NHTSA Opens Probe Into 2017 Ford Super Duty Tailgate Issue

Approximately 54,000 model-year Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks are the focus of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into complaints from owners about tailgates that open unexpectedly while the pickup is in motion.

According to Reuters, five owners of 2017 Super Duty trucks had their tailgates drop while driving, seemingly because the latch mechanism released.

So, NHTSA has opened a preliminary investigation to determine whether this issue poses a larger safety risk; if NHTSA's findings show that it does, this will become a manufacturer recall. One year ago, Ford issued a technical service bulletin to dealerships regarding possible water damage to internal tailgate wiring and the measures needed to prevent serious damage. We'll keep track of this investigation going forward.

They should really be looking into all the death wobble problems instead. The 2017 redesign was supposed to finally fix it but it's more common than ever now.

LMBO Furd cant make any thing, first the door latches now the tail gate!

Wow, how embarrassing to be a F-series owner. Not to worry, Ford has the best selling lawyers 100 years running. Those guys have a great record of helping Ford weasel their way out of recalls.

Too bad GM didn't have better lawyers, that deadly ignition thing may have been better handled.

Johnny its been a while, finally got released from Happy Acres. New med doing you good?

Ford needs to recall all of aluminum trucks, not only because the rip apart in an event of an accident, but they tend jump off its frame as well! https://www.f150forum.com/f118/f150-vs-camaro-427956/

@ Clint

Death wobble.....but frank and drools think it ONLY pertains to GM trucks? Yes, the new Fords are worse! And most of them dont have a fix for them!

HAHAHAHAHAHA Found On Road Dead again,,Slayed by Chevy 🤣

Ford sells almost a million pickups each year and the feds are bit*hing about an issue that has so far affected FIVE people? Really?

Write your Congressman and tell him to board-up the doors on these stupid federal agencies that drive up the cost of our products and produce NOTHING of lasting value for taxpayers and consumers. Ditto for the stupid CAFE regs.

My 97 ranger had the same issue...after a 500lb atv rolled back into the tailgate as I backed up. Never had the issue before, and neither did my 84 f250 or my 75 f100.

Of course, those are old Ford's, made back in the good old days before ford went limp wristed like chevy is today.

@ffbte

Are you saying you had an ATV in the bed of a Ranger w/o a tie down? Dude you are dangerous! Stupid crap like that gets people killed.

i can assure you i did not tie the death wobble to GM, however i assure you i did tie crappy front ends to GM (IFS) Death wobble only pertains to Ford and Ram (SFA) wow TNT i really thought you where smarter than that i guess that info didn't come with your masters

and by the way there is a fix for it unlike the GM's shakes or tranny proble the death wobble can be fixed

Ford and GM design there on truck transmissions and heavy duty
Transmission buy American Fiat trucks can’t design a heavy duty
Diesel engine or a transmission.

As tailgates get more complicated...

I remember this happening whenever you didn't fully close the gate LOL

This wont be the last we hear of this "issue".
