What to Expect at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show

IMG_8384 II

We're headed to the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which opens to the public Jan. 19. It's the last time we'll attend the Detroit auto show in the winter because show organizers have changed things up; the 2020 show will take place in June and promises many changes beyond timing.

One consequence of moving the show is that several automakers — namely most of the German brands — have decided to skip Detroit this year and wait to make a bigger splash when the show returns in 18 months. That means we'll have two Chicago, New York and Work Truck shows before we see our next Detroit auto show. And just because Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and BMW will not be at the show, it doesn't there won't be automotive news. Besides, none of those brands make a pickup truck. But Ram does and the truckmaker will be showcasing the all-new 2019 Ram 2500 and 3500 models in Detroit. No doubt many of the investments in engineering, design and powertrains that we saw with the introduction of the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 in 2018 will carry over in some form to the heavy-duty lineup. We'll know more by Monday morning when the trucks debut.

Beyond the Ram HD reveal, the Detroit auto show may hold a few smaller surprises. We'll be on the show floor Monday and Tuesday to cover it all and pass along as soon as we can.

The auto show will be open to the public Jan. 19 to 27 at Detroit's Cobo Center, 1 Washington Blvd. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 19 through Jan. 26 and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 27. Admission is $14 for adults, $7 for senior citizens 65 or older and children ages 7-12, and free for kids 6 or younger with a parent or guardian. For more info, go to the show's website.

With extreme liberals taking over and starting to seek the green new deal, trucks will be banned less needed for business, farm or pay a heavy tax to drive a truck by 2030 ish.

No more oil and gas folks, plus more illegals coming in and when automation and AI take over and millions of jobs are lost, the illegals will still be here and we will be still paying for them called welfare.

The future is not good for trucks period!

Hmmm, what?

@oxi

I am worried about the green new deal as well. I am not sure where the $60 trillion to fund it would come from (hint, they can't actually pay for it), but some supporters tell us that it doesn't matter because it is just too important. I think we are absolutely doomed as a country if this thing ever passes as it is currently proposed. As far as the illegals, I certainly don't blame them, and it is becoming pretty clear that we are never going to do anything meaningful to get that under control...it wouldn't be a bad idea for people to really contemplate which groups of people are harmed most by illegal immigration and which groups are helped (in the long term though, it harms all of us because we simply can't afford it).

I'm fully expecting Ram to own this one with the intro of the
HD models.
Specifically, the 2500 with the new 8 speed ZF auto tranny
coupled to the new undated 6.7L Cummins with CGI block, steel
Mahler pistons, a power bump to 410 hp and 930 lbs of torque.
The 3500.4500/5500 keeos the Aisin auto but power is
thisclose to the magic 500/1000 ratins.

But it's the 2500 with the new hardware that will garner the most
number of oooohs and aaaahs....

I'm also hearing the new Cummins may do away with the particle trap but still keep the DEF....We'll soon find out.

And don't worry about the radical left jamming their psycho-green
agenda down America's throat. Won't happen. Besides, take a
look at who's in the White House. Think he's gonna kill the
country? Won't happen.

@richardny66 Interesting points on the new Ram HD's...should be very competitive, especially now that it will be getting more or less the 1500 interior. I prefer the exterior looks of the current HD ram (looks like they are keeping current look with just a small makeover) vs the new 1500 anyway.

Not too worried about the green new deal for now, but what about two years from now? We could easily end up with not just a left, but a far left President next time.

Not going to happen. There are too many red states to elect enough radicals to take over both Houses. Any President who is to much too the left will be deadlocked. As for the current President we will see what happens. We as a country are in more danger of going the the radical right than the radical left. Too many religious right to make that happen. The religious right are the ones that go out and vote and most of the liberals complain but do not vote. We are more in danger of becoming a dictatorship than a socialist country. Some where in between extremes would be safer but I don't see that happen.

The young rely and live their lives online and they are becoming a bigger part of the voting block, just look at how the d um b Cortez lady got in that is pushing this new green deal. She is now on the banking committee with that other d i m w i t Maxine Waters.

The Mayor of New Your City just stated in his address that wealth needs to be redistributed from those that have it to the working class and ill egals. C mon the soft rev olution is beginning and those that control information will be the victors. Hint: as they seek to take down T rump even with the government shutdown, they do not care on the left.

What this means is no more pickup trucks less you need it for business or farm or pay a hefty tax to keep them on the road because you have to pay for the carbon footprint and pay for those that are the have nots, in other words they can sit there and pop out kids and not make one effort to improve their lives because you will be doing it for them, called over taxation!

Trucks are doomed, enjoy them before they force them off the road in the coming decade. This site needs to address this and advocate for a strong and robust pickup truck industry or we are doomed!

