2020 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra 3500 Pickups: Spied

With the reveal of both the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 (which we'll get to drive this week), the heavy-duty models are getting close. In fact, our spy shooters are seeing camouflaged, full-trim models running rural neighborhoods to do some final towing and hauling testing. Here's what they've just sent us:

"We just got our first look at the headlight LED signatures for the HD Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra thanks to production headlights finally being installed on these prototypes.

"Until now, GM's next-generation heavy-duty pickup truck prototypes had been running with fake placeholder lighting systems that, while functional, offered no glimpse at the trucks' final styling. The Silverado/Sierra HD truck program has now progressed to the point that production-spec headlights have been installed on some test trucks, and we caught a fleet of the finalized prototypes running in a convoy on public roads. In this group were a number of Chevy HD prototypes and a single GMC HD prototype.

"The LED signature of both the Chevy and GMC trucks are now visible through the frontal camouflage, and we can see how the HD trucks' LED treatments differ from the Silverado and Sierra 1500s.

"The all-new Silverado 1500 gets a fairly radical LED treatment, with boomerang-shaped LED signatures serving as the headlight's standout lighting feature. The Silverado HDs also get an eye-catching LED signature, but one that's significantly toned-down compared to the 2019 half tons. The hood, grille and headlights were teased in an official PR teaser shot, but the prototypes reveal more of the final treatment and how the Silverado HD will announce itself when approaching at night. We also got confirmation of the bold "Chevrolet" lettering that runs the full width of the grille. The "R" is clearly visible through a hole in the grille mesh.

"One prototype in the convoy was a Sierra 3500 test truck and it, too, had the production headlight design. However, the GMC HD's LED signature seems to remain more conservative than its Chevy counterpart. The LED signature remains a simple arc outlining the outer edge of the Sierra HD's headlight-very similar to what we see on current Sierra 1500s."

Yes, such as the fact that the F-150's 4x4 system relies on an old unreliable vacuum assist, which is a tribute to how bad Ford engineers are or how cheap Ford is for continuing to use such a weak, unreliable design. Why do I say that? Because the two most common engine options in F-150's sold today don't have a reliable source of vacuum anymore - engine vacuum. These days Ford has attempted and failed to come up with a reliable electric or mechanically driven vacuum pump. These are the same pumps that cause break booster failures left and right, leading to not one but two federal investigations into safety defects of the braking system. 8 years later and Ford's vacuum pumps and cheap plastic components fail at a shocking rate. The weak IWE's fail so often that owners are stuck waiting for parts for weeks. Why do I call the IWE's weak? They're weak because the only part transferring power from the front axle shaft to the wheel is a splined plastic gear. A gear that's infamous for failing while you're offroad, failing in the middle of winter, infamous for seals failing and water being pulled into the vacuum system, etc.

It's a nice weak part to accompany those cheap sheetmetal control arms Ford uses on their IFS since 2014. Gone are the touch forged steel control arms they used to brag about. All in the name of trying to make the truck lighter, even if it means that the IFS is weaker because of it.

And that aluminum bed? Wow, what an insult to sell Ford guys on the bed, promoting it like it's some kind of "military grade" secret alloys. Even making propaganda videos where they refer to the aluminum bed as "military grade armor". The evidence is out there. The beds are an embarrassment. They crack way too easily, the tie downs rip out of the bed sides WAY too easily, the rivets that hold the whole box together rip through extremely easily. Even with a spray-in bedliner the bed floor still cracks. Ford Tough? HAHA, yeah right.

Yeah Ford will be bankrupt again, for a reason. The stock price is down to $9.63....ouch.

Ford's stock value has lost over 46% of its value in less than 5 years. That's despite all those big truck sales figures you Ford girls love to use as evidence that Ford is some kind of "truck leader". They sell so many trucks, why are they continually sliding lower and lower? I thought aluminum was going to be a game-changer for Ford? They can't even outperform a Chevy in an HD towing competition anymore.

Just watched a guy fold the side of his aluminum bed over today. The load was tall and the tie down gave out, the load toppled over and the bed side folded like a burrito. He tried to secure the load but there was nothing to secure it with besides the weak tie downs Ford uses these days. Major disappointment.

The primary purpose of 1-ton and 3/4-ton trucks is towing and HIGHWAY DRIVING. Nobody buys an 8,500 lb diesel truck for rock crawling. Nobody with actual intelligence that is.

Stiff and rough ride IFS, compared to progressive rate coils in Ford and Ram.

As opposed to the jittery, death wobbling stability of a SFA? If you want a soft ride, buy a half-ton. If you use your truck to do work, quality is way down at the bottom of the list of qualities that are important in a heavy duty pickup truck.

Less total suspension travel and articulation.

Again, who cares? Articulation matters if you're trying to drive on the Rubicon trail. 3/4 and 1-ton trucks are NOT designed for rock crawling. Does Ford offer a sway bar disconnect on the Superduty? No they don't. Why? BECAUSE THESE TRUCKS ARE DESIGNED TO TOW, HAUL, AND PLOW SNOW, not for "articulating" over rocks in Moab.

The more the suspension travels, the greater the non-equal steering input from individual suspension deflection.

How often is your suspension actually cycling far enough to notice this as you go down the highway? Rarely. And if it's actually rough enough that the suspension is moving up and down enough to matter, the SFA truck just went into a death wobble after hitting the same expansion joint.

It is called bump-steer and there is a reason why cranking the torsion bar keys is a bad idea.

The only time you should touch your torsion keys is when you're adjusting ride height after you attach or remove a snow plow. Cranking the keys is just as stupid as putting leveling spacers on a SFA truck and then wondering why the truck doesn't track straight even after going to half a dozen different alignment shops.

