2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Focuses on Capability: Review

03-chevrolet-silverado-high-country-crew-cab-2019-angle--dynamic--exterior--front--white

Although the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 did not win our most recent half-ton pickup truck comparison test, it does offer a long list of upgrades and new technology in a continuously growing vehicle class. Despite the Silverado 1500's fourth-place finish in a field of five, the Chevy half ton could still be the perfect pickup for you, as we point out in our review on Cars.com.

Related: What's the Best Half-Ton Truck for 2018?

There are lots of big changes to the 2019 Silverado 1500, including a new trim level lineup that numbers eight models and class-leading new powertrain technologies. We're still waiting for the all-new 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder Duramax Chevy has promised for the pickup — we should know more about it this summer.

So if you're in the market for a half-ton truck, check out the review to find out how the new 10-speed automatic transmission behaves, how the new trailering technology works and how the Trail Boss with the 2-inch suspension lift did on punishing terrain.

We just had our first chance to get behind the wheel of a 4x4 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom Trail Boss double cab, which is a new, more "economically" priced off-road trim level (our test truck listed for $45,055 including destination). It was equipped with the optional active fuel management 5.3-liter V-8. We were impressed with how comfortable, quiet and strong the truck felt, delivering 17.2 mpg on our long-haul freeway trek from Southern to Northern California. The truck was pretty light at just more than 5,000 pounds, offering a payload of almost 1,700 pounds. We'll have more to say about this pickup when we compare it with the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (likely costing more than $45,000) in a future head-to-head contest.

Same old Gm lies it didn't even hit the average MPG

Despite the Silverado 1500's fourth-place finish in a field of five

OUCH!!!

Ok, so MSRP, so for $15K, they are dead even at 30 mph.
It's .3 secs faster to 60 and almost dead even at 1/4 mile
Again, WOW, For $15k, I can add a supercharger on it, to put the 6.2l performance in a whole different league. Do you see the logic here.
Also, so many Ford guys bashed GM for only offering 6.2L in higher trims, yet, it's ok for Ford to offer a H.O. in the most expensive truck on the market for a half ton??
I was going off of what I paid for my truck $44k to $75K what the truck was listed for, bc Ford is not known to lower their top tier trucks like a SLT or LTZ GM truck gets its discounts.
So the difference in price will be well above $20k+ if not closer to the $30k I mentioned

more lies from the hypocrit

"Despite the Silverado 1500's fourth-place finish in a field of five, the Chevy half ton could still be the perfect pickup for you.."

is where I stopped reading.

@ Yard Sale

Focus, Change

Stay on topic

I already told you above comment is true.

Why you gotta be angry all the time?

So for a truck with a 2 inch lift, big tires, off road capabilities, it achieved 17.2mg's.

That's not horrible but also not great.

Interesting to see what a regular 5.3l with 8 spd would get.

My old 17 got good gas mileage. It had 3.42 rear, and 8 spd with Z71 package

Yard sale---did you see which truck was number ONE, it was the GMC Sierra, not your beloved nissan titan.

at least nobody's whining about square wheel wells anymore

The Silverado has the best looking exterior in the segment.

TOO BAD FORD HAS BEEN CAUGHT FALSIFYING THEIR FUEL ECONOMY FIGURES, I can't wait to see results of the investigation. No wonder why people are getting 4-5 mpg less with their ego-boost engines than what the sticker says.

@matt

"Despite the Silverado 1500's fourth-place finish in a field of five, the Chevy half ton could still be the perfect pickup for you.."

matt- you should be looking at the GMC Sierra then, as it tested out as #1 in that test.

Basically this says go look at the Ford and Ram.

Basically this says go look at the Ford and Ram.

@ Tom

Really?

"Although the new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is not getting as much praise because it doesn't measure up to the plush sizzle and pop of the new 2019 Ram 1500's luxurious interior, it's a huge improvement over the Silverado it replaces, with almost infinite variations to fit your needs. If you know that you want style and luxury from your half ton, the LTZ and High Country have plenty of tech and chrome. If you need some solid function and sportiness for your rig, there are the LT, RST and LT Trail Boss. And if you need function over form, consider the economical Work Truck, Custom and Custom Trail Boss."

