Chevrolet Lifts the Cover on the 2020 Silverado HDs

Hot on the heels of Chevrolet's completely redesigned 2019 Silverado 1500 pickup truck, the automaker has unveiled the next biggest model in its full-size lineup. The new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 was shown to a select group of journalists in November during the launch drive of the new 2019 Silverado 1500 turbo 2.7-liter in Scottsdale, Ariz., but we were sworn to secrecy about the huge new three-quarter-ton rig. Now GM has lifted the vow of silence, and we can show you the goods, and man, is it something else.

Here is one of the most boldly styled new trucks to come along since ... well, since the new 2019 Silverado 1500 appeared with its polarizing looks. The HD is physically bigger than the half-ton truck and looks absolutely nothing like it. The two trucks get completely different sheet metal with only the roof panel common to both half-ton and 2500/3500 models. Parked next to each other, as I saw them last month in Arizona, the new HD dwarfs the standard Silverado in practically every way — it's an absolute monster of a pickup truck.

Chevrolet says that the cab shares the same kind of improvements as the light-duty model does, with 3 inches more legroom for passengers and a taller, more upright driving position. The high bed can be accessed by a novel new integrated side step that's fitted to the forward part of the bedside. We weren't allowed to try it (the truck we saw was a clay model and we weren't allowed to even breathe on it too hard, lest it break), but it seems like a simpler way to get into the bed from the side of the truck without using the tire as a step.

Under the hood will be a choice of two new powertrains, according to Chevrolet. Standard will be an all-new gasoline V-8 with direct injection mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the optional powertrain will be the turbo-diesel Duramax V-8 engine mated to a new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. The only number Chevrolet has provided to us regarding these powertrains is 910 pounds-feet — the torque rating for the turbo-diesel Duramax engine. All other numbers like engine displacement, horsepower, gear ratios, towing rating, payload, fuel economy and more will have to wait until the truck's official full launch, which we're expecting sometime in early February 2019.

Chevy will be making the new Silverado 2500/3500 at its truck plant in Flint, Mich., and says that sales will begin in mid-2019. Check out the photo gallery below and check back here in a couple of months for the full launch of the new Silverado HD.

I, for one, really liked the new 1500 the day it came out.

The snout on this one is gonna take some time to appreciate.

Other than the grill & headlights, it seems proportioned better than the outgoing model. The greenhouse of the current model always seemed to small for the body, and the wheel well accents overdone.

Maybe it will be like the Cherokee, better in person and just not photogenic.

Impressive!

Dear lord this looks terrible!

OMG, that grill!! Hideous.

No doubt inspired by the same stuff that the 2015 F150 design team was smoking, i.e., the tombstone grille.

That's not the name of a steak house in Arizona, it's a front-end on the 2015 Ford that was plumb ugly. Now this.

GM did a decent job of fixing the kisser on the last gen Silverado but this new one is ugly-sister homely. Sorry.

WOW, its almost like the design team was given marching orders to achieve the impossible...design the ugliest possible front end...and well, they have achieved it!

Oh well, there is always the next generation Silverado HD...it is hard to imagine that it could look worse.

It has the same turn signal over droopy headlights that made the 2nd gen Super Duty look like a sad puppy dog.

What's this? Another man-step? Did GM think we forgot about their terrible Howie Long ads bashing the F-150?

Can't decide on 3 hideous designs? Let's combine them to create the most god awful ugly front end of all times.
A man-step is bad? Then let's add 4 to our bed to be quadruple bad. This is embarrassing design for an American truck company.

I hope these come with a 'glasses and nose disguise' so anyone driving in this ugly thing be incognito.

Side view looks good,
front lights and bumper looks a little Stupid Duty
dress up Chevy, put on the Bow Tie

I will judge it when i see it in person...it does command presence though!! People are gonna need a bigger garage.

Kudos to GM for thinking outside the box and making it look totally different than previous gens. Unlike Ford's design which has been pretty much same in their SD lineup since 2002!

Hopefully they have a 7 liter gas engine? 450Hp?? We can only hope.

This truck looks like it was drinking water downstream from a nuclear power plant.
It looks like that girl in high school with the smoking hot body but her face looked like her Aunt Myrtle....that was from down stream of a nuclear power plant.

THe body looks good, lines are great! Grille looks good! Front bumper looks good! Headlights and markers are deformed looking. Swamp Thing looking. Toxic Avenger looking.

It's like one of those "reality" cooking shows where they say "you have 1 minute" . The thing would have looked nice if they could have finished the face.

Beer goggles required.

Introducing the future HD 2500/3500 series comparison winner. Silverado HD.

What idiot said something about a 7L? He must be brain dead, as it’s known a 6.6L has V-8 will be replacing the weak 6.0L for this ugly champion.

Oh right, it was that illiterate little twerp TNTGMC. One of the most idiotic, if not the most, posters on this site.

@ fake papajim

Again the imposter gets all upset bc i mention a 7 liter. Its not a known fact that they have a 6.6L. If they do please share the site id live to read about it?!?

Please calm down, relax, get your preparation H ouy, aplly it thoroughly and drink some coffee

Btw...stop using others names u coward. So disrespectful!

