By Patrick Masterson
Vehicles Affected: Approximately 9,500 model-year 2016-17 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin
The Problem: The aluminum bolts that attach the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing may corrode and fracture. This could cause a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist and require greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the aluminum bolts with steel bolts for free.
What Owners Should Do: Mercedes-Benz manufacturer Daimler Vans will begin notifying owners May 27. Owners can call the automaker at 800-367-6372, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
