By Brian Normile

It's time to preview the last of our competitors in our upcoming 2018 Best Half-Ton Truck Challenge: the 2019 Ram 1500 Limited. We've already shown you the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country, 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat, 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT and 2019 Nissan Titan Pro-4X, and now we have the final challenger, and very likely the one you've heard the most smack talk about.

The Ram 1500, like the GM siblings, came to the Challenge following a comprehensive, top-to-bottom, bumper-to-bumper full redesign. The frame, suspension, powertrains, plus full interior and exterior were all significantly updated for 2019 to better compete with the top-selling Ford F-150.

This particular Ram was a Limited trim level, the highest in 2019 Ram 1500 lineup. Standard features at this level include the 12-inch multimedia display with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, front and rear air suspension, and power running boards. Standard safety features include front and rear parking sensors and blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic detection for a base price of $56,195 (which excludes the $1,695 destination fee).

Options on our tester included the 5.7-liter V-8 with eTorque mild-hybrid technology, which also adds an active noise control system, adding $2,645 to the final price. The $2,695 Level 1 Equipment Group included a 19-speaker premium Harmon Kardon stereo, adaptive cruise control that works down to a full stop, front collision detection and automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, brake assist to apply additional braking force to avoid a collision and a surround-view camera. It also added comfort and convenience features like ventilated rear seats and automatic parking tech that allows for hands-free parallel or perpendicular parking.

The rest of the options on our tester were an a la carte affair: $200 for the Granite Crystal Metallic paint and $195 for a body-color bumper; $550 for the bed cover; $95 to replace the 3.21:1 axle ratio with a 3.92:1 ring and pinion; $545 for the electronic rear locking differential; $545 for a bed cargo management system with four movable tie-down hooks; $1,295 for a panoramic sunroof; $445 for the 33-gallon fuel tank; $995 for the RamBox bed storage system; and finally $295 for the integrated trailer brake controller.

Together, all the options totaled $10,500, then add in the $1,695 destination fee and you have our test unit Ram 1500 Limited's total price coming in at $68,390, the highest priced half-ton in the test.

Come back Monday to find out which of the five trucks won our 2018 Best Half-Ton Truck Challenge. Any guesses?

beautiful truck

'BEAUTIFUL TRUCK"

Is that all you got?

This is a glorious truck. This is the truck that redefines "truck"

It's got drivetrain sophistication the others lack, it's got beauty and comfort the others strive to achieve. It's got style out of this world.

It's the leader

Ram sent there best,
no 10 speed?
22's?
most expensive

My opinion...Far and away number one interior, okay side profile, similar to last generation Toyota Tundra, okay front look...a little better than Ford. I have no proof, but I think the Hemi is a very durable engine, and it is competitive, but I think they should have upped their game on that one. No way I would get the e-torque version until it has been around for a few years. Overall, I would prefer the Silverado exterior, with the Ram interior, with either the GM 6.2, Ford 5.0, or the Ford 3.5, along with the Ford/GM 10 speed transmission. Glad I am not in the market for a half-ton PU at this point, it would be a tough, TOUGH choice.

$68,390
I hope it can win since it's the most expensive.
I don't care for the busy dash. Too many smooth buttons, forcing you to look for them rather than reaching over and feeling the appropriate dial or raised button (without looking).

I'd skip the Ram boxes, I don't think you could fit a pallet inside the bed. Is the AC plug in the bed still an option if you don't get the Ram box?

Just saw this truck get smoked by a 5.0 10 speed F-150 on another website, I think this will be the second slowest truck (Titan will be slower).

I'd like to see a review of an optioned out Tradesman model.
Crew Cab Tradesman with the Hemi, 4x4 Off Road package and max tow equipment. A work truck that you can haul the family around in comfortably.