Ugly trucks sell good, just look at fords sales the last 50 years

Now back on topic. I love how GM incorporated the side step on the feont of the box. Extremely useful. Plus will also cut down on road debris...rock chips in that area where precious previous models rusted out. I see tons of models, of all manufacturers rustung out right there bc of road debris. Great innovation GM.

Fix the grill and they's have a fantastic looking truck.

@TNTGMC,

You think this looks good? Now I know you're a spineless GM shill that will polish the knob for GM no matter how much excrement is on the tip.

I see a RUSHED front fascia "refresh" (more like repair). And yea it needs it. Big misstep for chevy. Between the 3/4 ton front and half ton's not so high country interior they got some midcycle repairs to do.

Titan and Tundra are thrilled to no longer be the ugly girls at the dance. Thanks Chevy.

I would like to see the side step copied.

The rest is easily left.

Did GM bring back the Pontiac Aztek? What is this caca stuff.

and yes GovMotorsR is certainly a GM knob polisher. Beyond the step this is a train wreck in styling. And while styling a subjective topic its true this will not be well received and you know it. On top of that Ford solved ALL bed corner corrosion concerns on 3/4 tons in 2017 (late again chevy) and in half tons even longer ago.

The bed step is a good idea and should be copied. Give chevy a golf clap for being not 2nd or 3rd at something for once.

High Displacement Gasoline V8

According to sources familiar with the automaker’s plans, the 2020 model year heavy duty GM trucks will utilize a new gasoline V8 engine displacing 6.6 liters. The motor will make around 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque – representing notable improvements of 40 horsepower and 70 pound-feet of torque – over the Vortec 6.0L V8 L96 that currently serves as the base engine in the current Silverado HD and Sierra HD.

Did GM bring back the Pontiac Aztek? Posted by: Frank

@Frank

Can you be serious for a minute! Don't you drive a Ford with theTriton 5.4 engine?

A face only a mother could love.....

I actually like this truck's style. Has a nice burly presence like the Super Duty. Chevy's finally starting to design some attractive wheels as well. It's a lot more attractive than the weird half-ton for sure.

GM desperately needs new designers. That grill with the word
" Chevrolet " is about as ugly as it gets.

Someone's been watching a lot of Sharknado movies. The really
sad part is that someone in corporate approved it. The rest of
the trucks lines are terrific. And the side steps are a great idea.
Now, if only they'd lose that torsion bar suspension, ditch the
grill and round off the wheel wells, they'd have a kick butt truck.

That whole front end is hard to look at ..... New V8 and also a 10-speed Allison with the Duramax sounds good.

Only the front end looks wack. Just like the Super Duty front end also looks wack. The Ram HD front eng looks like except for the rebel pig nose grille that looks wack too.

The truck looks mostly ok but that front end almost makes the Aztec front end look good!!! LMFAO!

Hey Frank i think papajim would like to buy your truck, he never misses an opportunity to bring it up, he might secretly wish you would sell it to him.....

The only thing papajim would want to do with a boat anchor is to tie Frank to it. HAHAHA!

The jealousy among the Ford clan is palpable. Don't know why they are so worked up about the front end as they are only ever going to see the taillights on this rig. HAHAHA!

Is tying up other guys a gm-fan thing? Dosent sound right....

Dang, I had hoped they fired the designers and hired someone who could design a decent looking truck. Or at least one not so hideous. GM, it used to be your trucks were nice looking even though they spent way too much time in the shop. Now they're ugly to boot.

Plenty of room for Clark and Ellen up front, with Audrey and Rusty in the back seats. The bed is long enough for me and Catherine too!

@GMSRGREAT

Jealousy from Ford fans?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!...............HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......you're a complete tool.

You must have Michael Jackson on your mind again...... Anyhow, we all know where boat anchors go. And there is lots of that surrounding Florida's coastline.

@ budgsy47

Thanks for the link. Good read!

I never said i liked the front end. I said id pass jugdment when i see it in person.

So the imposter gmsrgreat needs to get a life and b@lls! Along with her own user name.

I'm gonna call it right now. This truck will be a game changer!!

The new front end is polarizing for sure. Will be interesting to see what the GMC front end will look like. I can't help thinking the big sales winner of this design will be RAM.

I'll continue driving what [in my mind] is Chevy's last aesthetically pleasing design - 2002 Chevy 2500 HD

@ clant

Seek help....or save that money and buy a gm 6.2L engine. Its the best therapy that money can buy. The performance, sound, and FE are awesome. Will put a smile on your face

As foe orhers wanting to use my name? Well heck, id want to too, if they knew i drove a 6.2L. Duh!!

Good day "clown @$$"

@ imposter. Wanting to be like the true tntgmc

The new gmc is a game changer. It just beat all 4 teucks in putc comparison. Gm has proved that there v8s get better or as good FE as any other manufacturer.

Tfl just did comparison out of all 3 off road trucks. And the chevy gor best FE out of them all.

So yes, its a game changer

And the HD will even further the gap between it and the competition

Good day to u also. Fake TNT.....lol!!

Dont worry ford will. Copy GMs tailgate and then u will brag about that as well......lmfao.
