Chevrolet Lifts the Cover on the 2020 Silverado HDs

Hot on the heels of Chevrolet's completely redesigned 2019 Silverado 1500 pickup truck, the automaker has unveiled the next biggest model in its full-size lineup. The new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 was shown to a select group of journalists in November during the launch drive of the new 2019 Silverado 1500 turbo 2.7-liter in Scottsdale, Ariz., but we were sworn to secrecy about the huge new three-quarter-ton rig. Now GM has lifted the vow of silence, and we can show you the goods, and man, is it something else.

Here is one of the most boldly styled new trucks to come along since ... well, since the new 2019 Silverado 1500 appeared with its polarizing looks. The HD is physically bigger than the half-ton truck and looks absolutely nothing like it. The two trucks get completely different sheet metal with only the roof panel common to both half-ton and 2500/3500 models. Parked next to each other, as I saw them last month in Arizona, the new HD dwarfs the standard Silverado in practically every way — it's an absolute monster of a pickup truck.

Chevrolet says that the cab shares the same kind of improvements as the light-duty model does, with 3 inches more legroom for passengers and a taller, more upright driving position. The high bed can be accessed by a novel new integrated side step that's fitted to the forward part of the bedside. We weren't allowed to try it (the truck we saw was a clay model and we weren't allowed to even breathe on it too hard, lest it break), but it seems like a simpler way to get into the bed from the side of the truck without using the tire as a step.

Under the hood will be a choice of two new powertrains, according to Chevrolet. Standard will be an all-new gasoline V-8 with direct injection mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the optional powertrain will be the turbo-diesel Duramax V-8 engine mated to a new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. The only number Chevrolet has provided to us regarding these powertrains is 910 pounds-feet — the torque rating for the turbo-diesel Duramax engine. All other numbers like engine displacement, horsepower, gear ratios, towing rating, payload, fuel economy and more will have to wait until the truck's official full launch, which we're expecting sometime in early February 2019.

Chevy will be making the new Silverado 2500/3500 at its truck plant in Flint, Mich., and says that sales will begin in mid-2019. Check out the photo gallery below and check back here in a couple of months for the full launch of the new Silverado HD.

The front end view alone will drive people to HD Ram and to a lesser degree SD Ford. Damm GM had an opportunity and puked up this? I’m willing to bet the GMC will be much better. I get it beauty is in the eye of the beholder but damm GM I’ve seen much nicer front ends from you over the years.

Looks like a big Isuzu viacross in the front. I barfed just seeing for the first time.

@ TNTGMC

So you still think there’ll be some mythical 7.0L?

Moron.

Actually, with those ridiculous headlights, it reminds me of the Griswold Family Truckster.

This truck actually looks excellent from behind the front end. But that front end? Are you serious? I would hope the designer was 1 of the 14,000 recently let go. Wow. There is nothing to like about that face. It's a true butter face.......

This truck will drive GM to yearly sales reporting.

To be fair most of these trucks will have grill guards on them within a couple days of purchase.

Why GM staff was approved for ugly front grill and headlight? GM did wait for 20 year later from Ford did made separate F250 from F150 in 1998 as 99. GM very waste time and Ram too.

This is the truck that my company will be buying 150 copies of. We are done with the Fords always down for repairs.

I agree with many here

Before even reading the comments I thought GM copied the 2015 F-150 front end.

Can't beat em? Join them

LOL

GovMSRnowUgly is the ultimate spin Dr. When you say game changer you mean like when GM went under the first time and doing it again? Just wanna be certain because they did go under once and honestly are very much on the road to do it again. Last time they went under it was without the trucks being ugly.

I had a PSG working for me who in his civilian capacity worked for a vinyl manufacturer. He explained that the company he worked for sold vinyl to all 3 of big 3 (back in the early 2000s), and that Ford bought their highest grade/most expensive product, Chrysler/Jeep the middle and GM their lowest/cheapest products. John Deere was another client too who bought expensive yellow vinyl for the seats. He also explained that he and several others had been invited by GM to visit the plant that made the Pontiac Aztek (they were providing the vinyl) and that while there the GM management staff at plant desperately asked him and the assoicates he had come with "why the Aztek wasn't selling." My PSG and his company answered simply that it was a very ugly car and the GM personnel just seemed disappointed.

I'm sure old GovM couldn't see or tell it straight then either.

The vitriol is so exhausting to wade through to find reasonable comments. It's an incredibly bold front clip. The engines and transmission sound awesome. The interiors still fall flat, as seems to be the rule.

ExplosiveGMC. Seek help... again... probably more government help. I don't need a primitive 6.2 in a bailout mobile. Fords modern V6 3.5EB outsells it EVERY day of the year with a nicer mid grade interior than high country, and Fiat makes a nicer alternative as well. AND don't forget the HO 3.5EB SMOKES the geriatric/bariatric 6.2 and is now available in the top trim F150 (not just the raptor). Remember even Honda builds a better GM than GM...

I was hoping this was an April Fool's joke. GM, please put the camo back on.

It's looks like a rendition of the family truckster in National Lampoon's Vacation.

What's the deal with those fruity wheels?

The front grill design looks like something ripped off from a 3rd world company building propane powered forklifts and having no awareness of aesthetic design.

My company will be buying 300 Super Duty's because they are tired of the unreliable Silverado HD's always breaking. Dang, Chevy just lost again......LMBFAO. #hoodwink

This truck reminds me of my old neighbor lady. She would walk down thru the yard to the neighbor below my house to swim in their pool. She had a body that wowed everyone. Then she would smile and show what was left of her rotted teeth. YIKES!!

