2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 to Pace 2019 Daytona 500
By Brian Normile
Chevrolet has announced that its 2019 Silverado 1500 will be the official pace vehicle at the 2019 Daytona 500 β the "Great American Race" β on Feb. 18. Retired NASCAR fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive the Silverado for the 61st running of the race.
Related: Ready for the Revolution: 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 First Drive
The Silverado pace truck will be the first time a truck has led the pack and the 13th time a Chevrolet product has paced the race β seven times with a Camaro and five times with a Corvette. It will be powered by the updated 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Earnhardt Jr. expressed his enthusiasm for taking on pace truck duties. "I've had a lot of fun and a lot of success at Daytona over the years," he said. "Now I can't wait to get out on that track in a Silverado. Away from the track, I've driven Chevy trucks all my life, and I'm excited to have this unique experience of pacing the Daytona 500 with the Silverado."
He's not wrong about his successes at Daytona. Earnhardt Jr. won at the track four times in his career, including the Daytona 500 twice in 2004 and 2014. He also finished in the top five 13 times and in the top 10 19 times in 36 races at Daytona International Speedway.
If Chevrolet ends up making a Silverado 1500 pace truck replicas available to the public, it would be a great step toward offering a 6.2-liter sport truck as part of its half-ton lineup.

Dang! Once again, GM for the win.
Dang! Once again, GM for the win.
Great looking truck
Put a supercharger on it, give it the magna ride like an SS camaro and a few other hot rod goodies and id buy one.
Make it happen GM.
@Brian Normile
Referring to Junior's wins at the great speedway is faint praise.
Throughout his years in Cup racing he was a dominant figure on that track, even in the races & events he didn't win. Just like his dad. Now he's a great face for the whole Chevy team.
Merry Christmas to the whole Earnhart organization and especially his family.
says he has driven chevies all his life, Well Duh, if your dad owned a chevy stealership and the guy you drive for a living main sponsor is chevy what else would you drive for nothing...
I know a guy who's dad owned a Budweiser distrubution business who drank Coors....
Congrats to Joey Logano and the # 22 Ford Fusion team for winning the 2018 championship. Congrats to Ford and all the Ford Fusion teams for winning the 2018 Manufactures championship!
2018 Manufacturers Championship
1 Ford - 19 wins
2 Toyota - 13 wins
3 Chevrolet - 4 wins
@Dave
Did you attend school or did you learn to mis-communicate that way by accident? Some of us hope to elevate our status in the group. Clearly, you chose a different path.
Merry Christmas to you too
@ dave
Id say Mr. Earnhardt is a bright man for owning a chevy dealership and driving the most reliable trucks on the road.
Btw..he is a multi millionare. He could choose to drive whatever he prefers...that just happens to be a GM product.
We would also be fools to think he doesnt own something exotic as well!!
Also. Since the Ford boys are bragging.....Chevy leads total wins 779 to 658. They also have 39 championships to 16 for Ford. Great job GM
Good day to all of you!!
papjim I lived in Mooresville for a while, just talking the talk...I do that now and then, just to lighten things up
and to TNTGMC, I was taking the op's comment in to reality, his dad Dale, not him Dale Jr. owned a Cheyy dealership in Statesville, so why would he drive something else. He has a big garage(shop) and it full of old Chevy's
fyi" I drive a Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and it's great.
@ dave
How well does the ZR2 ride and drive on highway. Thinking about trading in wifes terrain for one. She loves driving the sierra but its too big and bulky to park at her work. She loves the riding height of trucks
What mpgs u get with it? Just curious.
TNT, my ZR2 rides pretty smooth on the highway, I take several 1,000 mile trips each year and it has plenty of power and rides nice, on highway and in town, The wife likes it too and she drives a GC Overland. As soon as the Dura-tracs wear out I will be putting on a quieter set of tires, like Michellen Defenders or Geolanders.
Around town I get about the same as most all Colorado/Canyons 17-18, on highway, depending on the wind, I have gotten anywhere from 15 to 24 at 75mph...I drive across Kansas and when it is windy it is windy
other guys when they have switched tires to a more streetable tire they have seen improved gas mileage. Some dealers have been known to swap tires free when you purchasee the truck, I hunt and fish but do not rock crawl so a regular AT tire would work fine for me.
for more info go to Coloradofans,
@ Dave
Thank you sir for the response. Yes, she wouldn't be doing any rock crawling but alot of midwest highway travel with many snowy days in winter, so a nice all terrain tire would work great. Nice to hear it gets decent (24)
Her terrain averages 26 and its the AWD.
Take care
Dang! Once again, GM for the win

Did you not read the article, the driver accidently accepted a update and the truck would not start until complete. When the update was done they started it and drove it off the ice.

How many tens of thousands do you think did not read that article and only saw the Moment of great embarrassment for Chevrolet.
What's to say something similar could not happen at Daytona? π€

Why is it that Ford guys have such a hard time reading for comprehension?
Then u show them a fact/article and they still dont believe it. Such denial.
I'd be hesitant too I guess if my brand lied to me constantly. Such suckers they are.

Oh just like the Raptors owns the Chevy 6.2L and the 5.0L beat the 6.2L
Yep, you're in denial. Bye princess!!!
@ drools
U can't come up with your own statement, so, you copy mine and substitute words. Real original. That ford is making u lose brain cells.
@ Frank
Sorry man, no 5.0L or either ebobust has even come close to beating my 6.2L. I have yet to race a Raptor. Only time I've had chance was other night and I had old 5.0L. Atleast my 98 sounded better than that wind up toy noise coming from tailpipe
You know nothing of racing bc my wifes terrain can take down that 9.0 sec junk 5.4L you drive. Dont believe.