Trucks are not doomed. There would be a major riot if the Government did that. Many younger people believe that politics are dirty and they don't want any part of it. The strongest voting group are the religious right and seniors. All a liberal candidate has to do is bring up ProChoice and transgender rights (i.e. the right for anyone who claims they are transgender to use any bathroom they want. Also bring up that certain types of guns should be outlawed. Those things are enough to get the religious right, gun owners, and many older groups lined up to vote. These groups would literally be knocking down the doors to vote conservatives in office to oppose these liberals. Even if some liberals are elected there will be enough votes to block most of what they propose. There would be major gridlock and little done in Congress. Trucks are in less danger of being legislated out of existence than being priced out of the reach of the average Joe. There are only so much people can pay per month and only so long you can extend a loan. A 96 month loan or even a 60 month loan are becoming more common. I am not too worried about trucks being legislative out of existence.

We are NOT going to lose our trucks, our guns and are freedom
of speech. Too many cemeteries filled up with enough hero's to
ensure that. The left will swing from a tree before that happens.
Long live the diesel......Cummins will see to that...…

Oxi, fear not-the American pickup will be around LONG after these
half-a-commies are sent packing.

Hopefully GM comes out with details on the 3L diesel - release date, cost, and official specs.

@Jeff S

Hurry Jeff. 60 Minutes is on! Don't miss it.

One thing you wont see is papajim, or happy GM fans. Since GM is falling way behind Ram now, forget about Ford, can you say unreachable? Come on GM wake up, we are losong bad even papjim cant save us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@TNT- shut your trap, you need to leave, eveyone is tired of your lack of knowledge and childish comments.

I second that papajim, evem Big Al would agree

@ Oxi
Last thing that the US Automotive industry needs is a downturn in the Economy, then that is going to put more pressure on the struggling " Big 2" as well as Fiat RAM

Oxi is right. Jeff S is a statist that watches 60 minutes. The idea behind climate change is to get you to think they can control climate. Why? Because if they can control climate, then they can control you.The end result is they want everyone out of cars and trucks and into suburban areas. And onto public transportation and bicycle paths. It may not happen in 10 years, it may not happen in 40. But these are the facts.

Jeff S watches 60 minutes? That explains a lot

@oxi - Thank you for loving food as much as I do - Some of our best dates have been to cool new restaurants or cooking dinner together, and gosh have they been delicious. Our relationship has pretty much been founded on food and I have zero complaints.

Like unicorns, male baton-twirlers have become almost mythical creatures because most people don’t know they exist. They’re hidden until they appear out of the myst like magical things.

People are like, “Men can twirl?” So they’re rare numerically. But they’re also powerful because they’re challenging gender boundaries and doing something that only girls are known for these days — while simultaneously competing against them.

'Americans like to imagine ourselves as rough-hewn, freedom-loving, don't-tread-on-me rebels. But after decades of corruption and conditioning by politicians, judges, bureaucrats, educators, entertainers, media, advertising, pharmaceuticals, processed foods, etc., today’s Americans may well be among the most docile people on earth.

Maybe that’s how America ends: not with a bang but a whimper. Let’s hope we don’t have occasion to find out.'

You guys sure Liberty minded folks will stand up to the tyranny that is unmasking itself?

Maybe Ram will debut their I-6 turbo that will be in the trucks next year.

@papajim--You are losing your marbles. Said nothing about 60 minutes. Your delusional or you have zero reading comprehension. I said that there are enough red states and voters in those red states to keep any real liberal policies from happening. Do I need to explain the 3 branches of Government to you? Passing laws to eliminate trucks is not going to happen. There are not enough younger people that bother to vote but there are lots of the religious right, gun owners, and seniors that will vote. Not a criticism just a fact. Most of the political ads stir the base and get them to vote. The Government is going to take way your guns, the Government is going to force transgender men on you and they will rape your children so don't let them use choose what bathroom they want to use, and the Government is going to take away your jobs. I am not either endorsing or criticizing this political strategy but unless you live under a rock you are bombarded with these messages. I will say you definitely belong to this group papajim.

@oxi--I will agree that we as Americans are not as independent as we think we our.

@Robert Ryan--At some point car and truck sales will slow down. There was a lot of pent up demand for several years of buyers postponing new vehicle purchases. There will be pressure on the Big 2 1/2 when this happens. I believe that is one reason why the domestic auto industry is closing plants and discontinuing slow selling vehicles.

I didn't say anything about 60 minutes. But I have been known watch Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, Shepard Smith, and read the New York Times editorial page.

@papajim--Hurry your girl friend Mary Barra is going to announce another GM product being cut and another one being made in China. The new GM, Guangzhou Motors. See the USA in your Changrolet.

@oxi--I would not focus too much on trucks being legislated out of existence. Not going to happen. Trucks will change but they have been changing over the past decade or so. I would not focus on that.

With extreme liberals taking over and starting to seek the green new deal, trucks will be banned less needed for business, farm or pay a heavy tax to drive a truck by 2030 ish.

I can drive Tesla Ev 1000 miles for about 15 $ worth of electric and it all comes from Sunshine

How much will you DIEzl cost you for the same distance?do tell

When EV trucks come you wont be able to compete..now go and breathe some more coal rolled exhaust

HAHAHAHA

@Jeff s - speaking about losing your marbles, have you ever seen a baton twirler perform? They manipulate a metal stick in magical ways: rolling it between their fingers, tossing it 20 feet into the air, and catching it between their legs or completely blind behind their head. If you have seen a baton twirler, it was likely a young woman in a bedazzled swimsuit-style costume. While it is true that baton twirlers are more often young women and girls, it was not always that way. In fact, much like cheerleading and figure skating, men were the first to twirl, not women.

