck sales. We think it's likely that total pickup sales will grow this year, possibly selling more than 3 million units (pickup sales totaled 2.82 million units in 2017). For this all-important first sales quarter, much will depend on weather across the country during the next few months. Look for the pickup wars to heat up as we move into spring.

The Silverado sales is killing it already this year. New models will wipe the floors with F-series.

Speaking of killing it.

Ford rank #1 again

If the driving dynamics and capabilities are as great as the appearance of the new Silverado it will be number one seller in the calendar year 2019. Great to see GM start the new year as the number one selling pickup.

Selling 18,221 less Silverado than Ford is hardly killing it. Even when adding Sierra it's a negative 3,185 to Ford's favor. Be thankful for the mid size twins . Enjoy the remaining time until Ranger comes to market.

Ram sure took a dive.

@FXDX1450..., C'mon man..., gmsrgreat and characters can't do that arithmetic..., LOL

Note to honda, truck means body on frame.

Hey Blueman..., interesting numbers for Chevy sports car fans...

Don't know why I continue to read these articles. Always the same results...Ford, Chevy, Ram. In that order.

Looks like the Chevy guys don't like the 2019 and buying now. But looks like the Ram guys are waiting for the new 2019 trucks.

I follow your thinking Beno..., but why the disparity between the GM twins?

At this rate of poor Camaro sales, they may not be 50yrs of Camaro's production. LOL

Around me the GMC dealers don't have many trucks, but look at any Chevy dealer and they are loaded. I own a GMC over a Chevy just because I like the looks better. I had to order my truck because no dealer had what I wanted. I could find it as a Chevy but I liked the GMC looks better.

Beno..., Good point, Thx

Beno..., Good point, Thx

Blueman..., I haven't any insight as to why the Camaro sales have fallen off..., well, I have a few, but more importantly..., in Formula1, the FIA got rid of all the grid girls..., YIKES!!!

@ Blueman, the Lawn Ranger

Camaro sales may be down, but it still waxes the floor in ALL performance categories than the slow mustang!! And the mustang just did a refresh!! Still can't beat a 3 year old platform.

As for your GT...Corvette just embarrassed that with a car 1/4 of its price!! NOW THAT'S FUNNY!!

Now back on topic! Great job by all manufacturers!! Tacoma kills midsize, good job Ford and Chevy! Mostly everyone up...Darn it GMC...I still think its the best looking out of the GM twins.

Fecal Matter Cumpany is the regular loser as always. You just wait until GM releases the new Silverado/Sierra. Fecal F-$1.50 and Thinger will definitely not help their sales. Sorry your two trucks won’t beat a 4 truck attack. 4 is greater than 2. Same results as always. GM needs to make commercials that say America’s best selling trucks 100 years running 1918-2018. Even if you ask Fecal they will admit they suck the big one.

GM #1 62122
Fecal #2 58937

It won't be too long until they discontinue the Camaro.....AGAIN.

Funny thought, GM tries to make better products then Ford but can't sell anything.

GM couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.

Pathetic!!

I know its early but that Sierra looks bad, maybe GM should dump it. The Chevy numbers represent the huge discounts, which looks good now, but will they hold and stay behind Ford? I'd say Ford has no worries, the uptick is current gm owners trading up, not new customers.

Looks like the Ranger better get here soon. You can see that the mid size trucks are getting very popular.. Great job Toyota, and GM , that is a lot of mid sizers on the road. Congrats to Chevy for selling so many pick ups with an old body style. And Ram, with your pathetic payload and fuel economy for a 1/2 ton, the mid sizers are taking your sales.

The irony is the Vette and the GT are still slower than a racing kart around VIR

January numbers are always impacted by end of year deals in December. February is a short month. The excitement for trucks starts happening in April.

In 2018 RAM will be bringing a new product to market in the Spring so it could be Katy Bar the Damn Door for all half ton sales between now and September.

There are a lot less GMC dealers than Chevrolet, the Sierra sells less because it is more expensive and nicer features , most opt for the less expensive Chevy. All GM trucks are up in sales , good job. I knew after the Ridgeline buyers bought the new model, the SUV/pick up would fall flat.

@TNTGMC..., easy my friend..., I enjoy reading your posts..., a little ribbing is fine but, let's not get caught up in a mine is "....." than yours...
BTW..., there is a lawn company I see every Friday during the season and they have a GMC towing a huge trailer..., it's got a lift kit (must be one foot) and monster truck style tires/wheels..., not to mention an awesome paint scheme (red, white, blue, with stars- pretty impressive)..., their name is T-N-T, that truck is always showroom clean...

Oh and I suspect the Silverado/Sierra will kick but next fall. It makes all other trucks look pretty vanilla looking. My truck already looks old, hoping Ford can get out of the flat side panels and plain look.

Grnzel1..., I wonder what the racing Honda riding mower would do at VIR?...

GM won't quit the Sierra, they sell about the same amount as the Silverado in Canada, when the Ranger comes out, it will drop the f series sales, and the new Silverado will take top,

Very true, the GMC sells very well in Canada, both the Sierra and Canyon. There are more GMC dealers in Canada than the U.S. The Duramax trucks are the most popular HD trucks up here, they sell more Diesel than gas versions, second is Powersroke. In the 1/2 ton market the Ram was #1 until not long ago when GM overtook them in 1/2 ton sales.