@Papajim
Not sure what your personal experience has been with 5.4 triton, mine was great. Had a 2005 F150 that was purchased new drove it without issues for 185,000 miles. I sold it to a friend who continues to drive to this day now has 347,000 miles. Certainly there are those who have had issues, this is true for all brands and engines.
@ FXDX
My stepdad had an 2004 5.4L blew up at 186k and nephew had one with 120k, Cam phasers went, then blew up at 147K.
My father has an 09 with 5.4L and has 92k on that. Hasnt had issues, but he does stay on top of it.
My issue with them: very hard to work on, and they truly are gutless. You step on them and u dont go anywhere.
Here is a good throwback to show just how terribly slow and gutless they are

Sure, and a broken clock is right twice daily. The Tritons have a bad reputation and as a result Ford management dropped the engine from the F150 after about 10 years, and later the from the Expedition.
Go to the forums. GM V8 engines get panned for noisy valve train concerns, but they keep running. Triton engines are universally hated, except by the guys who get paid handsomely to fix 'em.
I'm not talking about the 250 horsepower two valve taxi-cab Modular engines, which only suffered from crappy intake manifolds and cooling-system problems. I'm talking about the 5.4 3 valve motors.

Wow it sounds like your the one that has a problem with this article! name calling and calling out someone that hasn't even posted. go sit on your tailgate, relax, have a beer and look at the picture of the great looking truck in this article.
There has been a whole lot of hoopla concerning the new Silverado's looks, however, there is no denying that the truck pictured above demonstrates what potential this design has. The competition is still producing mainly box shape trucks, although they are more traditional, but a little boring for a new generation of the pick-up truck buyers. What better way for Chevrolet to show case there new truck then at an exciting motor race. With the power of the Chevrolet branding and loyalty, this truck is going to be a winner.
Wouldn't be a riot of Junior forgets and goes hammer down for turn one? With that 6.2 under the hood you never know...
You'd think they would use the 2.7 4 banger, maybe one won't be available? There's a long forming here in Anchorage to buy them.
Hopefully they don't use the ugly 2020 HD truck for any races. It might cause the 400 remaining Nascar fans to leave the track because they're sick.
I have been to Daytona once before. I may have to attend this race just to see this truck.
Daytona 500? Hell yes!
I was there in 1986 when #3 overran his pit stall with just a few laps left and Geoff Bodine went on to the win.
Saw it all from just a few feet away. Back before they had restrictor plates or speed limits on pit row. Those cars sounded like a bunch of P-51s taking off. Bring Nascar back to full house and big excitement you ask?
Yeah. Dump the plates and the pit row speed limits. Won't be an empty seat in the house.
I can't wait for the comparison test to start coming in. The 2019 Silverado will be a game changer. The Ram 1500 will be an after thought. I predict the 2.7 4cyl turbo will get 35 mpg hwy and the whole line up will see a significant increase in mpg thanks to the aero wings integrated into the front bumper/fender. Chevy is truly an innovator. Who else would have the b@lls to put a turbo in a full size truck or innovate with round wheel wells? GAME CHANGER!!
Maybe GM can put the 6.2 in the RST, only makes sense. Right now it is only available on High Country.
Hopefully all the recalls will be done by then..

Oh boy. Both the 2.7 and 3.5 run nearly identical to the 6.2 GM. That is a fact. The 2019 F-150 Limited was recently tested 0-60 and ran 5.1 seconds per Car and Driver. So the Raptor beats the 6.2, the Limited embarrasses the 6.2 , the 2.7,5.0 and 3.5 are anywhere from .1-.3 tenths from the best recorded test and in some cases have beat the 6.2. The only recorded test of the "Game Changer" 2019 6.2 has it slower than all of those engines at 6.0 zero-60. That is more like F-150 3.3 V6 territory. GM did change the game. They made their trucks slower with worse mpg. Good news is they didn't screw up the carry over interior.
I told you no posting on this site!! Get back in the bed...
@ papa et al
ALL of the Ford modular βTritonβ and V10s are pretty bad
Long stroke, small bore, garbage design that dates to the 80s when Ford was going to FWD cars across the board.
The 4.6 2V is the most reliable, but absolutely gutless.
The 2V 5.4 and V10 are the worst.
From 1991 to present, the modular program has been throwing good money after bad.
The 3v heads only made them competitive.
The 5.0 coyote and 6.2 have a much larger bore and revised design which makes them superior in EVERY aspect.
Just like Big Oldsmobile V8s the Ford modular garbage are slow to rev, get terrible fuel mileage, and produce far less HP than an engine with a larger bore of the same displacement.
4.6 vs 4.8 GM, 5.4 Triton vs 5.3 GM.
@ fake papajim clown who ruins this site
Car and driver just tested a Silverado high country that sprinted 0-60 in 5.4 secs and did the quarter mile at 13.9 @ 100mph
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2019-chevy-silverado-pickup-high-country-by-the-numbers
Your also bragging about 2 twin turbo V6. U need 2 of them to keep up to a N/A motor
And the 5.0L in 4 wheel drive configuration is at 5.9 secs
