2018-2019 Ram 1500: Recall Alert

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 4,200 model-year 2018-19 Ram 1500 DS pickups with 3.21:1 axle gears
The Problem: The rear differential may have been insufficiently filled with gear lube, possibly resulting in excessive heat generation and failure. If the rear axle assembly fails, it can cause the loss of drive, or the rear wheels may lock up, increasing the risk of a crash.
The Fix: Dealers will inspect the rear axle oil levels and rear axles with an insufficient amount of oil will be replaced for free.
What Owners Should Do: Ram parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will begin notifying owners Oct. 12. Owners can call the automaker at 800-853-1403, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.

Theres an "oops". Sounds like anyone really effected woulda been covered under powertrain.
Couldn't this be addressed before October 12 if you come in for an oil change with the multipoint inspection? Or, just be a man, grab a flat tip screwdriver, and pop the rubber cap out and stick your pinkie finger in the differential. If no oil is there read your owners manual to see what kind of synthetic gear oil you need. Oh yea, DON'T FORGET THE LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVE (FRICTION MODIFIER)!
Toyota isn't the only one making trucks with under-filled diffs after all.
I have a 2017 with the 3.21 rear end. I guess I'm fine, I need to crawl under there and check it out. These trucks come from Mexico I believe, as the new ones are from sterling heights, Michigan while the warren, Michigan site should be down for renovation for the new HD rams and the forthcoming jeep wagoneer and grand wagoneer. You can tell a mexican assembled ram 1500 with a hemi because they only have a single tailpipe in 2018-2019 regardless of trim. I went to look at a 2018 express quad cab cherry red with the black package but was let down when it had single exit exhaust and an open differential. I wanted the limited slip above all else.
The 2019 Silverado will have a problem free release with zero recalls over it's life. It will continue it's sales domination. Mark my words!!

Don't add friction modifier to gear oil unless your Owners Manual specifically calls for it. Most gear lubes are ready to use right out of the package.
Be sure to check your VIN number to be sure that your particular vehicles diff is requiring special lube. Mine does.
