Returning 2019 Ford Ranger Takes on Top-Selling 2018 Toyota Tacoma: Video

06-2018-tacoma-2019-ranger-group copy A

It's not good enough anymore to simply bring another player to an automotive class that does the same things all the other competitors have been doing for years. You must have unique selling points: At minimum you need to do several things better than the rest, and you must do things that no other vehicle in the class is doing. At least, that's the template we've noticed for a successful vehicle launch or re-launch, as the case may be.

Related: We Pit the 2019 Ford Ranger Against the 2018 Toyota Tacoma in a Real-World Test

Case in point: Some may argue Ford has an advantage bringing the 2019 Ranger back to the mid-size pickup class, mainly because Ford has been evolving and improving the existing global Ranger — quite popular in places like Australia — all over the rest of world even though the Ranger left the U.S. market in 2011.

We decided to see how the new Ranger stacks up to one of its competitors. It seemed natural to put a fully loaded 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat with the FX4 Off-Road Package up against the best-selling mid-size player, the 2018 Toyota Tacoma. Our challenge for this head-to-head contest was to select the most comparable Tacoma trim level. We eventually settled on the mid-level TRD Sport 4x4, which meant it didn't have Crawl Control or the more well-appointed interior details of the Limited, TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport. Still, all the major mechanical comparison points were there: suspension, bed, powertrain, four-wheel drive system, etc.

In the video below, PickupTrucks.com Editor Mark Williams and Cars.com Los Angeles Bureau Chief Brian Wong share their opinions about the two mid-size pickups after spending three days with the trucks in Southern California traversing mountain roads, playing at an off-road park and driving in some of the toughest city and highway traffic Los Angeles to Barstow has to offer.

We know this video is a little longer than usual, but we thought you'd want to hear as much as possible about these pickups. Some of the observations will seem logical, while others might catch you by surprise. No matter how you react, there's plenty to digest here and we'll have more to say about how the Ranger matches up to other mid-size pickups when we have the opportunity for a full apples-to-apples comparison test. More to come.

Papajim's relatives may have sold a used Toyota Corolla or two but they didn't in fact sell any new Hondas. That appears to be one of reasons papajim hates the Tacoma and hates Hondas. The Ranger might be the better truck in the mid size category, but it will in fact take Ford many years to sell more Rangers than Toyota and Honda sell Tacomas and Ridgeline combined.

Please translate the above into English. Thank you in advance.

Jeff sems to act like Asian trucks are superior to Fords and maybe that is because he bought an Izuzu and his wife bought a Honda from car businesses didn't sell Fords.

@Keith - that could be it Keith or maybe Jeff can actually read and he read some of the reviews posted above (there are many, many, more where those came from). But speaking about buying cars...does Ford still build those military grade Fiesta's or the really hot Taurus?...lol...oh sorry I forgot, they ran away from that market like little school girls...heeeeheeeee

Or maybe Jeff saw this video....

Keith those gas fumes from your Ford Expoder are really impacting your judgement!

No one wants a junk Ford! 1 wheel base, 1 motor, 3 cheapo trims! The new Jeep will outsell then junk!

and maybe that is because he (Jeff S) bought an Izuzu and his wife bought a Honda from car businesses didn't sell Fords.
Posted by: Keith | Dec 30, 2018

@Keith

Actually Keith it's worse than that. He bought one of the Gen-1 Chevy Colorado's that was re-badged as an Isuzu. This was back when GM owned a big chunk of Isuzu so there was nothing Isuzu could do about it.

The Gen-1 Colorado was a real disaster, both on the road and in the showroom.

They were even worse in the garage. Jeff bought one of the few Isuzu pickups with the Atlas 5-cylinder engines if I remember correctly. GM made Atlas engines with 4, 5 and 6 cylinders and the only one worth having was the four cylinder, not that it was any big deal either.

Jeff says his Isuzu runs great and has been a good truck. The president of GM should take a picture of it and frame it.

@papajim - remember what it says in Psalm 103:15-85
"Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares?... He’s a mile away and you’ve got his shoes"

Not me.

No second-hand shoes (or hats, for that matter). Not much on walking a mile either, especially if there's a V8 Silverado or Sierra handy.

Just for fun, I thought I would take a look at consumer reports to see just how reliable the Toyota Tacoma is according to their data. Turns out the Tacoma's reliability was rated worse than average for 2016 and 2017, and then much worse than average for 2018. Not only that, but the Tacoma also scored the worst in the small truck category in CR's battery of tests scoring 39 points. For comparison, the Colorado scored 51 points (no data on Ranger yet).

@papajim
Strangely no, it only as Off Road equipment suppliers, it is not the only publication that rates the Hilux above the considerable completion in Australia

@papajim
What may spice it up? how about a range of body styles and engines that would be a good start

@Robert R

Before replying to comments I usually review the facts.

In this case I went to the 4x4 website. My comment still stands. If they take ad revenue from vendors---which is fine---it affects their ability to be objective about "reviewing" that vendor's product.

I've worked for publishers before and I've answered to their editors and ad managers. They can be very persuasive.