I hope ram has there fuel pump issue figured out. Just had another 2016 hemi 5.7 drop a valve before 150k. Ram has a nice looking truck, but I'm too familiar with their unreliability to think about buying any engine they make in-house. The 2020 3/4 with the outsourced Cummins and this interior will be pretty sweet thou.

that explains why it's taken the #2 spot from "chebbie" but i wouldn't go as far as you did pops, why don't you put your money where your mouth is and buy an import

@drools

GM sells more trucks than Ford or RAM.

Do we have to go through THAT bloody exercise again.

Find an ID that doesn't have the word FORD in it if you want to be taken seriously. Ford is on the verge of being a "former" automaker and your favorite truck is about to be joining the ranks of Mercury and Edsel in the history museums.

Odd PapaJoke doesn’t attack his fellow GM Shills for having GM/GMC in their user name.

He’d be taken serious if he wasn’t a narrow minded biased grumpy old man. Especially considering he drives a 15yrs old gutless 4.8L while going at others for their personal vehicle(s)

@papajim

"GM sells more trucks than Ford or RAM"

Ford sells more trucks in any class it sells trucks than ANY other maker.

"Ford is on the verge of being a "former" automaker and your favorite truck is about to be joining the ranks of Mercury and Edsel in the history museums."

You seriously believe that?? Did you believe gm would be a "former" automaker when their stock went to zero and they went bankrupt??

Ford wont be joining the ranks of pontiac, oldsmobile, saturn, sabb or hummer anytime soon......

I'm going to dignify your comment because you got lucky and said something right for a change. Bankruptcy was not used in the old GM situation. It should have been.

Instead Obama and Bush chose a political solution that screwed GM's bondholders and saw the stock price crash. Not that Ford or RAM did any better.

The whole auto industry was underwater and Washington was afraid it would go kaput. They were wrong.

Luckily the government's GM solution worked (except for those who were screwed by the resolution).

you are the biggest hypocrite on this site, you got no problem with TNTGMC or GMSGreat, fordsarejunk, you have got to be the biggest loser i'v come across on the web in a long time you are so lost and confused by your own bias, i'v read through so many of your debates you had with other people and all you do is look down your nose to everyone you talk to, no one can even debate with, their's no debate it's either your way or no way, and for phuck's sake change you ID papajim sound like a controlling old man, you phucking liberal

GM did go thru bankruptcy.
As far as who builds the most trucks. If you going to add GM full and mid size you should add Ford full and medium size. In third quarter of 2018 Fords sells the most trucks.
GM full-size as compared to Ford full size has since 2015 been losing market share at state of 5% per year.

^^

Agreed!!! 100%

The Silverado exterior is by far the best looking truck presented in this comparison. The Ram interior has a nice mix of materials but somehow they managed to make it all too busy. The dash lost its sense of flow due to that large unattractive piece of glass touchscreen. (The Rebel dash is lovely) The Ram however easily bests anything that Ford could bring with their rapidly aging designs.

@JTT

You are so wrong.

In bankruptcy the assets of the bankrupt person or company are liquidated. In return, the bankrupt entity receives protection from its creditors, shareholders and bondholders until the process is resolved in the bankruptcy court.

Show us how smart you are and tell us who received the liquidated assets of the old GM.

We'll be waiting for your answer.

Nice truck--a winner in my mind. Not a fan of the Ram box, though.

You seemed like a reasonably intelligent person, until now. Enjoy moron status and all that comes with it.

@drools

I sincerely enjoy the back/forth we have on sites like this. It flexes my mental muscles a little bit to punt your stupid comments over the fence. Your comment about the new 1500 RAM was judged by me to be what's called 'faint praise' and I was not going to allow it to pass.

The RAM is a groundbreaking truck even without the e-torque drivetrain. Talk to people who have just bought one of these trucks. Every guy I've talked with says he feels like a guy with a new baby or a new grandson.

Every F150 Ecoboost buyer I've talked to loved his truck except for lousy gas mileage and the engine sounds pitiful and the interior looks like a Rubbermaid tub, and the brakes suck. My last new Ford was a bummer (transmission).