I don't see that anywhere

Go sit in the interior. Very nice and simple!

@tom

No, basically it says to look at the GMC Sierra, as it tested out as numero uno, that means number one for those of you in Rio Linda.

flea market=papajim

Here is the verdict...
Versus the competition: If you want the widest powertrain choices or you need your pickup to be safe and secure when towing and hauling, this is your truck. However, if you want (all that plus) state-of-the-art interior quality, luxury material choices and layout, you might have to look closer at Ford and Ram.

So yeah skip the Chevy and GovMC and go to your Ford and Ram dealers now

@ Tom

Why so the truck can get recalled every week.

At least I'd be getting free coffee and doughnuts

You must like that

@tom---You are from Rio Linda then?

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a26448787/2019-ford-ranger-4x4-truck-by-the-numbers/

Ranger got 16 mpgs and gets not so good review

EPA FUEL ECONOMY
Combined/city/highway: 22/20/24 mpg

it supposed to get class leading....LMFAO!!!! Ford lies again

This states buy a Colorado!!

TOO BAD FORD WAS CAUGHT FALSIFYING THEIR TRUCK FUEL ECONOMY RATINGS, I can't wait to see the results of the investigation!!

No wonder why people have been averaging 4-5 mpg less with their ego-boost engines than what the sticker says! I can smell a massive class-action lawsuit for this one!

At Ford, quality is job one!!

Good news for Ford owners, you should be getting a nice fat check from Ford as a result of the upcoming class-action lawsuit for FALSIFYING FUEL ECONOMY NUMBERS. Too bad, Ford will be required to post real mpg fuel economy numbers on their stickers, 12 mpg city, 15 mpg hwy for their ego-boost engines! Ha ha!

Sorry you have to keep defending that Chevy turd.

@papa flea, You have been outed.

Rush will be on in 1 he 20 minutes. I know it's a good show and you're getting antsy. But don't take it out on me

Uh-oh, gosh, I sure hope Ford doesn't go BANKRUPT after they finish paying off everyone for FALSIFYING FUEL ECONOMY NUMBERS ON THEIR TRUCKS. Maybe their new partner, Volkswagen can bail Ford out, after they finish paying off the $35 billion they owe for their Diesel engine emissions fiasco.

Or you could get a BT-50...

Very popular truck in the minds of some people. In their minds I said.

In fact since its release (in 2014?), the BT50 made in Thailand has sold fewer than 50k trucks worldwide. Setting the world on fire.

Come on tnt you sound just like this here article that appears to be a result of advertisement dollars. (Nothing new only trying to take back prior Silverado review bad talk).

Tell me what domestic brand competing with the silverado does not offer an infinite amount of truck variations to fit anyone's needs??

I think the Mazda BT-50 is Big Al's favorite truck that he always talks about? Designed in Australia, yup, they need to import that the US, it would dominate the market here! Now that we know Ford has been CHEATING ON TRUCK FUEL ECONOMY RATINGS, it would probably surpass even the mighty Ford in sales!

even the dismal sales totals of the Honda out-rate the BT50

I miss yard sale, he must have got his text on his Obama-phone that his welfare check was ready to be picked up. I am missing his profundity in this discussion.

@ fullsize

That was a quote from the article.

Not me.

GM is offering more variations than ever before. That's a fact. I really like what they are doing with their trucks

I don't like what they are doing as a large corporation by laying off all kinds of people the past few weeks.

I buy GM bc they LAST and are reliable and don't have to go on TV and spread LIES about class leading nonsense!

@ flea market

I actually told him to go look at trucks today, and he can see that my statement, I said on the other thread was the truth.

Whether or not he gets out of his parents basement, gets a few dollars for gas money from mommy and daddy and does it??

We shall see..

Plus, he was very angry this morning bc he couldn't handle the truth.....