Its called OVERsuply,,happens every so often, they build too many vehicles too fast and people dont trade old ones in..
Im perfectly happy with my ten year old Silvy so have no reason to buy new one,,
unlike Frodnatics and Rambozos do bc their trucks break down soon the warranty expires..LOL

New revision of the Donnie and Marie Little Bit of Country on the Chevy truck ads. Little bit of Aztec and a little bit of Edsel the new 2019 Silverado. One hot mess.

@Chevrolet builds a better way to see the USA - actually the last thing that the US Automotive industry is less baton twirling! In so many ways, men are privileged — they have better options at school and work, for example. But when you put men in these feminized spaces, some of that goes away. They still get some attention because they’re so unique, but at the same time, this isn’t their world. They’re cast aside in many ways. Men and boys who twirl often don’t get the same awards. Their events aren’t given the same prestige. It’s kind of a weird mix. It’s an interesting case where men may not completely lose their privilege but it’s certainly questioned. They think, I’m surrounded by a group of girls. I’m the center of attention because I’m the only male. But it doesn’t mean it’s my space to dominate.

@papajim--Chris Matthews is on.

The strongest voting group are the religious right and seniors

@Jeff S

So let me see if I understand---The religious right elected the previous president in 2008 and again in 2012.

@papajim--But most of the truck owners think the 2019 Silverado is the ugliest truck on the market. A face that only Mary Barra would love. The only truck where the back of the truck looks better than the front.

I actually really like the 2019 Silverado's exterior. It has nice sharp yet modern lines. Now the interior and rest of the truck is not my cup of tea.

@papajim--Who do you think elected are current President?

Glad someone likes the current Silverado. Truck might be good but a new facia would help. I can't wait to see the real people ad.

I like the exterior of the new Silverado 1500, though there are only one or two versions of the front that I like (Trail Boss LT is one). The interior is, well, lacking. I don't really like the exterior of the new Silverado HD's, I especially dislike the new front end on the LT trim level, while the LTZ front end looks maybe okay to me.

Having said all of that, I don't like the front ends on the Ford F150 or the Super Duties either. I hate the front end on the Tundra, mildly dislike the front end on the Titan, and the Ram front end maybe looks okay at best to me.

To me, the new Silverado 1500 is basically a love it/hate it design on the exterior. On the interior I think it is closer to just hate it.

I can't wait to see the real people ad.

This comment might be a little off topic but I got to see the all new 1999 Silverado months before it was revealed. I just happened to get sent to a training course that was in at GM test facility. The instructor completed the training and then asked the class if we want to be among the first people to see the newly redesigned Silverado. Of course the answer was a resounding yes. So we go for a little walk through this facility, open a door and there is was. It was gray color LS extended cab 4x4. It was sent to this particular facility to have real world evaluation testing done on it. I assume it had the camouflage applied after.

@papajim--Who do you think elected are current President?
Posted by: Jeff s | Jan 12, 2019

The answer has been known for more than a year Jeff. Average middle class voters in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania who had not voted GOP in decades came out for the president. During the last 2 years when he goes on the road you have people standing in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse at the guy.

You are way off target on this.

Will the Rivian be at the show?

@ Chevrolet builds a better way to see the USA,

You are a feminist male...

So reality about the demise of trucks as we know them continues...

WE already have smaller engines that are turbo, aluminum to save weight, packed full of more liberal controlling devices to distract, 10-speed trans, and so forth...

Future? 20-speed trans, EV motors or smaller 2 liter or less engines with CVT's, and some new plastic body and frame molding, lowering of trucks for safety and aero, massive electronics for 1984 controls, taxed to the end, not allowed in urban areas or liberal green cities, and so forth...

Information control is more powerful than any nuclear weapon and guess who controls those major news outlets like Google, facebook, mainstreet media, Amazon, Hollywood, most radio stations and tv stations, newspapers? Liberal minded folks or globalists!

Look at how they infiltrate the auto industry and call for more regulations upon vehicles, more taxation when registering, the new green deal to destroy oil and gas for renewable energy... folks its coming and NO, the religious right does not have the voting block anymore to win elections. WE are seeing this year after year where socialist ideals are fast becoming more popular, which is wrong and immoral!

It will be interesting to see if there are any reveals or teasers related to the upcoming new 2020 f150, 2020 bronco, or the new plugin hybrid f150.

@Beebe--I would like to see the new Bronco as well. Hopefully the Bronco is a real competitor to the Jeep Wrangler instead of the Mexican made Chevy Blazer that is just another front wheel drive crossover. Chevy soiled the reputation of the Blazer name.

@oxi--If it makes you feel better to get it off your chest then go ahead. Trucks are here to stay.

@oxi--I will say one thing Toyota at least is not importing Chinese made vehicles into the US market nor have they ever received a bailout from the US Taxpayers. Toyota is looking better everyday compared to GM. Chinese made Buick Envision and more Chinese made GMs in our future. Thanks but no thanks.
