GM Begins Transition to Single Pickup Platform

Chevrolet-silverado-2019-trim-lineup copyA

The strategy to produce both old (K2) and new (T1) Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks was a clever way of making a smooth transition from one important set of half-ton pickups to a set of all-new and just as important (some might say more) half-ton pickups.

According to Automotive News (subscription required), the production of old and new versions of Chevrolet and GMC half-ton platforms should be complete by the end of 2019. Because GM has two plants producing the trucks, the automaker was able to build a small backlog of pickups for the dealer pipeline and keep the plant in Silao, Mexico, running while swapping over the Fort Wayne, Ind., plant to produce the crew- and double-cab models of the all-new 2019 Silverado/Sierra 1500 platform with the V-8 engines. The Mexico plant is expected to start producing regular- and crew-cab 2019 Chevrolet and GMC half-ton trucks by the first quarter of 2019.

Another piece of strategic genius turned out to be creating what GM called the "Oshawa shuttle," which allowed the automaker to lighten the production load at the Fort Wayne plant by sending double-cab Silverado and Sierra 1500s to its Oshawa, Ontario, plant to be painted and assembled. That resulted in very little production down-time during the transition and allowed Chevy and GMC to be more flexible as orders for the new half tons came in from U.S. dealerships.

The all-new trucks began arriving at dealerships at the end of the third quarter; by this time in 2019, the only pickup being produced by GM will be the T1 platform in all three cab styles — regular, double and crew.

I got a good laugh out of the articles "genius" comment! Really, it's hardly a genius move to correct earlier bonehead decisions! It's more like getting smacked hard upon the side of the head with reality as you continue to fail to close on the leader and now your status as second-place is in danger, as well.

LOL chevy fans are hilarious... 4th place out of 5 kids and that was your High Country 6.2V (ya know, with the engine they hardly sell any of) got destroyed.

Ford outsells chevy full size trucks every year for the last 40+... Ford outsells GMC full size trucks every year for the last 40+. Some years Ford even outsells GMC and Chevy full size trucks combined. Ford didn't MAKE GM split its truck lines, offering, marketing, dealer network, styling, into 2 products with different make, model names and VIN #s. Just comparing 1 Full size product to another... Ford also didn't take any government money it used its own equity for private loans. Ford never declared bankruptcy, and so far has never defaulted on its debts. It also has 3 times more of the 10 best selling vehicles in the world of all time ever than GM. GM has never built a production vehicle that touch the GT/GT40 in supercar performance, nor a production truck that can touch the Raptor off road. Bet most the GM fans don't even know the story GM or Chevy's founders. Trust me they don't rate with Ford, Carneigie, Rockefeller, Edison, Tesla, the Wrights or Morgan.

Oh no!... This could be the “Shivvy-meltdown”..., Just saw a commercial advertising a whopping 15K $$$ off for a new 2018 model..., Shivvy must be hearing the sound of that Hemi V8 getting ready to pass them up on the sales chart...
Well, the good thing is we won’t have as many “Shivvies-Shakin” out on the highway! 🙈🙈🙈

Funny tons of Ford dealers have been offering $15k or more off 2018 F-150's since March of this year. "Ecoboost Rules" was telling us back in June that if you don't get at least 20% off a new 2018 F-150 you got a bad deal. So much for trying to save Ford Motor Company. And people wonder wny Ford's stock has lost 50% of its value since 2014. Everybody on here was telling us how Ford's new "military-grade" super secret alloy body was going to be a game changer. No only was the bed embarrasingly weak, the truck was selling so poorly Ford had to make up excuses like a frame shortage to explain the ho-hum sales. Meanwhile dealers were already offering $13k off a 2015 F-150 XLT by early May 2015.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The “Shivvy-Shake” musta made you spill your “Shivvy-Koolaide” all over yourself..., LOL
Don’t Drink & Drive

You would think after the $11 billion screwing of the US taxpayers, that they could build highly profitable pickups in the U.S.A..

@fake Fullsize,
Ford makes it's money selling the truck to the dealers. They don't care if the dealer sells them at invoice or MSRP. The rest of your post makes absolutely no sense either. The sales leader is ho mum. What does that say about everyone else?

This could be the “Shivvy-meltdown”...,

Under the same exact conditions, the FORD would completely melt down to the frame rails. The Chevy, the so much. The Chevy can better handle the heat. Just say'in.

