Tailgate Wars: GMC Fires First Round and Ram Calls Foul

IMG_3913 copy II

GMC is feeling quite proud of itself lately since it has one of most versatile and technologically advanced tailgates in the world of pickup trucks (check out its latest commercial called "Anthem"). And GMC is not shy about saying so.

Take, for example, the funny bit of advertising warfare that took place just before Sunday's Super Bowl. GMC took out a full page ad in USA Today touting the fact it had won the tailgate war and declaring itself — not Ram — the winner of the war. Ram took to Twitter with a "not so fast" response in the form of a video showing an NFL official calling a flag on the play with text implying that Ram will reveal some tailgate news at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

Of course, now the Super Bowl is behind us, it looks like GMC was correct since the Los Angeles Rams couldn't even score a touchdown during the big game. But pickup truck tailgates are quite different. Sure, GMC's MultiPro Tailgate can drop in ways others cannot and even provide a nice step into the cargo bed, but we've been hearing rumbling from Ram about an improved tailgate for quite a while, and we've seen proof of tailgate changes in the form of patents and spy photos.

We'll know more by Thursday, when the Chicago Auto Show opens to the media and Ram has its press conference — right after Ford debuts its refreshed 2020 Super Duty with a conventionally boring tailgate. We expect to see a tailgate that opens barn-door style and maybe sports a Honda Ridgeline-esque dual hinge, which could certainly increase Ram's tailgate functionality. We hope Ram doesn't forget about offering a bed access feature as well.

It seems plausible. We'll have more from the Chicago Auto Show in the days to come.

this makes a nice media buzz but the public won't care.

Fiat Chrysler recalling 882,000 pickup trucks in two call backs
Reuters
ReutersFebruary 5, 2019, 11:08 AM PST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said on Tuesday it will recall 882,000 pickup trucks worldwide in two new recalls to address steering and pedal issues.
Don’t buy ETHER ONE STICK WITH FORD!!!
The Italian-American automaker said it is recalling about 660,000 heavy duty Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks from the 2013 through 2017 model years, including 574,000 in the United States because of the potential for drivers to experience steering loss. It said it has reports of one injury and eight accidents that may be related to the issue. The company is also recalling 222,000 2019 Ram 1500 pickup trucks worldwide to better secure brake pedals while the vehicles’ adjustable-pedal feature is in use.

I really like the new GMC tailgates. Allows me to suck a man off while on my knees instead of sitting indian style with my feather hat on. It's just easier on the back.

How do I know, no one will care about this controversy? Glad you asked. It's because I'm a know-it-all moron. That's how I know.

Long term update...
After repeated long term use, GM's multipro tailgate has become loose and now rattles constantly over uneven roads. A great idea but needs some stronger reinforcements or some kind of dampener.

That tailgate from RAM will be recalled within the week

Can you post a link to the actual long term test results. Thanks.

Lol Ram will show off the new fancy tailgate after Ford debuts it's new Super Duty with boring tailgate...I'd much rather have the Super Duty with boring tailgate and a 10-speed Diesel anyday!! The new Ram has 1000 ft. Lbs of torque, won't matter much going against Ford and Chevy with 10-speed Diesels.

This tailgate ladder of Ford's never gets used. It is there for demonstration purposes only. Frankly, no pun intended, it just adds weight. GM's corner steps are much more useful and convenient, and allows for a weight reduction. Brilliant!

Ford's half@$$ design of the tailgate step is a huge fail. U can't use it when towing. GMs corner steps in bumper is way better. Ingenious design. Along now with new one on bedside is a plus!

And if not towing. The multipro tailgate has 6 different functions and a sound system. While the Furd has 1. GM wins again. Just like every comparison here on PUTC

Ford invents, the others copy and follow suit on their Brilliant engineering and design techniques!

That's why Ford's new engine is pushrod. GM has been using it for years...Ford abandoned it for DOHC nonsense......

Keep stretching and coming up with excuses. Move along hobbit

@tntgmc
you are full of hate
stop taking it out on everyone
we don't need to know anything more about you
until you stop the hate

Yard sale, please stop hating yourself first

With a name like that, u sound like you want to throw away your life or get rid of it real cheap

Another stupid GM Shill

The 6.7L Scorpion is push rod. And you like to talk about all the crate engines GM could use in their trucks - you’re the idiot that yapped about an LS7 powered truck...

Well Ford makes plenty of push rod crate engines still.

fake papa

I gotta say it's kinda funny how things come around. Remember the commercials bashing the man step???

Now the gm guys that bashed ford are thumping their chests over the bumper steps and that new tailgate contraption. Too funny

Just don't forget to leave that drawbar in....that contraption looks awful expensive!

so which sounds manlier

Let's jump in my Ram and tackle that hill

Let's jump in my Sierra and tackle that hill

You do know that Ford built Ford MODS S/DOHC and Ford V8 Pushrods and the very same time period in the 90s.

You now say Ford is copying GM with building pushrods.

You're ignorant bro.

In addition, The Ford 351W was always better then the GM 350.

@ Frank

I'm not your bro!
Second, I never said Ford didn't build push-rods.
I said they abandoned them for DOHC in 1997, while GM is still running them. know the difference.
Now they are going back to them with the new 7.3L
And no, a 351W is not better than a 350. They are both so similar that I would call it a draw!

But your to arrogant and foolish to know any better

Know leave!!! Like you said you were going to

Know leave!!!

Huh?

All day b!tch

@tntgmc
full of hate again today
too bad

Whats all day?

Why you always so angry

Maybe you and Yard sale, could actually have a yard sale and sell some of that Ford junk you have lying around? Earn a little bit of money to put your Ford truck back onto the road

Good luck fella

I like how in the picture of the ram tailgate how there not even lined up. Body lines and tailgate cap are not level across both halves of the new ram tailgate. LOL

At the end of the day GM’s tailgate won’t work properly at all due to the fact you would have to remove the hitch and or the trailer every time you want to use it lol

Funny how the GM guys crow over their new tailgate and, at the same time, say the "public won't care" about Ram's new tailgate which we all now know ups the ante, putting GM once again back in the pack. Sorry, GM, Ram is eating Silverado's lunch by outselling Silverado in the 3rd quarter of 2018, and again in the 4th quarter of 2018, and again in January, 2019..... Swallow that bitter pill, GM fans.