I'm not unfair to the Ford guys. The company today is suffering from bad management at the highest levels, although they have a few solid execs the situation does not look good long term.

We'll be waiting for your answer.

wow you really are off, you are mentally unstable and your ID says it all

If value to performance is part of the testing equation the Nissan wins. Otherwise it's anything except the ones with the little silver plastic GM badge on the fender.

Ram doesn't need a 10 speed transmission.
The ZF 8 speed is an amazing transmission.

If I had to rank the transmissions based on durability, ease of shifting and quickness it would go like this:

1- ZF 8 Speed
2- Aisin 7 speed in Titan
3- Aisin 6 speed in 3500 RAM and Titan XD

I work at an auction yard and I drive all of these trucks all the time.

Ford sells the most trucks. An undeniable truth. Too bad Jim gets crazy insane like Jim Acosta when he talks trucks.

GM went thru bankruptcy in 2009.
Chapter 11, Title 11, in the Southern District of New York.
The assets of old GM were purchased by New GM.
Why are you being disingenuous?

you are the biggest hypocrite on this site, you got no problem with TNTGMC or GMSGreat, fordsarejunk, .....

Why should papajim have a problem with me. Please be specific without being the arsehole that you are.

Nice truck but just not as good as a GM. Much better then a Ford or Toyota though.

@ papajim My answer above shows you are wrong.
Are you choosing to ignore post?

nice looking truck. Best interior by far. Good power train. I think it will perform very well

You having bad day today. Your insults are coming from every angle! Go for a walk or grab a coffee. U could always drive that ecoboost around and listen to the fake exhaust note coming through the speakers??

Now show us the links where you find GM losing 5% a year market share.

If Ford could advertise the medium duty trucks give them more sales than GM with the mid-size, trust me it would be done already.

Just find me some data to prove yourself correct. Google does not give me any results to back you up.

Spoiler Alert

Ram wins hands down. Ram out towed the Ford and GM on another site and won the best ride part too.

Yes everyone... TNTGMC is also GMSRGREAT. He messed up in the Nissan Titan article and showed everyone he’s a hypocrite.

The only truth you believe is what Ford subliminally sends out to its fanboys.

The only truth you believe is what Ford subliminally sends out to its fanboys.

Idiot. You dumped on your own argument.

Chapter 11 is reorganization, not bankruptcy.

Under Chapter 11 the court grants the applicant enough time to arrange terms with their creditors, which allows them to avoid bankruptcy liquidation. During that time the creditors have to lay off of the applicant, in this case GM.

Thus, is why the court waved a magic wand and allowed the Old GM to shaft shareholders and bondholders, and the New GM to be born, with the full blessing of the liberal media and politicians like Obama and Bush.

Now go find someone you can screw with who won't embarrass you in front of all the other commenters on PUTC.

To show papajim isn’t biased, or a shill, he should have a problem with you due to having GM in your username. Jut like he has issues with someone having Ford in their username.

Can’t have it both ways. Unless PapaJoke is fuqing moron.

@papajoke

http://www.uscourts.gov/services-forms/bankruptcy/bankruptcy-basics/chapter-11-bankruptcy-basics

Learn something old man.

I don't follow links that someone posts on a website comments page.

If you do you're a bigger fool than I originally thought. Seriously, go to a reliable site like Wikipedia where you won't get a virus and read about bankruptcy.

DO NOT rely on government websites. They have no idea. If they did, they would not be working for the government in the first place.

You maybe old, but you are immature.

There’s a reason wiki is considered unreliable as a source. It can be edited by anyone.

Look up wiki and unreliable

@Kapowski you are unreliable and don't have a brain either.

Yes you are.

@ papajim Thanks for calling me an idiot. That helps to define your IQ
So the rest of the world is wrong about GM going thru bankruptcy.
When you think you are right and the world is wrong you have real problems.
GM walked away from debt. You have to go thru bankruptcy to do that.