I don't like what they are doing as a large corporation by laying off all kinds of people the past few weeks

@tntgmc

Since you seem to believe in this stuff, why don't you hire a bunch of people you cannot afford to support and keep paying them until you're broke? Mary Barra's critics want her to lead a world class automaker but they also seem to want a firm that plays the part of mommy-daddy for its shareholders, customers and employees.

no surprise here, Chevy is a mixed bag, mpg getting worse, 4 cylinders being rammed down our throats, worst interior, goodbye....

Good point TNTGMC, Yard sale did not seem to be his usual jovial and insightful self this morning. He will feel better after he cashes his welfare check at the local Payday Loan location, then he can go across the street to purchase some Old Thunderbird to help wash down the last of his fritos w/cheese-wiz that his parent's passed down to the basement last week.

but but but your last Gay Man's Chariot had a vibration GM couldn't fix

@turbo---I would take the vibration over Ford trucks catching on fire, unintended shifts from 6th gear to 1st gear, and of course the "Ford Death Wobble".

@ Turbo

GM replaced it with a brand new one.

What's not to love

Ford has said to their customers.."OH that's just normal, live with it!"

I'll stay with GM

Thanks though

Have a great day Turbo!

GM replaced it with a brand new one.

Posted by: TNTGMC | Feb 22, 2019 10:55:33 AM

yep and let me guess it didn't cost you a thing they just replaced it for free, how many day was it (the old truck) at the stealership trying to fix the vibration?

That is one ugly frontend on that truck! What's the matter with GM designers? Do they just pull dopers off the street and tell them to design a frontend? Ugly!

@ Drools

$1500 it cost me.

I did get upgraded from a 6 spd to an 8 spd, plus heated and cooled seats along with the Z71 package.

So, well worth it

It was in shop for over 2 months. Had tech guy from Texas up working on it,

And they never once said you have to live with this, unlike many Ford technicians have said.

Heck someone posted on here a Super Duty customer with death wobble and FORD told him truck isn't designed to drive over 55 mph??????

It's on youtube also!

That's the company you buy from......so sad

@ Dale

Looks are subjective

Good thing GM is able to successfully sells 2 brands, so the GMC Sierra is available for you, if you don't like the Chevy.

@Dale---unlike the very good looking Ford F150 front end, that looks like it was copied from the Silverado.

Even putc experienced the Ford Death Wobble in the last HD truck comparison, go look it up, but I guess there is no need to worry much about that as long as you keep it under 55 mph. Ford says it is "normal".

@ papajim

No, I would move plants that are in Mexico up into the United States, so hard working AMERICANS can have jobs!!

I'm a GM truck guy, not GM corporation or any corporation. They are greedy and don't care about the general public.

here is what's sad your truck sat for 2 months at a stealership and not only couldn't they fix it you turned around and rewarded GM by buying another one yeah that's sad, i driven Ford's going on 20 years 7.3, 6.0, 6.4, 5.4, v-10, 6.7, 6.2, 3.5, i haven't ever had one sit for a week at a stealership, if that would've happened to me i will guarantee you this i wouldn't be driving a Ford

@ Turbo

I should call u a liar, bc that's what Frank does and the other multiple names u go under but i wont

The only motor i believe u in his the 7.3L and the new 6.7Lowerstoke

The rest especially the 6.0L and 6.4L were JUNK!!!

The 5.4L had issues galore along with the new 3.5L ecoboost

And you would leave Ford bc they wouldn't have treated u like GM to me.

i'm not a liar, and i did change my name from Ford Rules GM Drools to Turbo

Interesting. At least your honest about that

Why the change in names?

And if u owned those motors, u should play lotto bc your one lucky son of a b!tch to have no issues with a 6.0L, 6.4L, 5.4L, or an EcoBoost

Are u a leprechaun? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

@tntonline the liar. If you were a truthful person you would have let other members of a truck forum know what you were going thru with your truck while it was happening.

i didn't say i never had problems ALL brands have issues,
i just never had one at a stealership for over a couple of days, it's not the luck of the draw
i get so annoyed when people say that, it all has to do with how you care for your truck
i changed my name because i wanted something different