You’ll hear GM guys talk about he Ford death wobble, but they just accept the constant steering input to keep a GM IFS truck with reasonably sized tires tracking correctly.

Honestly it's sad that you feel the need to defend the low mileage death wobble issues, something that can cost well over $1500 to fix, by blaming the IFS setup for the wandering steering you created because of your decision to put cheap aftermarket wheels with non-stock offsets and oversized tires on. The GMT800 HD trucks had a bad steering setup, especially for kids that bought a used Duramax and though it would look cool to crank the T-bars and put 20" rims with negative offset wheels on it. In reality, the trucks rarely had an issue if you used it as it was designed and intended to be used. At least with a GMT800 Duramax, you didn't have to worry about all the tens of thousands of dollars you'd have to dump in a 6.0 or 6.4 PSD just to keep it from destroying itself.

Sure the last GMT900 update made a big impact, the competition has refined their SFA setups to provide a superior ride, better off-road handling, and very good stability.

First off, I don't see why you're wasting your time trying to emphasize the articulation and overall off-road advantage of a SFA setup over IFS. A HEAVY DUTY DIESEL TRUCK IS THE WORST KIND OF TRUCK TO "OFF-ROAD". Do you know what happens when you take a truck that weighs 8,500 lbs onto a trail that would actually require the suspension to have max suspension travel and articulation? It SINKS.

Wow look at that 2015 Powerstroke dominate offroad LOL.

Also, I've never heard describe death wobble as "superior ride" and "very good stability". An important thing to consider when owners of brand new 2017 F-250 Platinums are told by the dealer that their death wobbling truck "wasn't designed to go over 65 MPH". There a LOT of low mileage 2017+ Super Duty trucks with death wobble and vibration issues. Ford guys swear up and down that Ford was giong to fix the death wobble issues with the 2017. As it turns out, there are even MORE DW and vibration issues with the 2017's than there were before. The two biggest Ford Superduty forums I visit are flooded with 2017-18 Superduty's with death wobble and most of them have less than 20k miles on the truck. One Ford dealer refused to work on his DW as long as the Ranch Hand bumper was on the truck.

I seem to remember the judges saying this about the F-350 in the 2018 One Ton Challenge just a few weeks ago:

"Several judges said that it felt like the trailer was pushing the truck around a lot more than the other competitors, creating a less stable, less confident experience."

If not for the Duramax-Allison combo, GM wouldn’t have but a fraction of their already partly 20%, of the HD pickup market.

Ford wouldn't have as much market as they do if it wasn't for their aggressive use of fleet sales. They build their trucks cheap so they can sell them for next to nothing. Ever wonder why Ford builds their diesel engines in Mexico? Or why they kept using Navistar engines even after the 6.0 ended being the 6 Blow? Between the engine engine and transmission, those two components cost more to build than the rest of the truck combined. Ford can afford to sell them cheap and get more sales because of it, simply because they use cheap Mex labor to keep costs down.


Me personally, I grew sick of needing an alignment or puking a half-shaft every time I took my GM IFS 2500 HD off-road.

I was sick of replacing radiators every time I took my 6.0PSD off-road. The frame flexed so much that any terrain that would "articulate" the suspension would "articulate" the frame just as much. So much that the radiator core support would flex and crack the radiator. Plus the flimsy frame meant my tailgate was all messed up, the bed was permanently torqued, the body mounts were all chewed up, one door was dented up, etc etc

3/4 and 1 ton trucks are the WORST kind of truck to take off road. They weigh too much, especially with 1,000 lbs diesel engine over the front wheels.

I had 285/75R16s and that was considered “too big” and GM wouldn’t honor their warranty after the front diff case cracked.

Ford has the exact same stance when it comes to oversized tires. Go read the fine print in the Ford New Vehicle Warranty. When my transmission started to go, Ford blamed the tires and denied the warranty claim. They denied it again when the ESOF hubs started grinding and 4 wheel drive went out. They do it all the time to guys with big tires on their F-150. Big tires? No warranty says Ford. The only guys with lifted trucks or big tires that don't have a problem getting stuff warrantied are going through dealers that cover the cost of repair themselves. If they actually submitted it to Ford, they would deny coverage in a heartbeat.

I'd be interested to know what mods you did and what you were doing to actually crack the front diff housing. Sounds like there wasn't much intelligence involved in pulling that off. Let me guess, cranked torsion bars or a cheap lift complete with steep CV angles, extra offset wheels, extra big tires, and way too many 4WD launches on dry pavement.

The construction / oil & gas companies I have worked for over the years have given me all three brand of trucks for my company vehicles (Chrysler, Ford, GM). They all had their upsides ... and they all had their downsides as well. In my opinion ... Upsides = GM’s had the nicest cabs & seats, Ford’s lasted the longest when used hard & abused, and Chrysler had the Cummins motor & Dana drive components combination ... Downsides = GM’s independent front suspension components had maintenance issues over time, Ford’s 6.0 & 64 diesels were troublesome for us, and Chrysler’s had automatics transmission problems. All three companies have fallen on their face at one point in time, especially on the heavy duty truck forum. All three trucks today are impressive compared to their previous troublesome generations. As for this new upcoming GM platform ... just my opinion ... I don’t like the Chevrolet across the grill or the larger square-looking headlights. Again just my opinion. My current personal truck ... 2019 Chevrolet 3500HD Crew Cab 4x4 Duramax Diesel (High Country trim). Truck before that was a Ford, Truck before that was a Dodge. The educated opinion is an experienced background with all product offerings ... It is not gained from brand loyalty.
