Joining the Ford Ranger’s off-road packages for the 2021 model year is the new top-spec Tremor Off-Road Package, giving buyers a more capable off-roader straight from the dealership. Think of it as the Super Duty Tremor that was announced in 2019, but smaller.

The Ranger Tremor slots above the FX2 off-road package for two-wheel-drive fun and the FX4 for four-wheel drive fun, which now means there are three levels off-road equipment packages in addition to a catalog of more than 200 factory accessories. Even though Ford still hasn’t given us the Ranger Raptor — which we’re obligated to mention every time Ford offers something new for the Ranger — the Blue Oval seems all in on letting Ranger owners head off-road with confidence.

Equipment Upgrades

The Tremor starts by giving the Ranger a 20-millimeter lift, front and rear, and adding redesigned front steering knuckles so the 32-inch Continental General Grabber all-terrain tires can be fitted to a new set of 17-inch Magnetic gray wheels. The suspension gets Fox 2.0 monotube shocks with remote rear reservoirs and hydraulic rebound stops. According to Ford, these are tuned differently than what you’d get with the Performance Level 1 Package.

The front coil-over springs and rear leaf springs get new tuning, as well, for improved off-road performance and increased wheel travel. Ford also reduced the stiffness of the anti-roll bar to keep things more comfortable over the bumpy stuff.

All this nets you a 1-inch wider Ranger with 9.7 inches of ground clearance, eight-tenths of an inch more than a standard SuperCrew 4x4. Ford claims the Tremor’s approach angle is 2.2 degrees higher than a standard Ranger, up to 30.9 degrees, while the departure angle improves 0.1 degree to 25.5 and the breakover angle increases 2.7 degrees to 24.2 degrees. Suspension travel also improves to 6.5 inches in front and 8.1 inches in back.

The package also adds a frame-mounted steel bash plate and underbody skid plates for added protection, hoop-style side steps, a locking rear differential, the four-mode Terrain Management System, Trail Control and a recalibrated traction control system “for improved acceleration and traction in gravel, so customers can punch it in a washout with gusto,” according to Ford.

Appearance Upgrades

The 1-inch-wider stance and bigger tires give the Ranger a decidedly more aggressive appearance, as does the restyled grille painted Magnetic gray and with black horizontal bars and red “nostril” accents. Tremor graphics appear on both sides of the cargo area, and buyers can also add an optional graphics package to further enhance the look.

Inside, the Tremor gets unique seats with suede inserts and stitched “Tremor” badging. Additional interior accent pieces are blacked out, and Ford added a set of six auxiliary switches — three rated for 5-amp loads, plus 25-amp, 15-amp and 10-amp switches — for controlling a variety of accessories.

What Doesn’t Change

The Tremor package does not update the engine or transmission of the Ranger, meaning buyers will still get the plenty powerful turbo 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and its 270 horsepower and 310 pounds-feet of torque paired to Ford’s 10-speed automatic.

Payload is a bit lower than a standard Ranger, down to 1,430 pounds from the Supercrew 4x4’s 1,560, but towing capacity can still max out at 7,500 pounds.

Pricing and Release Date

Ford’s priced the Tremor at $4,290, and it’s available on the XLT and Lariat trims. Production is expected to begin in early 2021.