Guys, get a grip. This is an HD, it's not supposed to be as pretty as the half ton or midsize because it's doing a heck of a lot more work. They aren't marketing it as a "lifestyle adventure thing". YES, I think the front grill is not going to win a good looks prize, but hey, it's supposed to do a ton of work like a semi I suppose. The side step looks really useful. I thought it pulled down, but it is permanent, and so real useful for very quickly getting to things in the back. A good use of previously unused space. A side step would be useful in all these 1/2 and midsize versions. Have fun...

Some of these comments are funny. Jealous fanboys.
It might be hideous in person or it might not be.....beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What matters is that it will win another HD comparison test like it has for many years here in performance. Chalk up another win for GM

That's a fake Old GM Guy. My company owns a variety of GM, Ford and Ram! For the record, no one truck is better than the other, I just prefer the Chevy.....or did.

@ clint

Are u frank in sheeps clothing?

Are u sure the HO3.5 beats the 6.2l. Do we have performance specs or a full comparison on it yet? No we dont...and dont use the raptor bc its tuned for strickly performance....

Plus, its only taken ford 8 years to try and beatthe 6.2L. Talk a out being late and having no answer.

U talk alot of smack....u should be in the next ford commercial.

Over 2 years ago I wrote to GM about making a step in the side of the box, I even received an email from the R&D department saying thank you for the interest in their truck products and that the step was forth coming along with some future innovations. Did they listen...looks like it. Was surprised they even answered although it was a few weeks later. That said I often wonder why if another brand has something good why not add it to their line also...just makes a better product all around.

Dude, if a stock Chevy 6.2L can't beat a Raptor on 35s inch tires, then that shows where the 6.2L stands. You're ignorant.

Ford, actually isn't worried about beating anything. Ford sells more equipped 3.5L V6 than your Unicorn 6.2L V8

GTFO!!

@ frank

Hey dude....your not too bright. GM does notnhave the 6.2L spec for performance in their have tons. Yea, they can hauls @$$ but they are tuned for overall performance.
A Raptor is tuned specifically for high performance. Your an absolute clown bc u dont realize the difference. Good day to u !d!ot!!

C'mon TNTGMC(in blue)…, Why are you defending the slower "shivvy-shaker"???
You can't twist those facts over at TFL...
Nice post Frank...

It's not that I am not too bright, it's that you're very ignorant you'll never agree with anyone due to your blissful ignorance.

What an idiot! You should kill yourself.

Frank..., Proving somebody wrong or calling them out is one thing, but please, keep it civil..., for all of us here...

When this truck rolls into the work side a sound track will be playing, "Now you're mess'in with a ..... SOB.

Truck looks pretty good except for the ugly front end. It looks like a 2007 Chevy Colorado on steroids. I always hated the goofy front end on those trucks. It looks like GM is trying too hard to create something totally different for their new vehicles, but unfortunately, many of the new designs (mainly the front ends- Silverado, Camaro, etc.) look really bad IMO. I am afraid the new GM design team is going to make the current good looking Colorado bad looking too when it is refreshed in 2020. I wonder how much the new GM Design Chief Michael Simcoe has on these vehicles (I assume quite a bit).

Wow. After a hard day at work I check out this site and my first though is this things already been wrecked. What a hideous looking piece of scrap. Makes my day at work look really good.

TNTGMC(in blue)…, Earlier, I gave you a jab b/c I wanted to measure how you would respond. It wasn't baiting you..., I just wanted to encourage you to refrain from using the words idiot, clown...,etc..., toward others. Sorry to you my friend.

@ frank and lawn ranger

No Frank u truly are hopeless and when your wrong u tell people to kill themselves bc its a defense mechanism for your securities!

As for lawn ranger. Frank and his other user name Clint are both clowns. Stop acting like u dont see their posts. U relax and if u wanna call out people....start calling out everyone

Good day to u!

Btw...on tropic since all these ford guys go off topic....this trucks front end reminds me of big rig trucks. Pulling machines....wonder if thats what designers were cueing on?

We need an contest to pick the best name ala shades of Boaty McBoatface.

I vote for Chainy McChainLinkFenceFace.

I could tolerate the Front-End to an extent, if I were to purchase this truck, I would at least have to change out the bottom half of the headlights for some aftermarket smoked headlights.

FCA might be sending a Christmas card and Thank You note to GM for the new front on this new Chevy HD Silverado. This will definitely help Ram HD sales. The new half ton Silverado front will also help Ram half ton sales. Chevy should have gone with a front on the Silverado like the Colorado's.

I'm sorry I post LOL so much. It's a nervous tick I've had since childhood. Too much time spent blowing seniors in the bathroom LOL. I also can't seem to get all my thoughts out in a normal amount of time so I have to post 6 times in a row. Mom said I would grow out of it. She was a lying slut.

@papajim--You might be insulting Isuzu. This f ront might be uglier than the Isuzu Viacross or even the Pontiac Aztec. It definitely was beat with the ugly stick. My guess is GM was trying to imitate the F-250s and above which in that case they succeeded.

Get rid of every part of that grille above the name tag. That would help the looks a lot. Angling the hood down to fill that space and lower the overall grille height would also improve fuel economy.

Geez they should put the cover back over until they fix that front end. What was wrong with the last front end? Or the one before that? They werent that bad i think.

@ TNTGMC...So you still think there’ll be some mythical 7.0L?

TWO POSTS WITHIN MOMENTS OF EACH OTHER USING ANOTHER COMMENTER'S ID. LAME. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

@oapaDiM
Returd, go and trull on another site.

I really don't give a dumn what you think, simply because you can't think other than causing mayhem on blog sites.

You're a trull, pizz off and go to another site.

Can't wait to see the GMC version. In the mean time this pu is ugly.

I heard Sponge Bob was the official mascot for the new 2020 Chevy HD.

Mary Barra told them to make it ugly so they can sell more GMCs. Evil Corporate Shills.

You go girl...