The Chevy, not so much.

GM and Ford are going bankrupt again, maybe even fiat and many more luxury brands who are not converting to EV's fast enough. Oil is being kept at very low prices to try to slow this transition down, those that put resources into diesel oil burners are going to feel the pain now. GM is also losing 18,000 employees trying to stay afloat and Ford lost their entire car lineup. They have no money to invest in the build of EV's GM spent 36 billion and came out with the Bolt EV, it hardly compares to a Model 3 from Tesla. Ford will be using resources from its car bankruptcy but resources and money is thin, they likely will go bankrupt. Stupid decision to build diesel variants in the hopes to meet CAFE laws, very dumb and I have been saying it for 7 years now.

CAFE was essentially ended a year ago. Nice try

Years ago when the all-new 2004 came out, they shook like a leaf rolling down the highway to the point that a guy in a car behind you could watch the bed on your truck shaking while driving. From what I heard, Ford traced it to the new outboard rear shock mounting they started using. Strangely, they kept building them that way ever since. Ford never really did fix the vibration problem. A ton of 12th gens had it too. 15 years later and Ford ignores the problem.

You are about 50% correct here. So that would make you a qualified CNN journalist. In 2004 some of the new fully boxed frame trucks did have a a rotational vibration. We were large volume and I'd say we had about 1 in 4 complain about the vibration. The beds didn't shake, but if you had change in the upper dash it would pick up the vibration. Kind of like the shaking water bottle that GM owners used to show their concern, just not as bad. We were fixing the trucks with complete rear end assembly's. The problem was, the Visteon (if I remember correctly) rear axles. About 50% of the replacements would end up needing replacing.

Sorry, back to the topic. GM building super high profit trucks in Mexico........proceed

Plenty of 09-2018 F-150's vibrate bad enough to make the water bottle shake.

Plastic and Aluminum is hard to beat 0 to 60. The bed gets desroyed when you load it with more than a fork lift load of tampax, lol

You found like 7 videos of newer Ford trucks with a vibration? 3 by the same guy who is clearly "enhancing" the videos. Lets search Chevy shake on youtube and paste about 40 pages!! Probably see some poor mileage 2.7 4cyl shaking? Back to topic son! Mexican built Chevy Silverados!! Next!

Please show proof? I love my Hemi, but it is way slower than my EcoBoost. I've hauled loads of various materials like a normal person without incident. Don't stoop to the GM guy's level.

Mark,
Can I have the address to the plant in Mexico? I need a job.

This forum is a joke, very childish.

Maybe the caravans of refugees can get jobs in Silao making GM trucks.

Chances are they'll obtain employment requiring less menial tasks such as assembling Ford's. The language barrier won't even be an issue. After all, how difficult can if be to demonstrate applying glue to 2 pieces of aluminum. HAHAHA!

Whoa seems like Vince hit a nerve. You going to cry? I guess you're upset because you don't like being proved wrong. The 09-14 and 15-18 F-150's have just as many vibration issues that are just as severe as the GM trucks. Caused by the exact same issues - driveshafts and rear axles.

Pretty pathetic that Ford fanboys resort to bashing other brands when the exact same issues are present in all of Ford's truck lineup.

Casual Observer, Here is a tip for you. Lose the little Dr. Phil routine. And don't spam with a laundry list if links. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I finally got rid of my 2015 F-150 lemon. It rattled my fillings out and the 4WD failed half a dozen times. They showed me the plastic gears Ford uses to automatically lock the hubs. It's embarrassing to identify as a Ford fan after seeing that. Bought a 2018 Tundra.

I just bought a 2018 Silverado LT crew 4x4 with the 5.3L V-8. A lot of what someone is looking for depends on what they buy.
I wasn't looking for what so many of these truck review people talk about.
I wanted a steel body, 5.3L V-8, with plenty of interior space and whatever came standard in the truck. I still view a truck as a utility vehicle and the only additions I'll add are the following OEM parts, seat covers, cold air intake, possibly upgrade the exhaust and heated exterior mirrors.
If this truck was engineered and put together correctly and I take extra good care of it, I'll drive it til it hits 300k or more.
I've never owned an F-150 or Ram 1500, nothing against either, I just chose the chevy ecause of the features and price. I guess we'll see if it lasts.