@papajim
You making it up, which I think you are? How can you get that from their website? When it was was a runoff of various manufacturers Pickups? I thought you were not one of the raving loonies, but your acting like it

how about a range of body styles and engines that would be a good start

@robert r

My reading tells me that Ford will offer the Ranger in SuperCab and CrewCab body styles---how much variety do you expect? The Ranger's engine choices are VERY much like the color choices offered by the old man Henry Ford himself. Exactly ONE

Fortunately for Ford fans, the 2.3 turbo/10 speed should manage most people's needs sufficiently, don't you think?

With any luck there's probably a small diesel in the Ranger's future but when you consider how few people buy Colorado/Canyon diesels, and when you consider that Ford is preparing to offer a small diesel in the F150, there is probably going to be a little time for Ford execs to stick their toe in the water and make sure they really want to bear the extra expense of putting a diesel in the Ranger for the sake of the 5 or 6 % of buyers who will even check that box. Especially when diesel is present almost a buck more than unleaded in my region.

You sound like you're drunk. Consider giving up the sauce for a short while. It works wonders.

@papajim
You obviously did not see the website, raving looney material there.
Hilux is the biggest seller and the choice as an off road vehicle.
Now the surprise is what they picked as well

You drink that awful stuff the Brits call beer, right?

No, obviously you cannot read,

I hear that Rob is drunk posting again.

Papajim won every point in this post hands down.

Now I remember why I quit posting on this site several years ago. To many people using your name. I only posted once on here today but now it looks like i've posted several times. What a bunch of losers. I'm gone again.

@ Tailgate

It’s those GM clowns like papajim, GMSRGREAT, uh huh, johnny doe, and TNTGMC.

They’ve ruined this site.

@Robert Ryan--Papajim doesn't care about Global sales since the rest of the World is foreigners. Papajim only considers red states as part of the US. Build a wall around the red states and deport all those who don't agree with everything papa says and believes. The rest of the World is a bunch of free loading liberals whose opinions don't matter.

the FAKE Jeff S strikes again. They must have finished shearing the sheep a little early today. Happy New Year BAFO!

@papajim - your right we just finished shearing the sheep, and your mom is looking great! Come over an pick her up...she due for another shearing in 3 months!

References to Paper Airplane Romances, stealing someone's shoes, Bible references....Honda and Toyota reliability. Wow this one really takes the cake.

I went to a pilot's Christmas party, at one of the local schools I frequent for rental's, and for fun they had a paper airplane contest. I lost but I won the raffle for a free one hour flight in their Cessna172. I'm thinking to use it for my training upgrade in their 1980 Turbo Piper Arrow 4 later this 2019. (200hp, 360cu in, ie 160mph cruise, retractable gear, variable pitch prop). I've been flying a "vanilla" C172 for too long. The party was in an unheated cold hanger, but one young attractive lady had a classy backless dress on so I wasn't complaining whatsoever. Funny the last pilot gathering I was at was at the introduction of the Cirrus single engine jet. Food was better, much bigger hanger with a Golfstream 650 at the back of cold hanger. And, unfortunately, no backless dressed lady's.

The suspense is killing me on the 2018 sales #'s.

papajim, That was the real Jeff s

@ Brawndo

Happy new year to you. I have one username. I think u need to look into others that mess up the site. Stop being such an angry person. Is it because your truck's always broken down? Cheer up...its almost the new year, u can get a great deal on a new one. All of the big 3 are offering huge incentives on 2018s and even 2019s for the Ram's.

@TNTGMC, I agree with your point about heavily discounted trucks, surprising to me though is the 2019 Ram...a very quick search in my area showed that I can get $15k off sticker! Ram is really going all_out for market share! No new truck for me though, will be holding on to my 2015 for a few more years.

@Tony

and you would know that (how?).

There are two people who know for sure: the REAL Jeff S and the faker. Would you be one of those?

No I can just tell by the style and his politics. He told me almost the same thing years ago. Happy New Years

A wild guess.

I'm the fake Jeff. That wasn't me.

Jeff S, I hate to tell you, but you are a liberal.

Jeff, Hate? Red States? Wall? Just because papajim doesn't prefer Asian trucks like you do doesn't mean you have to attack him personally and say he is a redneck. What is you liberals' problem with the wall? Do you like drugs, crime and rapists? Or us it just because the Prez us for a wall now and you are against it out if spite?

Jeff S is a liberal idiot!

I like to take a minute and wish everyone a Happy New Year, even the Ford guys.

Oh TNTGMC. Your spelling mistake of “ you’re “ is your give away.

Good one bonehead. I cross my fingers your parents aren’t wasting more money on another year in college for you.

@Brawndo - you got me, "your" so smart! I realize that I overreacted last night, and I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am. The truth is, I can't picture my life without Brawndo. When you walk into the room, my heart beats a little faster. When I hear your voice, I melt a little inside. And when I see your sweet face, Brawndo know that you are my one true love. When you take me in your arms, it feels like coming home to the only place I belong. Please forgive me and let me make it up to you tonight.

@ Brawndo

Again, why so angry? I'm not on this site for a grammar lesson and I sure the heck don't want to try and seek advice from someone who is so bitter all the time. Seriously, find something peaceful in your life...it's way to short, especially for someone with anger issues like yourself.

@ imposter tntgmc

Its almost the new year. Grow a pair of b@!!s and get your own username and stop tainting the site. Your buddy Brawndo talks smack about GM guys doing it, but Im thinking he should be looking at YOU! Have a great new year's eve and again, make a resolution to find, come up with your own name.