@ the Lawn Ranger

That GMC sounds like a nice truck. Not mine though. My user name is after my first Initial N Wifes First Initial.

Its all good...I was just pointing out a fact....no harm no foul towards you!

@ CT

I'm sorry but their is no way Gm will get rid of GMC or Sierra brand. It sells way to much. I rather think new Sierra will look better than Silverado! Atleast that rendering they had last week certainly does!!

Funny thought, GM tries to make better products then Ford but can't sell anything.

@ Frank

yet, the article I showed everyone proves the camaro is a far better car!!! Hummmmm...For everyone here this is what Motor Trend says:

Chevy has done the near impossible, transcended the genre, and turned a once provincial pony car into an honest to goodness world-class sports car. This $46,000 miracle punches so far above its weight that I’m in danger of saying weird things that could easily be taken out of context. Such as, if I were an engineer at BMW or even Porsche, I’d be clearing off my drawing boards.

Where does that leave the Mustang? Well, if you don’t care about measurable performance and are instead into the “cowboy science” side of things, you have your winner. However (and here’s the part I hate writing), in the ways that actually matter to car guys, the 2018 Mustang got its butt handed to it. For less money, Chevy stone-cold out-engineered Ford.

Swallow those words Frank...This is an example of a FACT...and I didn't belittle/insult you once..which I could very easy!! Have a great night!!

OH, And that boat that's on the water is definitely powered by a GM motor!!! Now that is funny!!!

Camaro sales may be down, but it still waxes the floor in ALL performance categories than the slow mustang!! And the mustang just did a refresh!! Still can't beat a 3 year old platform.

Camaro still can't beat the Challenger 10 year old platform in sales. LOL

Yep, Ford F-series kicked butt again with almost 7 000 more units (ouch!) than GOVT motors combined sales of 2 x brands of full size trucks...yikes :-(

@ Blueman

True! Too many people are missing out on a fantastic vehicle that performs like a supercar!! Imagine how bad it would outperform that challenger. And this isn't the 1LE....

Here were the results:

Camaro SS- 12.3 sec. @ 114.4 mph; 0-60 mph @ 4.3 sec.
Scat Pack- 12.9 sec. @ 111.6 sec.; 0-60 mph @ 4.8 sec.
Mustang GT-13.2 sec. @ 111.3 mph; 0-60 mph @ 4.7 sec.

Posted by: Blueman | Feb 1, 2018 4:23:25 PM

The Challenger is selling well because it's the cheapest way to get into a 2 door sports car with a big V8. Like $4-5k cheaper.

The Camaro sales are less but an SS runs well into the $40k range. Not to mention the Camaro is about to receive a mid-cycle update this year, which isn't helping sales numbers.

On a side note, it's nice to see Ford finally caught up in V8 power numbers. It's been painful to watch just how slow the Mustang GT was compared to an SS (or even worse, an SS 1LE). It's not good when a V6 1LE Camaro is faster around a track than a GT.

It's too bad that Ford didn't fix the Mustang styling. It still looks like a 2-door Fusion.

Let's look at some facts concerning Camaro sales. Thru September of 2017 the Camaro sold 53227 units with rental being 6.7%. Mustang sold 62196 with 30.6% being rental. The Challenger sold 52276 with 33.4% being rental. I have no reason to believe rental percentages will change much except for the Challenger being less. Do the math and you can see the Camaro is in good shape. There will be a cheaper version of the Camaro for 2019. GM has opted for profit rather than volume. Those Camaro retail customers are plentiful.

0-60 time.
Even with those close numbers, the 2018 Mustang GT can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds, which beats our the Camaro SS at a 4-second flat time. The sub-4.0 time is enough to win a victory.

My Exact thoughts! Well, that and Chevy's advertised 9k-10k factory (not dealer) rebates.

Posted on other sites also. 2018 Mustang 5.0 w/10 spd auto in "drag strip" mode under 4 seconds 0-60. 2018 2.3 EcoBoost 10spd auto Mustang under 5.0 seconds 0-60. No wonder the 2018 F-150 is killing it with the 10spd. That little 2.3 EcoBoost 10 spd Ranger doesn't seem like such a bad idea after all...

1 Tacoma selling more than 3 Sierra's. Sad.

2018 Mustang GT 159mph
2018 Camaro SS 151mph

Great job ford keep it up and crash the competition. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I don't get it.
How can Ford keep saying they sell more trucks when GM clearly sells more trucks?
Honestly.

like all the year before we know gm will over sale ford,,no big deal,,

@puzzled
Let's clear the air.
FORD dose not claim to sell the most trucks.
FORD does rightfully claim to be the best spelling brand of truck. FORD dose rightfully claim the best selling vehicle.

@ Blueman

You are talking about the 10 spd.....

Both sticks....camaro wins

They haven't done a comparo yet with the 10spd ford to 8 spd camaro

And American muscle is at the drag strip...in real world conditions..
Camaro wins.....read the article Nd swallow your pride

The trap speed of 159 to 151 also had to do with the Camaros tires not hocking up on the dirt...read article
